I Still Call Australia Home - Qantas Advert REACTION
This was beautiful. As a Scottish person who has not lived in Scotland for 10 years it really hit home to me and made me miss my own home. Australians must be so proud to have such a great homage to their wonderful country in this format. Tell me what you think about it?
When Hugh Jackman isn't working he lives in Australia
You should check out the seekers I am Australian
You should react to I am Australian by the settlers, more specifically their farewell performance
This is a beautiful old classic written and sung by Peter Allen, an Aussie who had spent a considerable time away, i think the clip of this song is beautiful but it leaves a sour taste in my mouth having Qantas associated with it, i wont go into why, lets just say Qantas doesn't have the good name it used to have.
Dead set
I wake up everyday feeling so lucky to be Australian. Songs like this make me tear up with pride every time I hear them. We are so blessed.
I cry every time I watch this - The emotion is incredible- Qantas got one thing right at least 🙄
& never crashing isn't too bad either hey!?
@@sandgroperwookiee65 Qantas has never had a jet airliner crash but it has had fatal accidents in the early days.
I cry every time I hear this song. Proud to be Australian. Even more proud that this was written in the first place! Go us! But if you have lived overseas, you understand the truth of the lyrics even more. Kills me every time. X ❤
@@ianrobertson2282 they haven't had any fall out of the air but plenty of bingles on runways.
@@perthgirlwa2407 That is incorrect. Here is a list of their fatal accidents. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Qantas_fatal_accidents
The song has been used by QANTAS as an advertising theme for decades but you should find the original performance by rhe writer and performer of the song Peter Allen , I guarantee that this song brings a tear to every Australian eye everytime its played ,especially when their coming home from even a short trip away from this magical place we call home . It's said that this song along with I AM AUSTRALIAN by the Australian pop group THE SEEKERS should be the Australian national anthem I think a whole lot of Aussies would go along with that .
The small children in the maroon (we pronounce marone) uniforms are from Longreach, outback Queensland. It is the place known as the birth place of QANTAS. The QANTAS museum is there and worth a visit. It is a small country town but they managed to land a Jumbo Jet on its little runway to be stored at the museum. QANTAS by the way stands for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service. It's first flights were joy rides and mail runs but the plan was always to connect Australia to the world by flying from the east coast to the world via Darwin, NT. I think it is the third oldest continuously running airline.
Yes, it is third behind Dutch Airline KLM (Oct 1919) and company called Avianca in Columbia, it was previously known as SCADTA (Dec 1919) but because of the German ties during WW2 they merged with Columbian airline SACO (1933) with SCADTA to become Avianca in 1940. Not sure if that should really count, but most people seem to count it so who am I to say? QANTAS formed in Nov 1920 and is the oldest airline in the English speaking world.
I'd always counted them as second oldest because of the Avianca merge and the fact that KLM and Qantas still largely operate as their original companies did with their original naming and branding.
The 747 that's at Longreach is also the very first 747-400 that got delivered to QANTAS as well I believe
As much as I love this one, the original add was just so much better.
agreed. the one from the late 90s was so beautiful.
Most Aussies will have a tear in their eye when they hear this song :) as others mentioned "I am Australian: by the Seekers would be a great one to react to as would the Australian Tourism ad "Matesong' which was directed towards people living in the UK - which I think you would love as well!! loving your reactions and how genuine you are!
As an Aussie currently in Glasgow I have to say this made me sob. I so miss Australia & I understand how much you must miss Scotland. I love Scotland but I am so looking forward to going home. Thank you so much for posting this ❤
I’ve travelled overseas constantly and lived in many different countries in my life and flying into Sydney Harbour on Qantas with this song playing.. well let’s just say nothing beats it!! Peter Allen wrote this. He was an iconic Australian performer, once married to Liza Minnelli. He passed away in 1992 at just 48 years of age.
nice Kappy
Geez Dr_Kap, I see you everywhere. Lucky my wife can't see, she may accuse me of something haha.
Anyway, besides that, I always appreciate your knowledge and efforts to put Australian artists forward. If there is ever an Australia Day award for UA-camrs who promote Australian artists, then you will have my vote as a lock.
Peter's musical legacy is huge. His beautiful songs are timeless
@@lencooke944 I'd second that Len, @Dr_KAP is amazing at promoting our talented artists and Australia in general on UA-cam and like you said, she's everywhere!! Definitely Australian UA-camr of the Year for 2023!!
