- This is the theme to World of Sport, which is a British television sport anthology programme, which ran on ITV between January 2, 1965 to September 28, 1985 in response to competition from BBC's Grandstand. Like Grandstand, the programme ran for several hours every Saturday afternoon.
World of Sport had an iconic theme tune and opening credits which featured the ITV Sport logo and the programme name as trailing banners from light aircraft. The long running theme known as The World Of Sport March was composed by Don Harper. A later theme was composed by Jeff Wayne.
RIP Dickie who left us today (20/2/23). Saturdays will never be the same.
RIP Dickie Davies. A gentleman, scholar and everyone’s favourite silver fox. If they don’t play this wonderful piece of music at his funeral when his coffin is brought in, then I’ll be disappointed. God Speed sir.
I hope they did what a wonderful tribute to him.
A staple part of Saturday afternoons for yonks, a true gentleman from gentler times. Thank you Dickie
It's Saturday teatime, my whole life lies ahead of me and the possibilities and opportunities are blinding. I could cry!
My dad would say the same. Wish I could have experience the 70s
You were there. That in itself was being gifted. Nothing else matters.
Tea time? You’ve missed Big Daddy 🤣
Me too, same feelings, sometimes I say "what have I done", but I've lived this long, that in itself is a bonus. Let's make every next moment last too! 👍😊
there was always 321 to fill the evening !
saturdays were morning swapshop, collect gran, watch wrestling, attend grans card sharp and horse racing school :) watch more horse racing, watch the vidi printer then final score, have tea, watch 321.......glorious
Aargh! Learnt today of the Very Sad Passing of the Great Presenter Dickie Davies..... RIP Much Love to your Family.
RIP Dickie Davies, this evokes memories of a better time, childhood memories....
Tiswas in the morning & World of Sport in the afternoon - when telly was good !
And Dukes of Hazard at teatime!
The days when there was only 3 channels..... And one of those was snooker.....
@@pyt7778 Doctor Who (Tom Baker ) and Basil Brush,...great days.
Oh yes.
And not forgetting the pink panther cartoon show at around 5.15 straight after grandstand or was it world of sport so long back now difficult to remember
RIP Dickie. A consummate professional who'll be sadly missed.
Iconic. Very much part of my childhood in the 1970's. RIP Dickie Davies
Playing this atmospheric and bright piece of music, having just learned of the passing of its long-standing presenter, Dickie Davies. Many a Saturday afternoon, spent watching this sports program whilst admiring and chuckling from time to time, as my father gave his armchair commentary, on a whole host of different sports. Great times, to reminisce over.
Sent back to the ‘70’s, watching WOS with my Grandparents/Parents… Miss you all😢
An absolute gem of a theme tune that encapsulates what World of Sport was all about.
Sadly, another voice from my childhood has gone.
RIP Dickie Davies.
Takes me back to my childhood, when life was less complicated.
I agree definitely better days back then,
RIP the great, truly great, Dickie Davies.
Oh my God this brings back such memories. Saturday afternoons with world of sport and the brilliant Dickie Davies; wrestling, on the ball, racing, speedway, the results at 4.45. Well it's all changed now, sky has set the tone and there is no general sport magazine available on English television. If there were, I doubt it would get anywhere near WOS. The theme tune says it all - high quality all the way. God bless world of sport and all who sailed in her
The female typists were hard at work while Dickie was speaking to us via the camera.
