5:10 This is a big error. The Elantra N comes standard with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires which is quite literally the next step up from the GR 86’s Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. In fact the Elantra N’s tires (245/35 19) are larger than the GR 86’s tires (215/40 18) in nearly every dimension. Therefore the tire advantage is actually given to the Elantra N.
14.2" rotors also. Wheels weigh 31 lbs. though. So heavy. They both pull just under 1G which is impressive that Subaru gets the same performance with light weight, low cog and balance.
Hi Joe it’s Mark. We asked ourselves the same question. Toyota GR86 or Hyundai Elantra N? The Elantra is a extremely desirable car. Turbo power, beautiful wheels, and useable back seats. However when I saw GR86 the thing is gorgeous, reminds me of a Porsche. You are right about rear fenders. Leather and ultra suede interior is on another level. So we bought the Toyota. Have loved it every day we have owned it. Handles like on rails. A blast to drive. Great video, you and your wife are a team!
I was looking long and hard at the GR86. I took my 2017 Elantra in for maintenance, just to get everything up to snuff - new tires, regularly scheduled maintenance, etc., - as I knew I was looking to trade in eventually. So, while I was working remotely for the day at the local Hyundai dealership, I decided to stretch my legs in the showroom. Only two cars in there - full black out versions of the Santa Fe and Santa Cruz. Then the showroom doors opened behind me, and a beautiful, white Elantra N Line rolled in - right off the truck. It took my breath away - the lines, the blackout areas. Then I looked inside - the grey coloring with the red stitching, the leather wrapped seats and wheel. Took it for a test drive, told the salesperson to work up a trade in value on my then current Elantra and what it would be for this - and that we would take at 5:00. 30 minutes later, that beauty of a car was mine. Made some mods - installed interior well lighting (set to red to match the stitching), 30% tint, getting ready to rebadge with gloss black instead of chrome. Just a wonderful vehicle. And I got $9500 on my trade in - which I paid $16,000 for back in 2016. So glad I got the N Line. At 47, my favorite vehicle I have ever owned.
Couldn’t agree more, both the Elantra N and GR86 get to the point of being FUN, sporty cars for a good price, but in VERY different ways! Great video as always
I give Subaru and Toyota a lot of credit for developing these performance twins...they do drive so nice, although the interior does feel a little cheap. That said, I still prefer my MX-5 Miata for being just a bit more purposeful, overall. Either way, I'm just glad these kinds of cars are still being made because not many people buy them (sadly).

Well this just comes across as ignorant. Fair enough if you prefer the 86, it’s a good car, but it certainly doesn’t have better everything and it’s not just numbers on a spec sheet. Those numbers translate into real world performance, where the N really has the edge. The N also has far better tech, interior, and customisation options. The exhaust. If you wanted an auto then the N’s DCT is a no brainer. Lots of ways the N could pull ahead, figuratively and literally.
@@adamb8552 I think what your not understanding is it is about driver feel, people get caught up on horse powers numbers, 0 to 60, etc. Those things are not what makes a great car, to be honest the Elantra N is in a different category with it being a small 4 door sedan. Cars that really compete with the GR86 would be like the MX-5, and the S2000 of the past.
@@throttle7504 I do understand that, it’s why I owned a previous gen 86. Those numbers add a lot to the driver feel though, it’s hard to find a video of someone driving an N that isn’t grinning and I had that same experience. Not just the max numbers either but how they’re put down, I find it fun to have the full torque/power available from about 3k RPM vs having to redline an 86 to briefly achieve a (smaller) peak HP. I bet you’d like the 86 a lot less than you do now if it had 150hp. They may be in a different category technically but if you’re weighing up these two as a driver’s car then they directly compete. It would be much stranger to be choosing between a new GR86 and an S2000. For me, the N came out on top and its performance played a big part in that. It pretty much comes with everything you would want to mod the 86 with, stock, for a similar price and under warranty. I agree that the 86 looks better, and RWD is nice, but at the end of the day looks are superficial and in real world use RWD has limited advantage over a FWD experience as good as the N’s. It’s good for losing traction, sure.
@@adamb8552 This is an argument I’m already done with, I can already tell your the typical person who is all about numbers and bragging, I would own an S2000 in a heart beat over a POS Elantra N, I could care less the N would beat it in performance, the N is an ugly car cheaply built.
Such a fun little car especially with a manual transmission equipped. And Neptune blue fits this car perfectly. The color really pops! The Elantra n does have a better sounding exhaust. You hear more pops and bangs. This car is missing that but you can always tune them
I am personally over all the exhaust pops and bangs, the GR86/BRZ sounds fine to my ears. However, I would probably disable the audio enhanced exhaust feature. I absolutely hate those systems, unless you can turn them off within the system itself.

