Currently a trainee technician at Peterbilt while I’m in high school. I’ve been looking into getting a good starter tool box and a set of tools to help get me started. I just wanted to say thank you for this video!
Starting out as a tech, I appreciate you showing me a toolbox that I can actually get by with as a beginner in the industry, rather than getting everything snap-on and such. Great vids for guys like me starting out
I’ve been doing it for a little while and you really don’t need many things off of the tool trucks. All of my 1/2 inch sockets are Pittsburg and none of them have ever broken. I have Pittsburg Matco and snap on ratchets and I always pick up the Pittsburg ones. You can get plenty of things at harbor freight that will last you just have to be careful of what you’re buying. Some things are worth spending money on. Wrenches are worth spending a little money on but that gear wrench set he has is the set I have and they’re great. Torx and hex sockets are you get what you pay for. Be smart about it and don’t let the old guys fool you into buying everything off the truck. They’re making way more than you and can afford to buy a lot of things off of the trucks. Good luck to you
Thanks for the tour and tool ideas. I was an auto tech at a Toyota dealer and currently looking for work. Just a thought to make more room, get some socket rails either metal or polymer ones from home depot or harbor freight and put the sockets in the blow molded cases on rails.
Yeah that's what I ended up doing when I switched to mainly working out of my cart! Thank you though man I appreciate it! You can't go wrong with diesel though around here! Personally I'm a huge fan of toyota and Volkswagen since they seem to do everything better than "American" brands
I’ve been in the automotive repair industry for 28 years and my 6S boxes don’t have “power “. So what. Harbor Freight’s color power strips work great. Never forget that toolboxes will never make you a dime. Never. House sized toolboxes are for egos and bragging rights only. Good quality tools make you money. I do suggest that you develop a good relationship with one tool truck rep. The brand isn’t as important as the guy himself. Hardline tools like impacts and bits I buy from the tool man simply because I’m not chasing replacements in my off time.
I agree 100% I only but off the matco truck when it comes to trucks. With my capri though they overnight no questions asked me a replacemnt 13mm a month back.
Great video man. I'm in my first year over working on diesels over at Ryder, mostly frieghtliner and international, HD and MD. Love to see the variety in your box. My shop is all snap on fan boys. Anyway man, hope to see more soon. Take care.
Thank you I really do appreciate it, I came from a background where you use what you have so brands really aren't a concern to me. If it works and I get can get changed out quickly then I don't mind.
Awesome collection of tools you got. I take it your pb dealer doesn’t have hose reels and makes you supply your own airlines too. Worked at rush in California a while back and didn’t really care for the flat rate world. Matco cut ties with ingersoll back in 2010 or so so all their new premium impacts are Taiwan ir clones. Nitro cat or ir, everything else just doesn’t cut it.
Nice toolbox setup. I suggest picking up some coordless as it will help and I’m not taking dewalt. Ingersoll Rand iqv20 or the new Matco line are the best.milwakee is good too.. I just personally hate the feel of the coordless tools.
Because they feel like if you don’t have snapon or high end names you are a worthless mechanic . In my opinion of course . I’m 7 years in the diesel field and my first year I had a huge snapon bill , paid it off all my money went to that and now I don’t step foot into the truck unless I’m swapping out broken tools. I swear by Capri tools , gear wrench and some harbor freight surprisingly lol .
Obviously you’re into diesel, but any tips for an auto mechanic trying to build up his tool kit? My end goal is to be a race technician, if you have any insight with that. Awesome video man, really clear and concise, good stuff!
A complete general set will go far with general automotive. Race cars dont require the amount of tools a regular tech uses. Biggest thing is dont go into debt on tools. Made that mistake now i stick to gearwrench, sunnex, and looking at capri.
@@KonmanxX lol hahaha. I have stopped buying stuff from the trucks and started using amazon more and gearwrench/tekton they make pretty decent stuff and those ratchets are literally better than any cornwell ones they hold up to really harsh abuse.
Just had to create an account online and have your school and instructors information ready, they will confirm it then it should be activated if the school participates with matco
Honestly it was offered to me after I met the manager out at another job and I got a phone call about 6 months later with an offer. At that time I only worked on my own things
@@KonmanxX haha, that's good. the last time i used mine was for a timing belt job. ratchet with socket was too thick to fit between pulley and frame so i turned the socket with a pipe wrench to break the pulley free.
You got a nice setup, but hey you have some tools that look like they been used for 20 years but theyre only a few months old.. You'll see other guys with the same tool but USA made or equally as good in quality that is 20 years old. That $280 Chinese pliers set was a good example of going the cheap route. Those hammers maybe another example.