Dear Peter Allen (RIP) mat you should also react to Tentertield Saddler... a beautiful song....
That’s Uluṟu (formerly known as Ayers Rock) at the beginning of the clip. This is one of our country’s most iconic songs. Peter Allen recorded it years before his death🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
STILL known as Ayers Rock to many millions.
A bit of a phenomenon, every time I watch this add a random breeze blows dust in my eye. I SWEAR IT'S THE DUST! :D
That one was celebrating QANTAS flying again after Covid. There is a video that runs for about 14 minutes with all of their other ads over the years and everyone is beautiful, I love the one with the young Aboriginal boy who sings the first part in his language. They are beautiful and you only see the word QANTAS at the end. This one you just played has the most QANTAS in it out of all because their planes and every other companies planes were grounded in the desert and locked up. We got off lightly with Covid because of things like this. Our Aboriginal people in the Outback do not have strong immune systems, not the one’s who have rarely left the land. My son left his job and his family for 18 months to go back out there and care for three of the Aboriginal Missions that he and his wife used to take care of. He was supposed to be there for two years but his heart went into Atrial Fib, he couldn’t stop it. So the Flying Doctor was called to get him to a hospital for surgery.
Every adult on this was famous some live overseas and some don’t but they all keep coming home. The Children are The Australian Children’s Choir. The school children are from Longreach in Queensland where QANTAS began. It was our first Airline and it is still the safest in the world but they know the meaning of this song.
I have travelled overseas many times and loved it but nothing is as good as seeing we are about to land at home. We live in a magical land that always calls us home again. Thank you.
Lovely words ❤
The choirs are the National Boys' choir and The Australian Girls' Choir who combined to sing the song for the commercials. And of course, and rightly so, one commercial also included an Gondwana Indigenous choir.
Also Covid kept everyone apart. So 'together again' at the end is particularly meaningful!
Probably in excess or 20 years ago the song was played on final approach into Sydney, brought tears to the eyes!
Son!!! You need to get on a jet and Come On Down! You will fit right in. 8 hrs 20 min KL to Sydney. 5hrs 40min KL to Perth. You can do it!!
The choir also links it back to the original version of the ad, which was just choir kids, with no celebrities.
Thank you so much for the love you show towards Australian culture. Its nice to see your sincerity.
I'm Australian and get emotional everytime I see this. I can tell you're Scottish and I've been before it was beautiful. I lived in the UK in the late 90s and worked as a nanny. I missed home so much, was glad for the experience but couldn't wait to return home
Having Australia closed for two years , people came home back to Aussie happy reunited families together
Yes. My mum's family were always Scots through generations that never changed, just with Aussie accents! Once a Scot always a Scot, same with Australia! 🫂👍 (Jimmy Barnes immigrated from Glasgow slums to South Australia! 👍) You are absolutely right, thank you! 🤗👍😪
Such a great song by legendary Aussie performer Peter Allen. Qantas adopted this song several decades ago and changed the lyrics slightly. His version had the line 'from New York to Rio and Old London Town' but at the time Qantas did not fly to Rio de Janeiro so that changed Rio to Rome. They released this version as the Covid restrictions were eased. Australians were not allowed to leave the country for several years due to Covid and so Qantas cancelled all of its international services. As the restrictions were removed, they released this ad, The scene with the mother and baby reuniting with the grandmother always gets me as there were many thousands of families separated for years. The slogan at the end 'Together once more' meant so much to so many. You should check out Peter's original version as well as song of his other songs like 'Tenterfield Saddler', which is about his Grandfather, his father and himself.
I flew back to Australia from my holiday in England. As the plane drew closer to the top end of the country, there was a band of red dust across the bottom of the horizon. I suddenly felt overwhelmed and teared up. The colour of that dust is so familiar to most aussies - it is one of the dominant colours of home - iron red earth. The others being the yellow flowers of the wattle and the misty blue green of the eucalypts. The experience left me with a great sense of belonging. My family (Munro) are from the Isle of Skye - they emigrated in 1852. I plan to go there one day and see if I can find where they lived. I know where the ones who emigrated to Australia are buried.
