What a great tune, I love the words...... I've now spent half my life on the road driving trucks and in those 20 odd years it's the first time I've heard this song.. Good times, bad times I've always earned an honest living for my mrs and kids and in all honesty enjoyed the work. Nice one Merle !!!!!
I gotta say that I shed a tear listening to this.Breaks my heart to see ya go Merle. But your songs will live on forever.Love and miss you.Just kinda felt like i knew you personally. And it takes a great songwriter to convey that feeling
I lost a buddy and a fellow driver on my board. He stroked out or had a heart attack and dumped it in the ditch. He was a great man and lived for his kids and grand kids. The piece in the newspaper was just a very small piece on the 4th page the next day. I pulled out of the drop yard that day and was in traffic for 2.5 hours just getting around the wreck and saw roller skates stopping so they could take pictures of the wrecker pulling the wreck out. Sorry if I ruined someone's day I just had to get that off my chest.
i have always loved country music and oklahoma is the heart of country, i have always been proud of country music and my country my country as well i served with the 101st airborne in vietnam i have seen men killed by rockets morters and gunfire but the crulest thing i ever saw was done by a doctor working in one of the largest hospitals in tulsa for more info please see msbones1950 for more info
My dad drove from the time he graduated from high school till he retired in 05 he got his 50yr diamond in 2016. He passed away peacefully from Parkinson's disease the other day
First time I heard this song I was 5 years old living in a small town that didn't have a stop light. I could hear the trucks driving on the highway at night and I would dream of a life on the road.... Thanks
Truly going miss Merle Haggard. Amazing song. And song Movin On Tv theme. Country Music not same was back 1970s good old classic truck driver songs on radio. I should know my dad was trucker. God bless all trucker. Keep this America going strong today.
This is great. I gave up the road to raise my 4 kids, after my wife split. This is the kind of thing that keeps me attached to my love.........The open Road........I thank God for Merle and the individual that put this video together as this is what keeps me going day to day.
Woke up one afternoon in Great Falls, MT. Turned on the tv and the crawl across the bottom of the screen said "Roger's Pass closed to all but emergency traffic" Called dispatch and they said "Yeah you're going you're hauling groceries" So even though the Montana Highway Patrol and Highway maintenance said "No way we ain't going out there if you want to go your on your own". I was off to work. Took off in a blizzard and headed towards Missoula got to the bottom of the pass and threw on a set of 3 railers, got sideswiped by some farm truck hauling Christmas trees and came up on a Safeway truck hauling Montana doubles. He'd slipped a drag chain on the back trailer so I called him on the radio. He said yeah I see it back there but I'll fix it when we get to the top of the pass. Since I was only pulling a single 45 I took the lead, he dropped back a few miles so his headlights weren't in my mirrors and I plowed through snow coming over the fenders of a 69 Pete all the way to Missoula. I 'd call once in a while "Hey George you still back there, he'd answer just following your track man let me know if you go off the road" The good old days...
Truck drivers rule the world!! Without them we would have nothing!!! From cars to the food we eat every night!! I grew up with a trucker (my father) from over the road to local 8 axle work (steel coils), to molds and dies. Wouldn't trade my childhood for nothing!! Really want to get my CDL and hit the road my self:)
There's no one better than Merle Haggard just the best country music singer ever lived but we have your son Ben to keep your music alive he's a chip off the block rest in peace Merle
A one stack mack with a shack on back makes more of a truck driver out of you than a high hp Pete that does the drivin for ya. Don't get me wrong, I would love a nice big shiny truck, but this little mack brings home the same check.
my dad drove a 53` i think in snow and he turned right at a stop light and the trailer got stuck in the snow and a other trucker helped him shovel out the trailer.
Don't feel bad brother most of us have lost women that's the down side I always tell the Young drivers so you want to be a truck driver are you married how old are you you say 21 how long have you been married 3 years it won't last over five not in this line of work you're going to miss birthdays graduations births holidays and anniversaries still want to be a driver good luck I just ended my fourth marriage I'm not getting married again instead I'm going to buy me a new Western Star it'll be there longer than any of them was
@roadrebel1 hate to tell you but i haul something alot more dangerous than doubles or triples i drive around all day with gas, diesel, or jet fuel behind me. can u say that for the doubles or triples no they wont go boom
Sorry to break it to you all....we do actually get snow down here & plenty of it. Just that alot of the truckies dont get much of a chance to drive in it.
Thanks for posting ,Mike. For a singer that didn't want to sing truckin' songs,Merle sure does a great job on this and 3 other truck drivin' songs that I know of!!
@roadrebel1 What are you talking about? Why dont you try hauling doubles up in Maine in the middle of January in a blizzard with 50 mile per hour wind, blinding snow and 35 below 0 temps. We have a lot of rugged terrain here in the US. Cant haul multiple trailers.
I've driven trucks in the States and the biggest problem is the many different laws that you encounter from one state to another. It's a nightmare so they mainly stick to 48 and 53 footer tandem axle trailers to remain legal in every state. NY and Oregon you even need different rego plates. Closer to the Canadian border you start to see B doubles and such configurations. Very complicated and frustrating. Keep on trucking!
@roadrebel1 @roadrebel1 Ever hear of the Pelletier ? The tv show on Discovery Channel? Thats the harsh Maine woods with them guys pullin doubles and weighin close to 400,00 pounds. Gettin little to no sleep day after day. Harsh Maine winter's, Maine's crappy roads, Maine's mud season. I bet you wouldn't last a day.

Well son you got alot to learn. The haul road is bad but the conditions are always the same...just an image, brought up by a whole lot of cockiness.I hauldd on that sprerad myself many of times.I now am a bull hauler.Try doin what you do on 12 or 15 hrs of sleep in a whole week, let alone loading and unloading of cattle as well and then driving 5000 miles a week...do that then you can call yourself a truck driver, till then just cowboy up and realise we are all truckers and show respect for us pro's
my dad pulled a 58footer in snow and got stuck but hey!! my dad had his hazmat and all he drove dobbles up in the colorado rockies and had to drive to get there to train... and he staid up all night and almost fell asleep over the road so... it takes alot...
I've seen Double Road trains like all the time while driving along I-94 in Chicago, but in Austrailia..... They don't even have a awesome Interstate sytem like the You-Ass-Eh!!!!!! (USA)
David Wise Lol!!! Yeah Dave, we did. Had a lot of fun at the time too. might pull out of okie City headed to LA another ol boy would pass you as your getting on that you ran with before gets on the radio hollaring Come on let's go to Shakey prospector!!!! And off ya went then ya pick up a couple more, just EVERYBODY talking about whatever , family, fishing, telling jokes ECT, and the miles are just flying by, soon there's might be 15 or20 of ya , wasn't any Rambo crap, or bad language just a group of driver's keeping each other awake, and having a great time doing it. I truly miss those days, I've been doing this for 45yrs now, and getting ready to hang it up. I'm sorry you missed out, It COULD be that. way again if ya could get folks off the damn phones and tablets. But still, every so often you will come up on a small group running along at night just walking that dog and kicking that kat, and having a good time doing it. Pick up yer Mike and jump in who knows, ya may even end up running with us old dogs that's still out here. stay safe out there pup, the ol prospector we be 10\10 copying the mail,
