I just heard about that yesterday. It’s really unfortunate how that all shook out. Artie was great on the show, but his life became a train wreck, and Stern probably hates that there’s an enabler factor that’s tough to deal with. Probably a lot of anger, guilt, embarrassment, resentment, regret, etc. that comes from that era of the show, and unfortunately, he’s decided to remove all traces of Artie on the show because of it. Unless he discusses it at some point, which seems unlikely, we’ll never know all the reasons for why it has to be that way.