Every time I fly home I sing this in my mind as we fly over the harbour. Ball like a baby every time
You need to watch Great Southern Land by Icehouse. The scenic version. Just awesome!
the song I still call Australia Home was a big hit on it's own for the Late Peter Allen.
When I travel, it is a worry that I wont die in my beloved Australia.
There's a sigh if relief when the plane touches down in Australian soil.
Love this!!!! Makes us proud!!!!
Lovely work Matt. There is always something special about coming home after a long period overseas, and the fact Australia is so far away from anywhere, when we travel we tend to go for longer periods of time.
Maybe we need to play a little Loch Lomond for you.
Mat you need to watch and listen to I Am Australian by the Seekers at their Fairwel Live Perfomance at the Sydney Myer Music Bowl I think you will enjoy it so much. Cheers
Qantas sure do a good ad! The song is an Aussie classic by the great Peter Allen!
Makes me teary every time
Love your vids. G'day from Adelaide, South Australia
As an Aussie expat who was stuck in Hong Kong from 2019 until Christmas 2021, alone - this song always makes me cry.
I’m back in Hong Kong now but I always, always miss Australia when i’m away.
Yay Hongkers! Miss that place so very much
Written by an ex-pat , Peter Allen, a touching song. I've travelled, 18/15 million of us do each year, but I'm always glad to be back in my beautiful, free speech, country. That song is so touching.
Great reaction, the song is close to many Australian’s hearts.
I love your Scottish accent, for me it’s as lovely to the ear as Italian and French accents.
Love it every time. From Hindmarsh Island, South Australia 🇦🇺
My great grandparents on both sides are Scottish and Welsh. Even being Australian I still feel a connection to my ancestral country. I’d love to visit Scotland and England. But I’m an Aussie through and through lol
hey Scotty thanks for checking us mate. though if you ever visit you wouldnt be so homesick as Scots are every where down under. \Cheers to you and fam God bless
I am so proud to be Australian. It's home, it's family, it's love and just... us! It was Peter Allen who wrote this and Qantas who took it on as an advert but the words are still true. We are a proud people and love our country.
the opening scene is the iconic ularu or ayers rock.
Good reviews mate 👍🙂 I'm Australian and I'm proud to be Australian, I love hearing these Aussie songs and hearing what other people perceive about Australia. Take care everyone
Also featuring Paralympian Ellie Cole and Olympic swimmer Cate Campbell, amazing in the water
Bro I love your vids, you gotta watch all the commercials that Qantas has done, they’re all epic, then if you want epic go to the Australia Day lamb commercials and Carlton drought’s epic commercials, you’ll love em all
The song was written by Peter Allen who had been living in the USA for many years.
I take it that was post pandemic when Australia reopened its borders so its citizens who had been locked out for 3 years to go home and re-unite with their families and friends? Very touching.
love Australia mate love it
I’m Scottish and Australian, I can’t say I’ve met an Aussie who has no reaction to that song or the I am Australian ones… Qantas just does it well and has a relationship with the song because they use the children’s choir traditionally for the ads
You would enjoy The Seeker's special farewell performance of I Am Australian
That song was performed by Peter Allen you have to hear that version and then you'll understand what it means
Spot on!
natural progression here is to react to The Seekers - I Am Australian.
Should be our national anthem.
This Aussie would love to sing this song but can’t because of the lump in my throat. Every single time.
If QANTAS releases the rights, this should be our Australia's national anthem. This or I am Australian.
I think everyone has said everything about I still call Australia home, so I'll introduce you to the other one that Australians get all emotional over. "I am Australian" by The Seekers
ua-cam.com/video/KrLTe1_9zso/v-deo.html
I'm an Aussie and I get all emotional and teary every time I hear either of these songs. If it makes you cry you get to be an honorary Australian 😂
It was written by Peter Allen, who never forgot his roots.
🇦🇺❤️🥂
My opinion, it should be our National Anthem 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
The original song is in a lot of aussies DNA
I cry every time I hear this.
I still like the original ad of this ad with the same song.
It's just such a shame that through corporate greed (you only need to look up the stories about the current CEO) QANTAS is no longer the best airline in the world.... 'wheres my luggage mate?' but we still love this ad..... it was from better times.....
Even now that he's gone, they still can't get planes where they need to be.
The exciting bit though, you get to hear stories from your luggage about all the places it went, without you.
The leprechaun destroyed QANTAS. Totally.
