In most decks the cards used for playing only have hiragana, but the matching cards that are read have the kanji with furigana on them. Cards with kanji on them for play are rare and not normally used.
well a lot of anime fans will probably get interested with the release of the anime chihayafuru whose base story revolves around the card game karuta. I believe that the game will spread.
Wow... I'll have to work quite a bit on my Hiragana reading skills if I ever want to be any good at this. Chihayafuru though - can't wait for the next season!

that Lincon guy is really cute! I wish I could find Karuta cards. The closest I've found is Hafuda. This game is really cool. hard but fun looking.

Bad news for you guys haha xD Karuta cards has Kanji too not only hiragana. But anyway I prefer to learn the entire language it's awesome.