Glad to see more techs not falling into the Snap On trap. How about an update video???
I've got one I did a few weeks ago but I've been house hunting in my spare time lately

Hell of a setup for someone who is in school.... very impressive.
Thank you I really do appreciate it!

Dig your layout. Well organized and efficient. That finish on the Matco box looks durable.

False toolboxes and all what in it can help you make more money some places ask how much your tools are worth
Sweet setup man!
Thanks buddy, I filmed an update about 7 months ago and haven't gotten the time to upload it
Great tool box tour. I work at a Kenworth dealership in Texas. I'll be doing a tour soon.
Awesome setup
Personally I LOVE the newest style Matco air impacts. BADASS, used in a custom semi shop daily
Hell yes, you got my sub! GREAT setup Man.

Awesome setup for time in the industry. Well done tour! Show us your school box when you can. Subbed.
Thanks man I really appreciate it, once I have time in between classes I'll try and get one up
Good tour dude
Nice box tour. I currently work at a dealership working on Hyundai but want to move to big trucks like peterbilt, kenworths and so on
Good advice for rooks! Helping to avoid taking out a mortgage on tools! 👍
Has more than i have in 2 years 😂
Looks like your off to a good start
Video of your school tool box:
Hell yeah!
Thanks! I'll get one up as soon as I can!
look into the napa allen set I have the set and love them there like 100 come with 3 lengths. deisal mechanic also
I love my sunex sockets

A guy in the shop swears by his nitro, but I'll take my snappy mg725 any day.
Fatboy Diesel
I used to have a mg725 as a backup and the damn thing is so loud that I ended up just selling it
Cornwell has a few rebranded ir tools.
Jared Legier yeah anything that’s part number starts with “irc” is an ir
@@AdriftAndAtPeace323 yes and I actually have the irc 9000. Only difference between that and the ir version is the titanium. And it's a little heavier

I also work for Jx man. Nice lookin box.
Where at?
Konner Tolan Michigan
Nice box
Thank you I really appreciate it!
Why do our mechanics have to justify not having ridiculously overpriced tools
Because they feel like if you don’t have snapon or high end names you are a worthless mechanic . In my opinion of course . I hope you don't get confused and take a drink of that oil sitting next to your pretzels. I thought that was a cup of coffee! :D

Honestly all I've really worked on engine wise is dodge so I have a lot of speciality tools at home for that, other than that just metric galore.
A complete general set will go far with general automotive. Race cars dont require the amount of tools a regular tech uses. Biggest thing is dont go into debt on tools. Made that mistake now i stick to gearwrench, sunnex, and looking at capri.
I think I know the guy who recommended those gear wrench ratchets and sold that electric ratchet to ya. Hes a pretty cool guy from what I've heard
I heard he's a little light if you catch my drift
@@KonmanxX lol hahaha. I have stopped buying stuff from the trucks and started using amazon more and gearwrench/tekton they make pretty decent stuff and those ratchets are literally better than any cornwell ones they hold up to really harsh abuse.
How did you go about getting a Matco discount? I’m in school rn, and I’ve got a snap on and mac one , but can’t figure out the Matco one.
Just had to create an account online and have your school and instructors information ready, they will confirm it then it should be activated if the school participates with matco
Is peterbilt paying for your schooling?
hey yoo i got a question howd u get a job there as in did you have to have a background schooling anything minimum
Honestly it was offered to me after I met the manager out at another job and I got a phone call about 6 months later with an offer. At that time I only worked on my own things
Was that capri allen set standard or metric? Haha I just had the metric set come in the mail but the package was empty so I dont have the tools
99 cummins Ram
It’s the master set 30032 sae/Metric
no pipe wrench? lol.. I end up finding a use for mine too often 😅
I honestly haven't ever had the use for one, the only time I see them used here is on alignments and I'm not certified to do them 🤷♂️
@@KonmanxX haha, that's good. the last time i used mine was for a timing belt job. ratchet with socket was too thick to fit between pulley and frame so i turned the socket with a pipe wrench to break the pulley free.
Nice video! I’ve been at freightliner for almost a year now. Where in Illinois are ya? I’m in Springfield area.
I'm in Bloomington IL at JX, and I really appreciate it man!

With the pliers I've upgraded them when they go bad from use. For the hammers I just see them as hammers.
Who's got my creeper? Yo Ted I know that's mine. None of you have a pink one.
Hell yeah, no one has said anything about it! I guess being 6'5" 280lbs comes in handy lol. Jk cancer is a bitch!
