I have given it thought before. I am with you, Neville and person in the video. 'Love you' is more casual and general. 'I love you' is more deliberate and makes for more pointed communication. It better conveys romance, intimacy, conviction and feeling.

Love is not a feeling it's what you do. The Bible defines love for us ...1 Corinthians 13:4-7. If Love doesn't have those characteristics it is something else not love.

'I love you' can be generic as well. I have a problem with the phrase 'I love you' because those same person who say that are the same person that hurt you. If the person use that phrase it must be backed by the action. It can be selfish as well as ' I love you' is depended on how the is feeling at the time. Most of the time it's all about the person saying it rather than the other.
Sometimes the use of the phrase is not genuine but to deceive. So action is better for me than saying the phrase.
I believe the best thing to do is to tell the person what he/ she means to you, show appreciation and their significance and being grateful and thankful.
Well it's all about ones perspective. As for me the tone is more important than the words so whether the I is used or not I still want the genuine tone and then after all is said the treatment must be able to compliment the words.
