  • Wilfred Owen, in his poem 'Greater Love', written due to the sufferings he witnessed and experienced through World War I, explores the biblical concept that 'Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends', (John 15:13).
Owen soon came to protest the war and felt that young men were being led to their deaths for no good reason, sacrificed on the alter of national power and interest. Whilst Rupert Brooke's poem 'The Soldier' was being used as propaganda in defence of the war (perhaps an oxymoron in itself), Owen, after meeting Doctor A.J Brock and Siegfried Sassoon, wrote some of the most powerful anti-war poetry ever created.
His poem 'Greater Love' both explored and mocked the idea expressed in John 15:13, (pushed by the Government to rally up support in favour of war), moving from romantic thesis: 'Red Lips Are Not So Red' to their brutal antithesis: 'As The Stained Stones Kissed By The English Dead', as a means of ridicule and derision at such fatuous ideas.
Owen died just a week before the end of World War One. His legacy lives on.
This is one for Armistice Day and Remembrance Day. But should be one for every day.

My sentiments exactly. No but in all seriousness (as they say), firstly Thank You Hugo. That's very kind of you. But I'll get there. I need to upload more systematically and a streak of luck is needed too of course. But thank you. Thank You. That makes me smile...

Loved you channel. Maybe you are still struggling as a UA-camr. But you'll do great soon. Some suggestions: if you could begin the video with some starting objectives and a proper intro, it will help viewers. Chapterisation is also a considerable step
