The History of the "Cute Girl that Dances" Entry & Why Eurovision Hates Them

  • Eurovision Song Contest, despite its name, has, for the past 20 or so years, been more than just, well, a song contest. A trend and a style of performance that has been criminally underrated at Eurovision while arguably being the most fun, the most memorable and the hardest to do is the “cute girl that dances” entry. I am talking about the entries where the performer, most often, and almost exclusively a woman, will bust her ass on stage dancing throughout the majority of the performance, executing a well-choreographed performance, having barely any rest time to catch her breath yet still sounding good, while also looking amazing.

01:27 - Cute Girlie that Dances Entry
    02:47 - Eurovision Was Not Dance-Friendly
03:43 - The Original Trinity: Sertab, Ruslana, Helena
06:15 - The Robbed Goddesses: Ani, Kalomira, Sirusho
    08:24 - Honourable Mentions (2009)
    09:00 - The Dry Period (2010-2017)
10:22 - The Revival of the Trend: Eleni, Tamta, Elena
12:38 - The Announcement of the Climax: Sanja, Ksenija, Ivana
13:25 - The Final Form: Chanel
15:10 - Where to from here? (Outro)

Marie N from 2002 does not get enough credit for how much she changed Eurovision.

Cute Girls That Dance will generally do better in the semi-finals than the final, becausd the semis are more likely to be watched by Eurovision fans, who are in turn more likely to appreciate girly dancey songs than the general public, who may only watch the grand final.

Why you forget Latvia 2002 winner? She is the first dancing girl entry who won. Because she is only one who brings a big celebration with energy and performance. Competing with Ira Losko entry from Malta, it’s obvious why Marie N won this year. Sad that this entry is really underrated.

She was also the one who kinda started doing a full on story performances and reveals which also started happening in following years. People don't give credit to 2002's winner because the song is... well its basic, but she did change the game

@@benjamintic3653 I love this song because of high happy sunny Latina mood. And I love the chorus. Maybe is basic but also energetic and positive

I think Marie N falls totally into the "cute girl that dances" category, but she definitely marks one of the biggest shifts in Eurovision as an entertainment show. Because of her, having a memorable and flashy performance matters just as much as the song, if not more.

In 2012 we had Cyprus and Greece who gave us a "cute girl who dances though". And maybe we could count Belarus 2013
And as for 2023, Israel is definetly in the "cute girl who sings" chategory and since she's preety astablished artist I think she's gonna get a good result (probably won'tbe as good as Chanel but its gonna be good), same with UK's Mae. I will ignore Poland...

2021 was a really tough year though to be fair. Everybody had 2 years to elevate themselves, reconsider their entries and do better, also everyone was trying to get out of the pandemic funk, taking risks and putting out bangers. Hurricane 2021 was leaps and bounds better than 2020, but so was everyone else

Honestly, I can say “cute girls dancing” genre is overrepresented in ESC. They’re losing to American industry girls, at the same time they are lacking originality and authenticity. I would prefer more diversity like blues, jazz or alternative music. 1-2 girl bop for a year will be enough.

Elena Tsagrinou had great vocals. Hurricane relied a lot on backing vocals. Just a case of bias.

First 40 years would be until 1996. Didn't they start using televoting right after that? Maybe that's the reason. In those 40 years, only juries voted and that's why the winners all seem similar.

hmmmmmmmm 2019 Belarus? Also, 2021 was loaded with cute girls dancing (And I don't think that most people seperated a Cyprus from, say, an Israel that year) So the votes were obviously to be split. And 2022 had Israel too if mentioning Romania (though I personally hated it).
Also, Noa Kirel is kinda THE cute girl who dances in Israel, so I'm very much looking forward to that.

And yes, Sergey Lazarev is cute guy who dance. But mr Kirkorov is so obsessed with Helena Paparizou (that’s why he cover her 2 solo song and 2 Antique songs, and that’s almost all his female singers expect girl from Doredos wear silver dress as Helena wears) that’s he trying replay this entry. But My Number One aged badly as song so Lazarev’s felt as old as Swedish shlagers songs which we’re already become unpopular in Sweden. But cute face and energy of perfect boy makes its bad thing and rises this song to Top 3. But Jamala’s 1944 was more emotional, more original, more vocal and were the one cohesive entry while Lazarev’s entry were just mush up of all Kirkorovs Dream Team entries which didn’t bring one story, just spectacle for the sake of spectacle.
So yeah, nowadays Eurovision is like Olympics of music so that’s why even little mistake can stop you from your victory road. Because every Eurovision winner is exceptional and there is only one winner as Eurovision winner, we don’t have two similar Eurovision winners nowadays, even Sertab/Ruslana/Helena are different to each other. Even in XX century Eurovision winners songs really stood out of other competitors.

So many of these singers like Chanel got robbed I think Israel will get robbed too like they needed to win, people hate actual talent, they like other songs like Finland or Ukraine they were good but not as great as Israel, people hate talent because they don't have one.

First of all, young people LISTENED to songs in the 1980s and 1990s and EVEN Waterloo is a favourite among SOME modern day Eurovision candidates. Secondly, 2005 had a PLETHORA of potential winners, including Wig Wam, who SHOULD have won and thirdly, Russia were RIGHT to win in 2008 - the guy had good singing. Ukraine had a good song and Annie really DIDNT perform OR sing bad - you try singing it! Dima Bilan did something special with his song, not only with the staging, but at the end he DIRECTLY ADDRESSED the audience by pointing towards us and saying it was up to us to vote for him. A performance isn't 'boring' if the singer is just standing there. 2010 is one of the STRONGEST years despite what you've said simply because the songs are strong. If a song is strong and has good instrumentation and decent vocals, it's good to me, and 2010 HAD NO SHORTAGE of that! 2010 also had 'Apricot Stone' remember! Loreen was NOT a 'cute girl' winning. You could that with Ivi but not with her. I would also argue that Slo-Mo has the WORST lyrics of all time! And you're wrong about 2023. Israel, UK AND Poland are ALL sending similar songs this year!

"people won't let this song win because isms" this video didn't age well with Loreen winning, a dancing guy taking second place and the 3rd place also being a girl whos dance sequence was pretty much the most talked about element of her performance. oh and there is Norway coming in 3rd on televote and 5th in general. the 2022 Spain entry was dull as hell musically. so sorry if you find people judgeing the actual music in a music competiton disappointing.
