My Dad is one of these guys in the video. He's 82 years old. There's about 40 of them in touch, around 10 or less meet every year in L.A. for a breakfast reunion and a photo.
Saw this video on the Rotator commemorating their 66th class reunion. Thank you so much for this video, shared. Back when the LAPD was politically incorrect, and hired policemen, not officers.
I knew someone who was a retired LAPD officer from 1967-'94.I met him during the late '90s.I remember back in 2000,he showed me a black&white photo of his graduating class(looks like 24 of them)that looks like these officers of that time period having the belt strap that goes across from upper right shoulder down across to left hip.He told me he was involved in "Black Panther and domestic terrorist group S.L.A." shootouts during the late 1960s-'70s.He was on tactical alert during the L.A. riots of 1992 and one of the LAPD police cars chasing O.J.Simpson in 1994.Retired LAPD officer J.Petersen,it's been 14 years since I last saw you in person.
This is awesome. I notice similarities between training today and training back then. That said, I think the LAPD looked far more polished back then. It could be the old eight-point hats or the shoulder straps attached to their Sam Brownes, or maybe even the fact that this is the Parker era. I think the department should bring both back, not for normal duty wear, but for occasions that call for dress uniforms.
Edward Chavez If you think about it,back in those old days. Not even a quarter percent were minorities,"African-Americans,hispanics,Asians or even white female" recruits.More than half percent of Caucasian/white American males under 40 years old who became cops back in those old days were narrow or negative minded(sorry this is late).
Hey - its not that different - "what is old is new again and what is new is old again". Some things never change. Well maybe the hats, suicide straps and one armed shooting - and the cross draw :)
Say what you want about politics, racism, society etcétera back then. Nonetheless, Los Angeles was a better and more beautiful place tolive back then. Cleaner, safer, more orderly, law abiding and just a better place to live and work and most of all, raise a family in. If you poll long-time L.A. residents regardless of background, the vast majority will agree with me.