It’s a shame I can’t fly Qantas from overseas to Adelaide direct -the country’s 5th biggest city!! 🤨
Farkin oath, farkin oath mate
I think that Ad was made after COVID died down and planes took to the air once more!
Love your accent. I agree with you about the ad; it's fantastic, mainly because of the Peter Allen song. It's a shame that QANTAS doesn't live up to expectations created by the ad. Next you should learn about an Australian Christmas by listening to "How to make Gravy" by Paul Kelly. The 2021 version - made during COVID lockdowns - is on UA-cam. If this ad moved you, then the song will definitely move you. Cheers.
Haven't flown with Qantas for years. They were very good years ago.
@@robertmurray8763 Agree with you.
This add is good.
But the original Qantas add with this song was the best.
Too bad they didn’t ask John Travolta considering he trained as one of their pilots.
I would say it is more about how you can take the Australian out of Australia, but you cant take Australia out of the Australian.
I love this version from Olivia Newton John at Government House, Sydney Harbour - promoting Australia during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics - this is a via satellite one from America to Australia so it is a little bad visually to see. Australia has always done via satellite type television and so it was always clearer from the Australian side but I don't think the Americans at the time were used to doing satellite and this was a botch job of theirs. ua-cam.com/video/-xNiJhu6vxI/v-deo.html Olivia was stunning though. Another one that you would like is Oprah's 2010 visit to Australia at the end she had a group of Aussies on stage singing it including Hugh, Nicole, Keith, Liv, Russell. ua-cam.com/video/zYg97BGmmLE/v-deo.html
Can you listen to
the seekers - I am Australian, the farewell
Peter allen created it
Watch "G'day the short film 2022" best thing EVER
It’s just a shame that QANTAS has been run into the absolute ground to line the pockets of the CEO. It used to be a treat to fly with them. Now it’s still more expensive, but if you are lucky enough that your flight isn’t cancelled, the plane will be unclean, they’ll lose your baggage (and break your wheelchair) and the customer service is awful.
i still question why this classic song isn't our anthem by now.... its almost frustrating because all aussies cry when we hear this. when we listen to our original anthem no one has a relative to it AT ALL just like how eventually God Save The Queen stopped. We need this, ad or not
The original is the best.
Please never forget my ancestors the Australian Convicts they were taken from their families and homeland. Used as slaves to build the country I was born in. A lot of these convicts weren’t criminals they were trying to survive the Great Depression yet these convicts have never been thanked or even acknowledged for the deaths, slavery and torture they endured. One day I pray my ancestors will be remembered and just acknowledge for what they went through and what we built along with the indigenous people of Australia. There is a white stolen generation that have never been spoken about. The convicts are never spoken about and if they are it’s in a negative light..
Hey Mate you’re only about 4-5 hours away - come visit. Darwin and the top end is closer to you. Honestly you’d be welcomed.
I prefer the older version
If you think that is good, watch the same song that Oprah showed at the final of her visit.. play that one.. it is even more moving.
The original ad with the Qantas choir singing at various landmarks around the world was better than this one. Same song used. They even made a documentary about how they flew the kids all over the world. The most expensive Australian ad ever.
Qantas is the most hated company in Australia
I love the original song which was written by Peter Allen. He was Australian but lived many years overseas. So this song is about that. For me this advertisment just doesn't work. Two reasons. The words are not at all appropriate for children. These kids have unimpressive voices.
Try watching, Carlton Draught Big Beer ad.
As an Aussie I’ve seen this many times, but it brings a tear to my eye every time. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Fun Fact. Hugh Jackman once played Peter Allen in the stage production "The Boy from Oz". Peter Allen wrote this song. He was an Australian performer who lived mostly overseas and at one point was married to Liza Minnelli.
“Married” he was gay…..
Yes, he was gay, but he was also married to Liza!
@@50NewEyes yes but married nonetheless and they really did love each other. They were married for 7 years.
@@50NewEyes Who knows....maybe he was 'gender fluid'.🙄
@@50NewEyes Elton John was married and had a kid and yet was gay. Now married to his partner.
Freddie Mercury wasnt married per say but his one Love was a woman who he declared had his heart and always would, yet he was gay and just prefered men.
Quite a few gay men both famous and just regular people were once married and had families, yet divorced and opened up to men.