@@grahampearson5670 your right Graham sir . Special memories of world of sport especially the ITV 7 with John Rickman who ust to drop his Trilby hat n welcome every body and John Lawrence too. Also the Wrestling n football results n Dickie Davies saying ' Have a good week till next week!!..My late parents watched too n Fab time to grow up sir..Kind regards Glynn n Greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands
Yea me and my dad always use to watch the Wrestling together but soon as they took Wrestling away and world of sport it messed thing's up and now look at the rubbish you get these days Saturday's wasn't and never will be the same - but my dad has been gone 11 year's now - but they completely messed it up taking world of sport, wrestling and Crandstand off the tv
Spot On !! Classic 70’s & 80’s TV
I've always been curiously wondered where Dickie got his silver streak from, he's up there wiv Frank bough, David Coleman with his 1 nills, super dessy lynam, jimbo rosy and Steve Ryder
The world of sport theme music brings back a lot of memories of an early Saturday afternoon in the 70s and early 80s when it came on TV I'd watch a bit of the sport and when the football scores came on I'd have my pools coupon in my hand checking my numbers then when it finished I'd go to my local for a pint i sometimes sit down and listen to the world of sport theme music and reminisce fondly of the memories of those days and get lost down memory lane how great and bloody wonderful times they were
Superb, £1.00 pocket money, Big Daddy, chippy tea, Corona pop, Metal Mickey, Look-in magazine, 321 with Ted Rogers, families together. I bloody miss the innocent 1970s
We would go to the Dogs, afterwards. Now that has gone as well. This Country has had it.
Bought a tear to my eye hearing this again memories of Saturday afternoon sport watching with my late dad oh happy days
Mum in kitchen cooking the tea.. lovely day s
Clive Evans it nice to have our memories even though there is some sadness as well
Me too.
I used to walk into town with my dad after this, he'd get the local paper, a few final groceries and spend ages chatting to a friend who ran a radio and TV shop. Dark winter evenings, lights reflected on wet pavements, then back home and Dr Who.
I still miss my dad, and life as it was.
@@dahliagreen5919 those days are gone sadly I would go back if I could but at least we have our happy memories.
being a kid in the 70s brilliant.
lol i know went my first match alone when i was 11 at anfield lol no way now, great times.
My 1970's Saturday routine, Swap shop for breakfast, World of sport for dinner, wrestling with Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy, and Doctor Who for tea, Tom Baker !!. Good days, I bore my son with it too.
AGREED LOL

A fantastic theme tune to an iconic programme. Grandstand was great, but World Of Sport was a must see on a Saturday afternoon. A unique range of sports...Dickie Davies...Fred Dinenage...and the best thing of all..Kent Walton and the wrestling. FABULOUS !!!!
Fred Dineage has just announced that he is retiring from TV presenting - in 2021!
@@jmshuk Fred is a tv legend. What a guy...
Great theme tune, one of the best.
You used to hear this very same long version as it finishes for another Saturday. Brilliant stuff, oh my days, so much memories.😭
2020 & pretty much all sport cancelled. Play this through & remind yourself how great Saturday afternoons used to be !
A superb theme.......
Memories of dull, cold & wet Saturday afternoons, watching wrestling & then listening to the footy results come in. Happy days!!
yes I agree also remember avin a bet every week on ITV 7 and 6 and waiting 2 see arsenal score and if they was on list 4 soccer on itv
It would come on at 12 or so,and I wouldn't move, until the credits went up at 5.15. Then it was Catweazle,Metal Micky or Chips.
My dad doing the pools. Everyone had to be quiet as the scores were announced. I can still smell his socks. Spam sandwiches, tinned fruit cocktail with Carnation milk for tea. Magic.
What Memories wrestling on a Saturday Afternoon watching with my lovely Nan 👵 xx
World of sport grandstand starsky and hutch, match of the day black beauty the 70s were just the best days wasn,t they ?
Best Sports Theme Ever ITV World of Sport 1965 to 1985
Used love Saturdays because of this tune also of Dickie Davies👍👍👍🏴🏴🏴
This really reminds me of the days of quality tv where sports were down to earth fun and World of Sport threw in the unusual sports too. Why can't they make programmes like they used to. Dickie Davies was on Chris Evan's Radio Show a few months back, and many have asked the same question.
Fantastic tune. Great ring tone....
