- The skillful, safe, effective and efficient handling of cows based on understanding cattle’s natural behavior is referred to as stockmanship. Stockmanship uses the key characteristics of a cow’s natural behavior in order to handle the animal in a low stress environment. This program tries to illustrate why cows do what they do and how they perceive the world. Better stockmanship skills results in moving cattle more effectively and more calmly around the farm.
Very helpful video to understand how does cow feel when we go close to her. It would definitely make the job easy for cow handlers...
The point of balance discussion at the 17-minute mark was very useful for moving late-term sows also.

What happens to the calf at birth?
At birth calves are separated from the cow, then the colostrum is milked from the cow and fed to the calf, most dairies will feed the colostrum to the calf for at least 2 feedings, the more colostrum the calf gets withing the first few hours of birth the better for the calfs health, then the calf is put into a hut and fed cows milk until weaning, very well taken care of. Bull calves are treated just the same as heifer calves. They are taken care of better than the cow can do.
The calf is separated from the mother who is now considered fresh after giving birth, the fresh mother is then take to get a shot to help drop there milk and push out left over afterbirth
