I remember when i was a kid back in the 1980's when car manufacturers used to praise that their vehicles were easy to service yourself and if you did, they would last. I personally own (2) vehicles from the 1990's and i will not part with them. One is Japanese and the other is American. Everyone makes fun of me and tells me to get a new vehicles yet i'm the one with ZERO car payments and zero debt. I don't care what people think about me anymore. I'm not giving all of my money to constant have a new car that's breaking down.
Once again you nailed it Tom. We have some 20 and 30 year old pickups on our farm that we use as "field runners" during the growing season. They run all summer long doing the work that a truck was made for. The sad part is, if we don't keep them running and rebuilding them , there is nothing new today that will ever replace them..
In 2017, I bought a brand new Chrysler 300S sedan. With interest, it came to $42,000. Put $6,000 down but monthly payments were still $600. Great car, super sharp and had no problems with it, but was tired of making those big payments every month. Halfway thru the 6 year loan, I sold it for what I still owed and bought a 2004 F-150 FX4 with 148,000 miles on it. Cherry condition. Paid $6,000 cash and have been thrilled with that decision. My work truck is a 2005 F-250 SD that I bought in 2006 used. Still going strong today at 270,000 miles. It's been paid off since 2012.
I remember when a roll up window lasted as long as you had the vehicle and was worry free. I remember cars had metal bumpers on the front and back. No front end clip entirely was needed, just take a hammer and bang the bumper out or a replacement.
Now - just imagine YOU are the guy who starts a car company, an appliance company, etc.that makes a highly reliable product by doing things “the right way” by putting the customer’s best interests first. Guess what - you’d quickly put all of your competition out of business! Wouldn’t that be a more desirable business model?!? Race to the top rather than a race to the bottom.
@ from what but sounds like they’ve had reliability issues as well. My parents had an Avalon and it had quite a few issues. They had to replace the engine at right around 100k miles.
I bought a brand new 2023 Chevy Malibu RS last year and the car has been great. 24,000 miles on it with zero problems. A coworker of mine has a 2020 Malibu and he said he has had no problems with his either.
I own a 2006 Jeep Liberty Renegade 3.7l V6 and 6 spd manual. 18 years later with 106K miles and it runs perfect with zero issues. I can't find anything to replace it even though I want a NEW vehicle. I am going to be like all the Cubans and just keep fixing my jeep till I die.

We are supposed to be heading for a more sustainable future. Making cars like shit that don’t last is very irresponsible of car companies. They should be held accountable.
Seems kinda opposite of sustainability doesn't it? From Cars to Coca-Cola, all these manufacturing company's like to publish how sustainable they operate.
This helped me make up my mind to keep my 2 extra vehicles I was going to sell. Would be easier to keep paying insurance than to find a replacement vehicle if I needed too.

I wouldn't bet on these little 1.2 and 1.3 3 cylinder engines lasting a long time. As far as cvt's yes they have had a lot of problems with the Nissan Jatco transmissions and others, but Subaru, Honda, and Toyota cvt's have been proven to last. For the most part newer cars last a lot longer than they used to. You used to be lucky to get 100k miles out of a car. I think there was more planned obsolescence in the 60's and 70's when the automakers changed the look of the models every year.
I agree and disagree true manufacturers don't want a car to last for ever because of money but it's also on the consumer people want a truck that gets a million miles to the gallon while having 4 second zero to 60 times and handle like a sports car while being able to go off road and ride like a Cadillac which requires a bunch of extra stuff to be able to do all those things. I work as a dealership mechanic and yes turbos fail but it's not the turbos that are the real failure point it's all the oil and coolant lines that go to the turbo they start leaking and people dont check their fluids so they burn of other stuff do to lack of oil or coolant
That’s not exactly a true statement. Unions have been doing the work for DECADES. They’ve only had to start turning the screws when the car companies started becoming absolute lunatics. Unions are not as evil as one would have you believe.

I DESPISE auto start/stop. It’s the most annoying feature ever put in a car. My 2023 Canyon has it and I would like to permanently disable it.
When one of my batteries died on my 20 wrangler i replaced it and subsequently auto start/stop stopped working. It is great except for error message
My manual trans car doesn't have it! Thats how to beat it

Can't you turn it off?
Did a afm dod delete on my 07 Tahoe at about 150,000 miles. Still going strong today with over 307,000 miles!!
The stop start stops the oil pump too. Good way to shorten engine life and starter life.

Debt machines. They don't want you to have a vehicle for the next 25 years, they want you to buy a new one every 8 years.
