    Words can't express how happy I am that this country is FINALLY investing in passenger railways. While this bridge should have been replaced YEARS ago, I'm so excited that construction has moved as far as it has. Looking forward to the finished product.

    Giving this a plus because I think we all undervalue gov projects. These programs built our interstates, dug tunnels through mountains, and defined how to do these sorts of thing safely for generations. There is a reason you can drive in the US and not be afraid of rockfall or a tunnel collapsing. It’s called trust and I for one trust! God bless USA

    As a UK resident who has used the NE corridor, its great to see this kind of investment with an Amtrack video publicising its construction.
    In the UK, our Network Rail, who look after the UK rail infrastructure, have been publicising their upgrade projects to good effect for some time now,
    showing passengers and general public how money is being spent to improve the travelling experience, It really helps public understanding.
    Amtrack please keep up the good work, the NE corridor is something to be proud of, these projects show that you are following up on the
    excellent pioneering work of past generations, to upgrade this vital transport link for future.

      Well... Amtrak California is not Federal Amtrak. It's a joint venture between Caltrans and Amtrak. It gets about 5x more money than Amtrak does. They have better trains, cleaner trains, better paid and friendlier staff, better frequencies, basically everything better by 10-70%. We call it Amtrak Premium (TM) locally. Federal Amtrak does not really measure up outside of the NEC and a few lines in the Chicago area.

    • @TohaBgood2
      @TohaBgood2 11 місяців тому +1

      @@m--a Yes, it is and it's also better than average Amtrak. But not nearly to the same extent. They still have that rust belt decay "smell about them". Some things that are obviously broken are left unfixed and just sort of accepted. Amtrak California started a lot lower and had to convince people to give their car and _choose_ the train. This required the trains to made a lot nicer to use. Amtrak Midwest didn't do that to the same extent, unfortunately. And it didn't have the rather massive rail funding that California passed in ballot measures from the 90s on.
      But they still do a great job with what they have. And they are really trying with the new Brightline-style Siemens trains. Hopefully the people in the Midwest wake up and throw some more money at them! There's insane potential there for a highER speed rail network around Chicago!

    Was stationed @ Ft. Monmouth early 90's and took the NJ Transit maybe 10 times. It was no fun riding across that bridge. I wonder if there will be separate tracks for NJT and Amtrak and hopefully no freight trains get to use it! Too bad tRump and especially Christie nixed funding for the new badly needed tunnels under the Hudson. Like I said in another post it would be so picturesque if a tall bridge vs tunnel was built. The real reason this is project was not done earlier was because of the former Governor (who will remain nameless) killed the new tunnel to Penn Station which NJ would have only had to pay a small portion of the costs (less than 30% if memory serves me) This in turn would have also caused this bridge to be replaced before 2016. Now both projects are being federally financed. If you want projects like this to continue you know which party to vote for come 2024.

Construction of the new bridge was given final approval to proceed in April 2022 and later began on August 1, 2022. The first track on the new bridge is scheduled to be operational in November 2025.

    This needs to be done. To get into Penn Station Amtrak has to cross the Hackensack River twice, the Hudson twice, and go under the East River. These crossings are outdated and obsolete and impedes traffic on the Northeast Corridor and makes Amtrak lose its bullet train status.
    First is Portal Bridge this bridge connects New Jersey to Stanton Island over the Hackensack River the problem is when a ship comes into Newark and docks at Stanton Island they have to go through the locks at this bridge. It creates a problem because to allow ships to pass they have to deenergize the entire northeast corridor for one boat and the bull gear that supports the bridge it gets stuck all the time delaying traffic while the tracks are realigned and the wires are reenergized. first priority is to take this bridge out and replace it so trains don't have to stop for boats.
    Second problem is the Pelham Bay Bridge from Extreme Trains this bridge goes over a canal and the Hudson and when trains leave Penn Station they are stuck here because they have to wait for boats and the Northeast Corridor is deenergized. This one also needs to be taken out and replaced so Amtrak does not impede boats.
    Third is a major chokepoint The North River Tunnel under the East River coming into Penn Station. During Sandy these tunnels were flooded and the north tunnel is condemned. Amtrak needs to drill a new tunnel which is wider to allow more trains to get into Penn Station.
    If they do this they can double compacity on the Northeast Corridor and move their projects elsewhere where it is needed.

    Why only 90 MPH? That's not even high-speed and leaves us so far behind the Chinese and the rest of the world when it comes to train travel.

      From this point it is not very far from NY Penn Station, like less than 5 miles, higher speed is not needed at this point

      Penn station is very close by and it would take some beyond impressive acceleration to reach speeds of like 150mph by the bridge, and there is also a big curve. If the country wants to invest in hsr on the nec, the investment should first come to rurral sections where it it is cheeper to build.

      The way to actually cut journey times is to go less slow. 60 mph to 90 mph saves as much time per distance as 105 mph to 250 mph.
      The local geometry won’t allow higher speeds, acceleration would be impossible over that short distance, and the much higher cost of going significantly faster isn’t worth it.

    Meanwhile in Florida, privately owned Brightline is done. Everyone at Amtrak happy about this "New Era of Rail" should be fired.

    • @artemiscool67
      @artemiscool67 11 місяців тому +5

      True, but Brightline got to build brand new track; whereas Amtrak has to replace hardware over 100 years old which makes it way more involved.
      With that said, Brightline is definitely the future and seems to get it done w/o govt red tape

    • @andrewreynolds4949
      @andrewreynolds4949 11 місяців тому +2

      Brightline isn’t quite finished either, as of early September. Replacing this bridge is probably one of the best moves Amtrak can make

      @@rapunzel1701 That's not really how FRA certification works. I know some people think the US government / corporations / etc are all entirely corrupt, but they're not. It's just paperwork and ticking boxes

      @@andrewreynolds4949 Don't be so naive. It's how all Fed Agencies work, FAA, FDA, FRC, NIH, HUD. They create the paperwork just 'facilitate' it. It's fine, these bureaucrats don't give one whit about us, I do trust the railroads to not want to crash their trains and end up in court.
