With support equipment he can funnel the laser in other directions i.e. from his hands or his legs. Through training he can use it more without getting sick/tired. It's a decent quirk. It's all about how you use it. He's probably a better version of cyclops who can't see without his visor. And yes, I know Cyclops doesn't shoot lasers and shoots a concussive blast.
