      i haven't finished this video yet so idk if this was covered, but it probably has something to do with being stuck with hollywood records for so long. before eics, i was always neutral towards sabrina. good singer, solid stage presence, songs were catchy and poppy but she didn't stick with me until that album. it felt like she was able to be a lot more personal and bold in her lyricism, and she also developed a really strong aesthetic for the album/tour that was absent from her previous work. but that's just my two cents from someone who only vaguely knew about sabrina before eics.

    Even if you’re an artist who never sees main stream success, if you’ve established a stable Fanbase than you are more equipped for a long running career. Sabrina is it a point where even if she never sees a number one hit she will always have a loyal following and will never “fall off” THIS is true success imo. Much better than being an overnight success with a ton of hits and awards.

    • @M-sc5bc
      @M-sc5bc 8 місяців тому +15

      That’s completely subjective and I believe many would disagree… if an artist has many hits they likely have a developed fan base. Them “falling off” would be having the same numbers as an artist without main stream success

    Hollywood Records definitely kept a lot of control over her music. Yes she was still in her experimental stage but they definitely stunted her growth. I’ve been a fan since girl meets world and I remember the fandom by the end of the Singular era wanted her to get out of that record. Glad she managed to switch to a different one. Island Records barley promotes her but luckily she recently signed with UMG so she will be getting that worldwide promo

    I think the slow rise of her career has helped Sabrina understand how to approach social media (maintaining a private life and being humble). Despite all the mass hate and threats towards her, she's still pushing through and providing a lot of grace to those who I honestly think don't deserve it with the nasty way they've treated her. To compare using one of your examples, Olivia Rodrigo gained overnight success and was not as well-prepared on how to approach social media, resulting in her laughing at the drama at the height of her fans bullying Sabrina, calling the drama "funny", accepting an SNL cameo that called Sabrina a "bastard", and refusing to directly address the situation (only a vauge statement many months after Sabrina's been threatened and bullied by her fans).
    I love how Sabrina's not scared of expressing her femininity despite certain fanbases pushing their internalized misogyny onto her since 2021. She's a very resilient person. I can't see many celebrities who're able to not clap back / break down publicly or make shady decisions, and even though she admitted she was on the brink of a public breakdown, she didn't, which was probably best because it would've been used against her. And all this during her early 20s. That's so much pressure being put onto an adolescent. People keep thinking she was old during all this drama but she was an adolescent getting told to kill herself and given bomb threats (even now) for dating someone who has an ex.

    • @pancakesxoxo1064
      @pancakesxoxo1064 8 місяців тому +27

      I absolutely agree with everything you said!! Only a slight insight. I think her being humble and mature has not so much to do with social media or being a public figure. She is humble by nature from a very young age and used to talk about her parents always teaching her to be humble. Fun fact: her nickname was BumbleBee kept by her parents to always remind her to be humble.
      That's why it was such a surprise for me when I found out all that about her dad. She used to speak so fondly of him. I can only imagine what she must have been feeling.

    • @jessicajoerndt428
      @jessicajoerndt428 8 місяців тому +37

      I also think the biggest difference is age. I do think that the slower rise to fame has made Sabrina work harder and be more humble for sure, but she’s also five years older than Olivia. I do think Olivia is a bit immature and we can tell this from her attitude on certain things, the stuff that she writes about, and that’s fine because she’s only 20 and when she was writing that stuff she was 18/19. But I do think there is something to be said about the fact that Olivia is an only child, had a Disney show that showcases her singing, which helped her get her first billboard hit and gave her a platform for her first album, things came a lot more easily for her, without even trying. versus Sabrina, who is five years older than her, and had a five or six year climb from the time her Disney show ended, where she had to establish herself as a singer and work hard for people to notice her. There’s a huge difference in maturity and attitude between the girls and while I have a lot of respect for Olivia for her skill and talent as a songwriter, I feel like I have more respect for Sab as a person.

    •  8 місяців тому +12

      so truee, and nobody dares to say it so clear. a lot of people justified olivia’s behavior because “she was 17” as if that is not age mature enough to be a good or a bad person in situation involving massive bullying

    The Madonna music video that was designed and released deliberately to create controversy was Like A Prayer (1989). It was filled with religious imagery, including scenes inside a church (sound familiar?), all designed to get a rise out of Christian conservatives. Which it did. The Catholic Church even urged a boycott and organized protests. The result: Madonna became a bigger star than ever.

    Amazing videooo!! Been waiting for this one! Just to add onto your thoughtful conversation; Nicky mentioned the ‘expectation variation’ and Sabrina did this in two ways for her concert. Yes the nonsense outros where it was a guaranteed viral moment for her fans to record, but a way to also involve her fans and get them excited for the ‘expectation variation’ was a game she made called ‘UnSABscribe’. This is where she would ask a fan in the crowd about their juicy breakup and then depending on how the fan feels now about their breakup (they had 3 options, Sad,happy, horny) she would dedicate a cover to them (she she had prepared 3 different covers for her fans, and they got to choose what cover she would sing.) There was loadsss of viral moments from when she would play the game from her tour!!
    Also to add, she was on 5 album HR contract like you mentioned, but released 4 albums with them. Her legal loophole to get out of the contract was claiming the soundtrack for the movie ‘Clouds’ since she had produced songs for it.
    She also mentioned in an interview that if she knew what signing a 5 album contract at 14 would mean she wouldn’t have done it (I think it was a teen vogue interview she did in 2021/2022) and has also alluded to Hollywood records being a toxic work environment ( she literally got sued by HR managers and wrote Sue me after firing them), has said she was told what she was and wasn’t allowed to wear in music videos, but she doesn’t go into too much detail about what happened at HR for legal reasons.

