I wish I could learn Malachi 3 , how it connects with Jesus Christ , Levitical priests , the messenger of the LORD preceding the coming of Elijah and finally the day of the LORD . Thanks for illuminating us by this series of use of old testament to understand the New testament .👍❤️❤️
This is a difficult text primarily because the referents are not clearly defined. For instance, is there one messenger or are there two? Is the Lord the same as messenger #1 or #2 (if there are two messengers). Here is the way I interpret the words. The messenger who prepares the way is John the Baptist. This, of course, aligns with Isaiah 40 and the NT. The Lord who comes suddenly to his temple is the Messiah. This Lord is also called “the messenger of the covenant” in the words that follow. What will he do? The Messiah will refine the priesthood. Indeed, his refining will be such that all those purified in him will become priests of the new covenant, who offer acceptable sacrifices because they are part of the Priest, Jesus the Messiah. Regarding Elijah: the “Elijah” of Malachi 4 is John the Baptist, who comes before the day of the Messiah. We are not still waiting on Elijah. I know this is brief, but a full commentary would be too lengthy for UA-cam. I hope it provides some clarity.
Thank you so much. That passage from Zechariah really shed a lot of light on this! I don't know if or how often you check back on comments, but do you have any thoughts about Jesus' making a whip of cords? I believe only John included this. And while screen and stage productions have him going after the people, it reads more like he specifically used it to drive out the sheep and cattle.
there is no word for 'cleanse' in the text of either of the accounts in the gospels where he stops the commerce in the temple courts therefore it is an error or an eisegesis to say he cleansed the temple (the word only occurs in the non-inspired added heading for the passage) ....while in the flesh he is only recorded as cleansing lepers and nothing else nor was he yet a high priest to cleanse the temple as required in the torah nor was it during yom kippur when the cleansing is done - but after his ascension he has purified and continues to purify his followers (1 John 1:9) ....as our high priest he also has cleansed things in the heavens to allow us future access to the father (Heb 5:1, 8:2-3, 9:23)
