This video is a bit different from the usual ones, since it doesn't necesserily cover a pirate topic, but I find boucaniers to be very interesting, and it's a topic that doesn't get nearly enough coverage. With this rich background we'll also get full context for next week's video, which will be all about how the Boucaniers became pirates, and why Buccaneers deserve special recognition from the other pirates of history
Hello mate, have you had a chance yet to embark on the new pirate documentary on netflix? It is 6 episodes of 40 minutes about the golden age of piracy in the Caribbean. It seems decent enough.
This was another great video into a pirate related topic. The frontier life of buccaneers was wild in the Caribbean. I recal how Exquemelin said that all people in Hispaniola in his time were either hunters, planters or pirates. Anyways cheers once again!🏴☠️
Was recently reading about the history of the Caribbean - such a fascinating topic. Very well put together sir, excellently narrated. I love forward to see more content. :)
Actually glad you explained Matelotage. I'm quite tired of people using it as a argument but not really knowing what it meant. Also just wanted to say I really enjoy your content. Keep up the good work!
Thank you P3t3r, In the future I'm going to make a dedicated video on the Matelotage because there are a lot of details I had to leave out, like inheritances
@@GoldandGunpowder Oh really? That's nice. As a piracy enthusiast myself I really appreciate in-depth looking at those kind of topics. Also, may I suggest some futore videos ideas? How about video about life of a pirate or a sailor through the eyes of such. Although I think that's gonna be difficult finding eye-witness, diaries or letters made by sailors.
That's a video I really want to do. There's a good book called "Pirates in Their Own Words" that covers some of their opinions quite well. It depends on the period of course, but in the late Golden Age there was a sense of desperation that's very interesting.
Something funny that I just remembered, one afternoon when I went to Publix to order a sandwich, I noticed in the menu that the Buccaneers (the football team) had a signature sandwich. When I read the ingredients I thought to myself “What?! No pig products, no jerky or smoked meat. How dare they call this a buccaneer sandwich? Lol 😂
Something else I wanted to ask you, I remember you replied to me that my Argonaut couldn’t be referred to as a frigate because it was a slave ship (there for the correct term would be Guineamen). But is it possible that when it was captured and refitted with more guns, and refitted more for battle rather than human trafficking, then it can be called a Frigate?
Aside from the rats and cockroaches roaming the ship, they would have a ship's cat to hunt them. Dogs could also be found aboard ships. You would also see chicken and goats kept for their eggs or milk. Sometimes they brought pigs and cows aboard for meat. Buccaneers also had a lot of parrots, but they didn't seem as common for pirate pets in the 1710s.
@@GoldandGunpowder Why would they bring parrots? Were they useful somehow, like, expensive for trading or did they just make good, relatively low maintenence pets or something?
I have a question may I know where did they acquire clothes, bandoliers ,muskets and other equipment such as fire starters etc ? Edit:did they use pistols ?
Next video idea : Less-known pirate ships in history like Philip Lyne's Sea Nymph, John Prie's Young Lawrence, Jean Hamlin's La Trompeuse and Joseph Bannister's Golden Fleece.
WELL DONE; History repeats itself: If Spain had not driven the Buccaneers from their livelihood of hunting and meat-jerky, they wouldn't have become fearsome "pirates" who could aim 4 times farther than the Spanish Navy riflemen and a had a rightful grudge. Lesson; The 'powers' that BE, create the rebels that are Inevitable when 'powers' take, just because they "can"... how Timely !
Brilliant work sir. What information is available for the Jewish pirates in the Caribbean? It might be before your time frame with the inquisition an all that. But it's interesting nonetheless. I read some where that Jean Lafitte was a converso from his grandparents.
During the Golden Age Jews weren't prominent as pirates themselves but were active merchants on Jamaica, and they were very supportive of the English occupation in 1655 from the Spanish, due to the pro-Jewish reforms under Cromwell(and then Charles II). Since the Jews spoke Spanish they were driving in the illicit trade with Spanish colonies

The argonauts sailed with Jason, when he went after the golden fleece. Good video though
Idk if someone already did this correction, but the Argonauts were the crew that sailed with Jason on the Argo on the quest for the golden fleece.

You're a legend for commenting on all my videos! You can expect a new video every Thursday
@@GoldandGunpowder And every Thursday you can expect a view ,maybe
Came for Boucanier history, stayed for the amusing use of TF2 voice lines.
Nice video. I remember learning about the buccaneers in the sixth grade.
Heavily armed jungle survivslists who just want to be left alone: Exist

Another reason to love pirates, the creation of barbecue. Any chance on a video about Edward England?
Yeah, he's coming up in a few months in a season/series about Madagascar
@@GoldandGunpowder Nice

no horse lard?!
By the way, thank you so much for mentioning my comments on your video, that’s a first one for me. 😄

Excellent
Love the vid! you should make a video about different pirate ship types from around the world like barbery ships ect.
I will do a series about the 1500s eventually, including the ships used by Pirates during that period(Galleas, Galleys, Carracks, etc)
Nice topic my friend😇sorry just now watch your video this is your friend from philippines😇
I always use this video for falling asleep😅

I didnt know what Bucan means or that we got the word Barbacoa from the Boucaniers. Very interesting and cool video !
I've been reading a book about William Dampier, "A Pirate of Exquisite Mind".
Ta again.Good stuff
2:24 is that the native theme from Sid Meier's pirates I hear?

Did you like the video Spiros?
@@GoldandGunpowder Oh yes, it was great like every other video you have made!!!!!
Thank you, I will look at those ships you recommended and see if I can fit them into the ship videos I got planned
@@GoldandGunpowder Ok
Someone invent a time machine because that pirate barbecue sounds so good and I need the recipe
Speaking of food, any pirate or seafaring recipes from the golden age of sail?
Max Miller featured some sailor dishes using hardtack/bisket as an ingredient, you can check him out on UA-cam.
Utube channel, Townsend...covers old recipes, a bit of weapons from 1700s. Clothing.
But if you look a bit you can find somethings

Seek help
Great video! When in conflict with Spaniards, would Valets be trusted with a musket to help the Boucaniers, or would they have no role in skirmishes?
I don't think they were but I don't have a definitive answer since I haven't found any information regarding it
The argonauts is a different story than the odyssey
In French, " faire du boucan" is slang for to make a hell lot of noise
Boucaniers hunter of what my friend before they become a pirate???😇😇😇
pig, cow
@@GoldandGunpowder oh thankyou my friend for replying me❤️