    1. Ah I'm sad you guys didn't mention that her other Disney moment before Girl Meets World was her being on an episode of Austin and Ally where she was a big focus. It's not that important really but I just wanted to mention it.
    2. I think one of her first big songs before EICS that I don't think necessarily is in the "disney big" category was Sue Me. It did really well and was one of the first times more mainstream people started noticing her. Obviously it wasn't a huge breakout, but I remember at the time thinking that her breakout finally came with the popularity of that song.
    3. Another thing Sabrina does at her shows is similar to the example you guys talked about with performers engaging with their audience. At her shows this year, she would take a moment to talk to someone in the audience and get a story from them about a relationship thing they've gone through. Then she would ask that person how are they feeling (and they'd have 3 emotions to pick from) and that answer determined what song she would sing at that moment (which was usually a cover song). It was a really funny segment in her shows.

    I was a bit taken aback when I realized she already had quite a big back catalog while still in her early 20’s. And that it showed progress, uneven and still not fully realized, but when you’ve already got a few LPs under your belt that young you’ll have a whole range of techniques you probably don’t even know you have. Just like a lot of people, I been a fan of Sabrina Carpenter since Girl meets world and Eyes Wide Open it's really amazing she finally gets the recognition she deserved. Her evolution-especially- as an artist is remarkable, each of her albums have helped her experiment with different genres of music (new carpenters MUST LISTEN TO HER OLDER MUSIC PLS). She came to my city for the EICS Tour and her stage presence was phenomenal, everyone was having fun and singing her songs and btw the initial venue had to be upgraded to a new one BECAUSE THE AMOUNT OF PPL ATTENDING WAS BIGGER THAN EXPECTED (probably bc of the nonsense outros). Seeing her perform made me (and anyone who followed Sab for a while) a bit emotional like I was a proud mother, even tho she’s older than me. It does suck it took SO LONG for her to get this recognition, but, it’s at the right place at the right time. I'm so excited for her new music and what she has in store. the whole slow burn thing reminds me of a kurtis connor podcast i listened to the other day, where he spoke about how important having a slow come up in the comedy scene was for him. doing years of stand up and becoming comfortable with it, THEN transitioning to vine and youtube allowed him to really establish himself as a comedian. when he was starting out, if his set at a local comedy club didn't go as planned, it would fine because no one would see it except the people in that room.
    lots of tiktok comedians nowadays blow up overnight, which means they don't have time to grow as a comic (especially if they blew up during COVID and don't have much IRL experience). they have a huge audience watching them when they're still starting out! and stand up comedy isn't exactly known for being easy, so it's very easy for these people to bomb and not take well to criticism because they're not used to it

    She is SO big outside the US, it’s such a shame and so crazy that people there think she is not good enough or known enough just because she might not be popular there. I’m from latin america and before she went on the eras tour she had a brief concert in brazil and people here in argentina and latin america and south america were begging for her to come tour here, and when she was announced as part of taylor’s tour we were so happy and they was so much demand for her we wanted to do side shows of her emails i can’t send tour. She is very much known from YEARS and same thing happens all over latin america and europe, but americans think it’s all about who is trending there on tiktok, and so many big artists that they think are so big could pass unknown everywhere else i swear 🫖🍵

    I think part of the reason for why Sabrina still hasn’t gotten the full recognition that she rightfully deserves, is because there’s still that group of people who are mad at her over the situation with Olivia and Joshua. I mean just recently at the Jingle Ball, I forgot which song it was but she literally said that she received death threats all because she liked a boy. I think there still that dislike towards her over that even though Sabrina, Olivia, and Joshua have all moved on or at least tried to.

      It doesnt help as well that she has been getting this other girl or side chick tag on her since she also got involved with a love triangle drama with shawn mendez and camila cabello as well as with dylan obrien and his gf. It doesn’t look good on her and her PR really needs to do something about that.

I also have this feeling w wich sabrina concert i liked more (since she was the opener at my shows) depending on the nonsense outros that i got (like i got the "loirinha" outro so i automatically remember that one being better). Obviously it’s the best if you have like a mainstream following + a strong fan base but I think having only a strong fan base is better than having only a mainstream following. You can build a fan base if you blow up with your first single but it’s not easy. I think Sabrina can adjust way easier to being famous. I know everyone wants quick results but I wonder how hard it is to adjust.

    Love what you said about success being unpredictable but always coming to people who keep persisting. I know many talented artists who get crickets in response to their music or films (which are very good) but I admire them for still staying passionate about their craft. Mainstream popularity is in no way a measure of success imo, there are many other things like mastery of your craft, profits and stability which factor in.

    It’s crazy that Sabrina got so much hate because she was blamed for Olivia’s relationship ending, when in reality it’s a teenage romance, and Olivia had the audacity to call her ex a sociopath while building an entire career from shit talking him (and subsequently Sabrina) in all of her top 40 singles.
    Olivia Rodrigo is the sociopath in that scenario.

    One of my favorite things to do when I am in a concert is screaming the lyrics like crazy and dance a lot, and sometimes I see videos of other countries and the crowd is really there to have the experience of hearing the artist sing, and not sing with them (which is totally fine btw, but how things work around here :)

    Another thing with the variation and kpop is that NewJeans has been pretty much remixing their performances and songs for, well only important shows. Their whole thing is always being fresh and new, so it figures, but I loved what they did with BBMA
