The plan to reduce the cost of housing should involve BUILDING MORE HOUSES/DUPLEXES/TOWNHOMES/APARTMENTS. If you give away that "free" money all you do is drive the cost of housing up even further, the same houses everyone is competing for already.

When I bought my house in the late 70's, (in an area highly sought after now), I paid $275/month on a total price of $44,000 (1 acre with a view). Everyone scolded me and said rents would be low forever because of overbuilding. They said it would be the single worst mistake of my life! I followed my instincts and 45 years later i am still sitting here in my dream home , very happy indeed.

The sale price for a home is ridiculous enough. Then, if you calculate the payoff cost for that home you see that you’re buying it for 2 and a half times what the list price is, without calculating any taxes on the property. It’s insanity.

Generally speaking, prices never come down once they go up. UNLESS the market is allowed to course correct. Of course, the prices are going to stay inflated if the root causes of their inflation remain, but if they are removed, prices will follow the laws of supply & demand.
If a house in AZ now costs $500K but building material prices were to drop, regulations are relaxed & a builder can afford to make the same house for $120K & still make a profit, he will.
Yes it can come back down again, uts called a crash. In 2008 we suffered a hit that was quite compared to the great depression - in FL the homes were then selling again 89k+. In 2012 a home from ground up in a nice size lot less than .25acre $150-160k

Kari Lake is indeed correct but, consider that existing homeowners are quite happy that their home is now worth significantly more than it was a couple of years ago. Those folks will be considerably easier to sway based on the massive increase in the cost of putting food on the table, buying gas and, buying a new car or truck. That is something that's important for EVERYONE.

My property taxes in Ga gwinnett co were in 2020 $1600. For 2024 I just got a note about my new taxes = $2930. In 4 years increase almost 100%. Don’t tell me my property can be sold for the price the Co is doing the appraisal!!

My house payment was somewhere around $450 a month.