Pure class,such happy memories
Brings back loads of happy memories of a better time.
I never cared much for sports but loved the music. I can still remember the white s on the blue background.
World of Sport March: This was the cut -down commercial disk version. 2:18 seconds was the original length with the (5seconds) ITV stabs at the start. Harper died way back in 1999. The commercial version here was ‘Sporty Type’.
Don Harper you absolute legend
What great memories Saturday afternoons was made for world of sport
Just the start of the music brings it all back watching Dickie Davies on World of Sport. Great memories thank you.
No doubt the best theme ever. Brings back so many childhood memories. Inspirational
I felt proud hearing this in VTR in 1970.
Absolutely fantastic theme always excited me when I heard it.
Bought this in the 60's on a Columbia 45 by the Don Harpur Orchestra, this along with the ORIGINAL Grandstand theme, conjour up a forgotten era, but when great British Light Music prevailed,so memorable.Fantastic, many thanks !
I feel this wonderful orchestration is better than the BBC’s Grandstand theme. This is so uplifting!
Not as good as the original Grandstand theme , in my opinion.
What a great theme song and simpler nicer times
Hearing this now makes me feel very nostalgic and really sad knowing that Dickie Davis has passed away and
because we will never see Saturday afternoons like those again...
Iconic tune to iconic tune. Everything stopped at 4 o'clock for Kent Walton and greetings grapples fans and welcome to Fairfield Halls Croydon for another programme of freestyle professional wrestling! And of course Mr Saturday afternoon Dickie Davies. Hope he is alive and well and thank you for great Saturdays during my childhood.
Two falls, two submissions or a knockout ! 😁
@@juliancrittall3291 Ace wrestling then sir but the ITV 7 Topps for me .Kind regards Glynn n Greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK 🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🏇🎄
Or the Wolverhampton Town Hall. Max Ward the Referee. One-a-Two-a-Three-a.
“Now grapple fans …It’s Tag-Team-Time”….
Happy birthday Dickie Davies. You utter legend.
Dickie Davies made everything on the show sound so important, but that was his genius. I was and still am, a big horse-racing fan. Dickie would always end the day's racing with a teaser for the next week. The best was when they did the ITV Six rather than Seven, because you knew the 2.55pm next Saturday wherever was the "big one", probably a major, like the Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park. That was where I first encountered Lord Oaksey RIP "my noble Lord".
Great days I want yo go back asap
John Rickman,who always tipped his hat to the Viewers,who actually Won the ITV-Seven,a six-figure sum,then worth,in today's terms,over a Million.
great theme
This takes me back
Dickie Davies Rest in peace. Just love this time Xxxx
Like so many of the comments which I have read through and identified with. A great time to reflect upon and reminisce about, in my teenage years, during the 1970's. This theme tune, catches the mood of that time, in such a joyful and sublime way.
That was when Saturday was sports day on the TV. Not anymore, even Grandstand is shorter today. Wrestling, horseracing and football were the order of the day back then. Sad to see times go by and now just treasured memories :)
You can thank Greg Dyke for that. Then he went to BBC,and brought back Come Dancing.
Absolutely right, it was a classic tv theme.
This theme got used on an Barclays Bank ad for those who were trying out walking football recently.
God I wish I was back in the day.
they don't make theme tunes like this anymore!
What a Theme Tune...... Love it.
Great theme tune....brings back many memories of happy Saturday afternoons...thanks
for posting it.
Nostalgia fest with the credits blowing in the wind, tied to the back of the plane. Iconic TV.
Dicky Davies legend
Iconic Saturday afternoons wonderful memories thanks world of sport and dickie Davis
R.I.P Dickie Davies. Sad loss of the possessor of Broadcasting's finest Moustache.
My dad would be watching World of sport on a saturday afternoon, give me my £1.35 pocket money. Then I'd go over to Zodiac Toys in Basildon to spend it, and be back in time for the football results before we had tea. Great memories!!
