2000 Ford F250 7.3 overdrive light blinking

- This F250 keeps having an issue where the overdrive light keeps blinding. Does anybody know why this is doing this and how can I fix this issue? Thanks.

od light blinking means the computer on the truck is receiving a fault code from the transmission. your truck runs the obd II system so any parts store should have a tester that can give you the codes (example of code P0500= vehicle speed sensor has malfunctioned, or p0562= low battery voltage.) pull the codes and google the code to find what it means and how to fix it. after fixing it disconnect the negative terminal for 15 min to reset the computer and clear all codes, : )
It can also mean a broken wire or a plug unplugged. Just fixtures mine and it was the wire that runs up the shifter in the column over the years it just broke. Took cover off top and bottom of column found the break quick. People can spend a tone of money rebuilding or changing Trans and still have the problem. Good luck fellas and check the plugs and shifter for broken wires first
My 97 7.3 e4od had a blinking od light and was banging through the gears. Changed the speed sensor on the rear end and fixed it for 15 bucks. Make sure you disconnect the batteries to reset the computer.
Where did you get the part ? My Napa one was worse than what I replaced
My over drive light turns off everytime the truck does so I just don’t fuck with it

this is a torque converter code usually because it has not enough fluid going through it and your transmission will slip because of it.
Had this same problem except my speedometer was also broken. It was the speed sensor on my truck
I had the same problem and I changed the Transmission Range Sensor and it solved the problem
Mine did this for a bit, transmission lasted awhile, no more transmission but gonna get one
Check your break lights including the overhead rear cab lights; these lights are in conjunction with your tow and will show resistence throwing a code.
OU814U I have a 2001 excursion, the OD light starts blinking when I'm idol or going slow then my engine turns off. I had this tranny rebuilt like 6 months ago due to complete shut down. I took it back to the same Mechanic, he changed out speed sensor, said he couldn't figure out what else was wrong. you mentioned break lights.... well I did notice a while back that my overhead break light isn't working anymore. But what exactly is it that I should look for? and how is that in connection with the tranny?
mine just started this today in a rain storm rear inside cab light flickering ,horn blowing ,speedometer twitching, and overdrive light flashing it threw a code for p0500 and p1000 do you have any more insight on this
Ended up having to replace a sensor and the shift cable. Also I did a transmission flush and oil change. Needless to say all is fixed... Take it to a ford dealer and keep them to do a free diagnostic.
Ford dealers do not do FREE diagnostics. minimum charge 89 dollars and up to 120 dollars just to check it unless you have a friend that works there.

I have the same issue as well. However it is only intermittently when I am going from a stop, then to accelerate at all i have to almost put the pedals to the floor to make it actually going anywhere. Its almost like it doesn't want to shift into 2nd. Once it shifts, which it shifts hard, the light will stop blinking and will be normal again usually until about a few stops later.

I have the same motor 7.3 liter diesel; not sure about the transmission model #, but my transmission gave out on the road; and went to the nearest Ford Dealer, and they sent the transmission out to be rebuilt, as the transmission is no longer available new from Ford; Picked up the vehicle yesterday and drove 200 miles to get home, and when I arrived about 20 miles from home the od light started flashing; turning the vehicle off / and then back on reset the light. I contacted the Ford dealer , as it was the end of the day; they will get back to me today

a sensor might be going bad or screwing up to do with your Torque converter meaning either your torque converter is locked up when it's not meant to or it's throwing codes to make the computer think it's locked up and in reality it's not
Sounds crazy but mine did the same thing and it was the alternator. Something about it wasn't getting enough voltage?
overdrive is always on with these trucks normally. when the light is on overdrive is off. look in owners manual. anyways when you you shut the truck off and turn it back on it should always go back to overdrive by itself. this is interesting because i never really used mine but was towing a few heavy loads and wanted the extra engine braking so i turned it off....since then i have noticed that 2 times so far when accelerating the light starts to blink. knowing that its supposed to reset i pulled over turned off my truck and turned it back on and the blinking stopped. i dont think i will use this anymore because i have heard rumors of these things getting stuck with the o/d off and this will only allow the transmission to function in 3 gears (2001 ford ranger 4x4 offroad automatic 5 speed transmission.) i might also add that i have noticed my transmission fluid was low due to a very minor leak which i have yet to fix and required topping off. i'm unsure how long it was driven with low fluid as i just purchased the vehicle recently (used). so check your fluid levels, dont turn overdrive off and dont haul loads heavier than recommended (especially if your truck is old with lots of miles like mine) i re post on this issue when i learn more
same problem for about a year.....pulled trans and all was perfect...plungers all operating ; replaced prindle, speed and differential sensors...still a problem. Had the Electronic control Module flashed and all has been fine for over 100K miles