This ad became especially significant after the international borders to Australia were opened again after the peak of the covid pandemic. Families and friends were reunited once more with Qantas bringing people home after months and years apart. A very touching advertisement for all Aussies, home and abroad.
Mat I so enjoy your reactions of Aussie music, sport, culture and now even ads lol. Have you done "I am, You are, we are Australians" by the Seekers? It's another heart felt song/story of our love for this Great Southern Land. This was the final performance of this group and not long afterward the lead female singer Judith Durham passed away. ua-cam.com/video/KrLTe1_9zso/v-deo.html
Yes!
Good suggestion
I agree, great suggestion
Like you I am Scottish born and bred. I came to Australia 56 years ago as a 10 pound tourist to visit family who were already here and I fell in love with Adelaide where I still live. I
Iove my life in Australia and my 4 children are happy Aussies.
But seeing that commercial again I just fell apart missing family. Hopefully I will get one more trip before my time is up. I really enjoy your reactions you are so honest.
Plus you love our John and that's a good thing 👏 👏 👏
Qantas first used this song in an advert in 1999. They've been using it ever since, but it wasn't written for them. It was written and first performed by Peter Allen. The original Qantas ad is considered a masterpiece of the format, featuring singers from various children's choirs performing the song in various world locations.
Yes, I love this version, but the first Qantas one was amazing. & Well, Peter Allen was a wonderful Aussie talent.
This version is really second rate compared to the original advertisements.
The two choirs in the original commercials were the National Boys' Choir and the Australian Girls' Choir of which they performed for the first two or three commercials, then they added an indigenous choir, which I think was wonderful to have them contribute. The commercial where the NBC and the AGC were seen performing in the temple with the Terracotta Army was the first time cameras and performers (at least from outside of China) had been allowed.
Back when Qantas was a great airline.
Hi Mat, I just want to let you know that I think your reactions are so deep and meaningful. I love how you understand Australia so well and can relate to the deep feeling you have about being Scottish, how it is a part of you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us😊
When I boarded a flight from LA back to OZ a few years back, once the plane had taxied and we were waiting to take off the captain played this over the loud speaker and all the Aussies on board cheered and high fivd eached other and some even had tears in our eyes. Quantas have been known to pull that on their passengers on numerous occasions especially during the Christmas holidays because they know how much home means to us!!
This is one of the most touching adverts I have ever seen! Beautiful song!
When returning from a long time OS, the most shockingly unexpected things for me were how clean, safe and perfect the public spaces are in Australia, compared to most other countries. We are blessed truly to have this reality.
One of the reasons this song resonates is that the chord progression is the same as waltzing Matilda which is Australia’s unofficial anthem. We live this song. Thank you for your reaction
I believe this to be the most beautiful ad ever made. 🇦🇺
Hi Mat. Your reaction was perfect and perfectly explained. Yes! We are very patriotic here, we Love our country. In saying that we also embrace our visitors and hope that they have a fantastic time here.
This Qantas advert (even in its many variations over the years) is Magnificent and very well done from start to finish, in the message that it conveys. If you are Australian or have an association to Aust, this advert touches your heart, it stirs your emotions, in what ever form it is.
Big ♥️ to Australia🛫 my home..
and ❤️ to you Mat from🛬 🇦🇺👏👏👏🙋♀️
Patriotic, yes but not overtly patriotic.
You might want to react to The Seekers singing We Are Australian
The most beautiful and precious thing in Australia is our children.
I've never left Australia and I'm not particularly patriotic, but this song, and a couple of other songs (the songs _Only Nineteen_ and _The Band Played Waltzing Matilda_ in particular) evoke a fair amount of it in me.
Its a great advert. I remember when I was staying in the US with friends for a few months, and time to go home, got to LA and booked in at the QANTAS terminal and hearing their voices, accents, and seeing the jet with the big red flying kangaroo, just made me so happy. And of course nearly crying as it finally circled over Sydney. You can take the girl out of Australia, but never Australia out of the girl. Couldn't live anywhere else.
Thankyou Peter Allen
This is a Peter Allen song, written in the 70s. It's a very powerful song and Aussies love it. Peter Allen wrote some wonderful songs about Australia, another one is Tenterfield Sadler, which is about his grandfather and father who came from Tenterfield, in NSW. You should have a listen.