@@farhan007 the end result is the N is a faster car everywhere. Hate to break it to you,but both these cars were designed to be cheap performance cars, the 86 uses a Crossover corporate engine and two companies had to work yogether to make costs. It's not a pure design. Neither are pure designs like a 911 or Corvette. Sorry. So what you are left with is exactly what they are, fun cars around 30k.
@@AnonAnon-qi4ts the world is a gradient. It isn't discrete. So yes the 86 sources parts that are mass produced. Of course the motor is sourced from a mass production line here the block is used on other platforms. But on a scale of dedicated sports car to practical economy car with economy car traits like high h point seating position, high center of gravity, low chassis rigidity etc, the N is closer to the practical economy car platform and the 86 is closer to the bespoke not copy and pasted dedicated sports car with sports car traits. The 86 is going to be slightly slower in a straight line. According to Car and Driver, who make sure their tests are done in a consistent manner, they are literally a tenth of a second apart in a quarter mile drag and .1 mph off in trap speed. So slightly slower, but far more go kart like engagement and far more predicable rotatable lol ight weight chassis that is going to be far more eager to turn in and change direction due to a more balanced weight distribution with less mass up front.
Agreed, the value proposition of the Elantra N blows this 86 out of the water. I have the Elantra N and it's a riot. Take it into the twisty roads and I'm yet to find its limits. Such a well balanced and tuned vehicle. It was tuned on the Nurburgring afterall 👍
Thank you Joe for your work. Once again, you changed my mind. I think I will get one if I can. The car looks amazing how you describe it. I have a Nissan Sentra SR 2020 and it’s just not enough fun or power for me.
I prefer the BRZ over the 86 . The suspension is better on the BRZ and the front bumper looks more aggressive on the BRZ . That Neptune blue is dope though
I've got no real reason to trade in my 2020 Honda Civic Sport hatchback. It's been bulletproof with no problems, even surviving having a tree fall on it with very few scratches and one small dent, not even breaking the glass on the hatch. With this redesign, the performance, the ability to tune and modify the car for more performance, and pricing that doesn't suffer Honda's markups on the SI and Type R's, trading into this car sounds awfully tempting.
If they took out the suede, had full "leather" seats, added a sunroof, and had decent cup holder placement, I'd like it a lot more. The suede really kills it. I just can't see it being very durable, especially on the door, right where rain is going to drop in.
I think they're both great cars you can't go wrong with either but they're also very different. I definitely think the Elantra N outperforms the GR86 in every way; it has more hp, more torque, it's only about 300-400 lbs heavier, it's comes with a valved exhaust that you can change with the press of a button. Better tires. Better seats, bigger screens, more practical. The Elantra will beat the GR86 on a dig and a roll and also on the track with it's electronic limited slip differential the Elantra N is the way to go specially for it's price since they're both the same and also take in consideration the markups that dealers are putting. So it's all about preference but the Elantra N is clearly the better car!!!
Gotta critique the center console area. The screen buttons could be moved over to allow more vertical width, the heated seat buttons could be pushed up for a small open tray, the dead area behind the heated seats could be where the charge ports and connection are located with another small storage slot. The cup holder space that housed the connectivity could then be used as a storage space then.
I like this car. It's a great alternative to the Miata, which I love. That back seat is useless, but rear space means zip. Between the Miata, BRZ, or GR86, I'm begining to move toward the GR86. Or maybe it was this excellent presentation.👍
I remember 2 years ago you reviewed a 2021 Honda Accord Sport SE in Still Night Pearl(blue).I ended buying one in July of that year.Couple days ago I sold it for $26,500.I can't wait to buy this GR86,preferably in Neptune Blue.I am waiting until maybe like June or July of next year(2024) to purchase mine.I really hope Toyota still offers this exterior color option.Great review👍👍