Will that cause the truck to take off in 2nd gear and not go into overdrive until the teams has reached a “certain temp”? Like when I had my edge tuner in my truck the trans wouldn’t shift into od until the temp was like 145 or something like that. My od light used to flash then I saw a “hack” on UA-cam that if you turn the od off before you crank the truck it will trick the computer and that fixed my flashing problem but it still shifts weird. It’s driving me crazy and have been putting it off for a few years now. I’ve had the trans built to a stage 2 and it still does it. Please tell me it’s just a simple temp sensor

I have a 2003 f150 supercrew and it doing the same thing my overdrive light is flashing a year ago a shop found a bare wire arching against the steering coulm.
What if my od light is suddenly not working? Seems to shift up through all the gears but I can’t turn od off and the light is not on? It’s on 1999 F53 chassis
I need HELP!?!! I have a 99 f250 7.3 and I put a php hydra tuner in it and I drove it in the drive way and it felt fine but I went down the road and it wouldn’t shift so I went back home and disconnected my battery and took the tuner out and it’s still not shifting and the overdrive off like is flashing !!!!
No one needs a torque converter. I manually convert my torque. 😂
Mi navigator did the same thing before it went bad and couldn't go no more it means your transmission is about to give out or an electrical part inside the transmission is not working.
Changed the shift bc the wire wore out it was 40buck then all of this dump thing going on now day it double the price to 80 buck dam ,how can an poor get those life ✌️

I am dealing with the same problem. I own a 2001 F-350 SD 7.3 Diesel with a 4r100 transmission. This same issue started with mine in 2006. I start the truck and if i drive more than 5min the OD light flashes and i loose OD. If I turn OD off at start up. It runs 1st,2nd and 3rd with no issues. My gas milage sucks because im running it at higher revolutions. I was told it was either a .35 cent teflon washer or the Solenoid block. Since the solenoid block has three solenoids 1st,2nd and 3rd. and There are 3 valves in the valve body. I dont understand what or how OD kicks in. Once I understand that the piece of the missing puzzle might be found as to what is causing it. Right now It feels like an elcectronis issue. The od works as long as the fluid is cold. When it warms up it flashes. Once the Transmission fluid reached 140°F. The OD gear starts to slipp and then the light flashes. ??? toruqe converter ($250.00) bad? Solenoid pack ($250.00) bad?. I hate rebuilding the whole transmission because it can just be a simple fix. I just can not pinpoint the cause.

As it turns out for my truck situation the only resolution was pulling the transmission and inspect.
I went with Allstar Transmission for price and for what they delivered. All there transmission are dyno tested before they leave there shop. they have a 2% return rate on there rebuilds becaus they dyno test every thing that leaves there shop. Most rebuilding mistakes are cough on the dyno before they leave the shop.
How much was the rebuilt transmission?
how do you need if overdrive is on or off?
qick question if the light is on is it in overdrive,? and if the light stays on and wont go out but shifts into over drive what could be the issue ?,replace the switch and was only able to turn off the light once or twice and now it wont go off but it does stay in over drive crazy ass ford losing my mind
jesse james get a code reader. Min was in the shift pak. It was telling me my trany is hot.when it is not. Everything works fine just flashes. It I'd in the board in the pak. I could fix it but not worth it at this point. Been doing this for 6 years.
just get a different one at the salvage yard , mine light just stays on starting to think the new column shifter is junk replaced the end switch on shifter and it only worked like maybe 2 times but was able to switch the trans into over drive so left it ,but now the light still stays on ,just curious when your in over drive is the light on or off ???
figured mine out the whole doorman column shifter from china is junk got a new end switch and was able to talk to the trans finally but still cant install it with the end cap because if you do the light stay on and the switch wont work for some reason never buy doorman parts there junk

I think you should replace the vehicle speed sensor.
I know this is an old video, but I have an issue, and am going to put a speed sensor on. Maybe if it fixes it, I can help someone else. My check engine light is on, and the of keeps kicking off, with the light flashing. RPMs seem to fluctuate also. Will let everyone know how it turns out.

what is the overdrive exactly and what does it do
Overdrive is just a fancy name for 4th gear in an automatic transmission. The button is there in order to "turn it off". This prevents the transmission from shifting into 4th. The button is used when driving in extremely hilly conditions or pulling a trailer or heavy load. By not using the highest gear (generally 4th) is prevents a lot of wear and tear on the clutches. If you pull a heavy load with overdrive "on" the transmission will generally shift back and forth between 3rd and 4th gear often to maintain speed. This will eventually cause the transmission to fail.

i need help i was driving jt and the od off light was flashing and too a while to up shift and when it did it jerked but it now wont go forward just revers what do i do?!
I hope this helps, I tore down the trans to rebuild after putting on a few parts and changed the oil still no forward gears only reverse , while rebuild I found a broken piston ring on the center piston , no burnt clutch's ,but tat would let the fluid pass and cause no forward gears put all in new and updated the trans with better internal parts , it ran great shifted great ,

This light is telling you that something is wrong with your transmission internally. Get it checked out before you have to replace or rebuild it

chances are your transmission is hot.....most likely a new torque converter is needed.
That happened to me, ended up replacing the blinker light fluid.