What wonderful days bring back thanks mum and dad
black and white clunky tvs and big daddy v giant haystacks, and a killer theme tune. Happy days!! Downloaded and now my ringtone, to annoy all them young 'uns!!!
Ah memories of my late father talking about this and how saturday was sports day all morning until like 6pm. This and Grandstand.
Thank you so much. Memories, sport and proper music, oh and Dickie Davies!
A section of a few seconds from 1:21 was used to open Benny Hill's "Word of Sport" parody from his Feb. 18, 1976 show.
Not forgetting the iconic tune for the final scores !!
Awesome best TV theme of all time IMO !
R.I.P., Dickie.
Dickie davies legend watched every Saturday morning with my dad awesome times
Wrestling, rally cross, speedway, darts, horse jumping and a few strange sports thrown in pure class when saturdays were ACE
Hey I remember Sesame Street on before Tiswas shows how old I am! Then Waiting for what seemed like an eternity for World of Sport to come on.
If I remember rightly, it would all was start with 'On the Ball' with Brian Moore. Then a bit of racing in the afternoon followed by half time football reports and then the Wrestling , Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Mick McManus and co. If you were lucky you might get a bit of speedway or Greyhound Racing but that was generally the format! Great times!!
Tiswas - required viewing for adults, never mind the kids !
Best theme tune ever
Classic Tunes Which Only Meant It's SATURDAY When I Was A Kid...……...Brilliant
Saturday afternoon. No school till Monday. Mum making dinner in the kitchen. Great times!
R.I.P. Dickie Davies who sadly passed away the day I wrote this.
When I last watched this , my only concern in life was , we're is my evil knevel toy 😆
love it
World Of Sport on Sat Afternoons especially if it was the FA Cup Final or the Wrestling made it such special programme in my younger days.
Takes me back to when i was a kid
Magic.....Saturday afternoons in the 70's
This is what Saturday afternoons were all about. God bless Dickie Davies - proper legend
Rest in peace Dickie Davies 1933/2023
I've just gone from a sixty odd year old to a young lad, WOW What a journey.
The fIrst time I ever saw Speedway, Drag Racing, American Football, greyhound racing, professional wrestling, Aussie rules football and stock car/banger racing was on WOS. Grandstand was great, but it simply didn't have the variety the WOS offered.
RIP Mister Dickie Davies, and your 'cup soccer'
great memories of those sports themes
my all time fave nothing beats this
An absolute CLASSIC tune.
A classic tune indeed dating back to Saturday afternoons in the 70's. I remember the childrens program Play Away was shown after World Of Sport. Yes I loved Play Away back in those days.
@Aspie Mt69 It was usually ITN saturday teatime news and sport at 5.05pm after the World Of Sport followed by your regional news sport and weather and in some ITV regions Metal Mickey would start at 5.15 and others would either be 5.20pm or 5.25pm
Strange. My memory was that Play Away and the wrestling clashed, because there was always a big fight with my dad, who wanted to watch Giant Haystacks, Big Daddy et al, and I usually lost. My mum would give me some fudge as consolation. Later, as I grew out of Play Away, I came to understand the fascination of the leotarded sport, my favourite was Kendo Nagasaki. I remember it well, because it was the only thing on ITV that my father would watch. He used to boast that the ITV button had dust on it, and woe to me and my brother if we were caught watching Tiswas of a Saturday morning. He was utterly fed up when ITV did Brideshead Revisited, and my mum put her foot down…!
memories memories! this is like a time machine to me and transports me back in time.
Rest in peace Dickie Davies
Get up Saturday morning, breakfast then ITV for kids cartoons, Tiswas, and while mum and dad go out shopping, World Of Sport! A perfect Saturday.
Wonderful theme Wonderful show.On the Ball followed by the ITV 7,Then some mad sport at 3pm then at 4pm the wrestling.Perfect
I loved it