The back seats are perfect for 2 legs less people! This has always been my dream car since the 2013 FRS, and i have finally saved enough to pay it one in full but going for this exact color and trim. Maybe halo white!
The GR86/BRZ is the winner in my book for a few reasons: good looks (inside and out), longitudinally mounted engine, manual transmission option and rear wheel drive (that's a huge win with RWD). There are more reasons, but those are the major ones for me. I probably would have bought one but they were impossible to find (or order). Instead, I bought a 2022 WRX.
Incidentally, the same has been found on the Elantra N with DCT as well. As much as 330hp at the crank. The same gains weren't found on the manual version though for some reason.
The way this GR86 drives and feels is just amazing.

@@AnonAnon-qi4ts is it? I'm confident that the gr86 would have a significantly higher lateral grip limit with equal tire on both cars.
According to Car and Driver, who make sure their tests are done in a consistent manner, they are literally a tenth of a second apart in a quarter mile drag and
.1 mph off in trap speed.
Personally I prefer Joe’s car reviews over Doug’s any day of the week.
A Doug score 🤍
Thank you Joe for your work. Once again, you changed my mind. I think I will get one if I can. The car looks amazing how you describe it. I have a Nissan Sentra SR 2020 and it’s just not enough fun or power for me.
I can relate the Sentra has everything but hp

I prefer the BRZ over the 86 . The suspension is better on the BRZ and the front bumper looks more aggressive on the BRZ . That Neptune blue is dope though
It looks less aggressive with that smiley face, 86 looks more aggressive
Ohh u got a point in the suspension
@@lariosmendoza right?!😊
BRZ has the plastic that is replaceable if you were to scratch it going over a curb while the gr bumper needs to be replaced as a whole

I drove one once and ordered it immediately, I love the way it drives
Haha got u 🪝
Yeah but you got any automatic
@@eternallogic6394 still a 86
If they took out the suede, had full "leather" seats, added a sunroof, and had decent cup holder placement, I'd like it a lot more.
Thanks for that great break down of your points!
@@RaitisRides I love your videos man keep up the great work 🙌🏽🔥
Great points. It's really ugly but I might have to get the N to have room for the family plus a little fun when I'm solo
For those who know initial D
This is Takumi's great grandson's 86 for delivering tofus and drifting the mountain passes of Japan
Looks like it would be pretty fun to take around a canyon. I like the looks of this one with that Neptune blue. Keep up this awesome content!!
Got a 2023 premium last week 😁😁😁! Love it!!
Just to let you know about the shift knob you can get a GR badge as an added accessory on both the manual and automatic.
Yep talk to the stealership
This would absolutely be the bomb to run the “Tail of the Dragon” up in North Carolina.
It’s definitely not loud enough for me. I would have to drop a better exhaust on it
Absolutely
Those roads have no bumps i need to live there
Team Raiti, great review! Every time I convince myself I don't like a car, you change my mind...
Good promoter 😅
Love the color 💗🔥🙌
He already forgot the Elantra N comes with Pilot 4S too. The Elantra eats it alive on the track. You need add cooling capabilities to the 86.
Love it, but still go with the Elantra N. Power, practicality, sound, track ready. Great work however Toyota!!

I like this car. It's a great alternative to the Miata, which I love. That back seat is useless, but rear space means zip. Between the Miata, BRZ, or GR86, I'm begining to move toward the GR86. Or maybe it was this excellent presentation.👍

Hi Joe and for myself I feel the better question is how does it compare to the hyundai Veloster N. Than to he Elantra N. That is for mor of body stlye from a compact hatch vs a compact coupe . Sold my 17 BRZ just yesterday in the hopes that Subaru releases another TS/STI model like they did in 2018 and I'll scoop one right up.
Dream car right here and in my prefect spec as well! Awesome review love your content 👍
He’s a good one
PSA: these cars actually make 215WHP/175WTQ (which is about 250HP/200TQ at the crank). So essentially, they are underrated for whatever reason(s).
Incidentally, the same has been found on the Elantra N with DCT as well. As much as 330hp at the crank. The same gains weren't found on the manual version though for some reason.
@@wbwayne8887 the manual ones are putting 270-280whp
