Exploring An Old Abandoned Insane Asylum In London, Ontario

Back in 1870, the London Asylum for the Insane opened its doors. This was monumental for North America - people were finally focusing on creating specialized institutions for the mentally ill. The first superintendent of the asylum, Dr. Henry Landon, believed that patients could be soothed by routine work habits and nutritious meals. He attempted to create a “normal life” for his patients in order to bring them down to earth and ease their worries, whatever they may be.
Landon’s work was put to the test, as the asylum immediately filled its 500 patient beds. The facility grew over time and housed nearly 900 patients near the end of the 1800s.
As time went on, the medical understanding of mental illness continued to grow and shift. The asylum was renamed to ‘The Ontario Hospital London’ in 1932. The second superintendent, Dr. Richard Bucke, brought new ideas to the asylum. He believed in the idea of work therapy, ultimately giving the patients physical jobs as a form of treatment. He also normalized the questionable practice of the lobotomy, believing some patients to require brain surgery & modification at his hand. No wonder so many of the patients were unhappy.
Years went by, and the time between 1960 and 1990 brought new practices, therapies and beliefs towards mental health. The old facility was demolished and construction began, bringing what’s now known as ‘St. Joseph’s Health Care London’ to life.
The transformation of The London Asylum for the Insane is incredible. So many lives have been affected by this institution - for better and for worse. It was absolutely amazing to explore the premises and learn about the events that took place so close to my home. Thank you for watching and supporting my journey! - Розваги
Wow I remember that place. My first summer job in my late teens was working in that place as a janitor on the housekeeping staff. Summer of 88 and 89. It’s so strange seeing it like that. It used to be bustling with activity. But, there’s a few horror stories I could tell about that place too.
Oh... they used to nick-name the place “The Highbury Hilton”. LOL

I was a patient there in 1967. I was only 16 and was scared to death. They did so many tests every week on me. I was ill and didnt comprehend what was going on.

Yes I made the news and all I got was a warning then I made the Hamilton spectator for my video of century manor and nothing happened!

I've heard male screams there, but it was at the building with the gymnasium, and it was coming from the basement. Creepiest thing I ever heard!

Probably somebody pizzed at losing money on the pool tables down there. Used to be a tennis court right outside the gym building.

If you’ve ever walked in there before, there’s a circle of candles in a spray-painted, Satan star in the floor in the candles, are surrounding it, with some kind of tin tray filled with blood

Should use breathing masks for these old buildings, alot of the time there is mold or asbestos and I know for a fact this building is boarded up because there are endangered birds nesting inside

It looks a lot different inside there now. I was in there 2 weeks ago and most of that stuff is gone. Even the floors

My mother used to work at the London Psychiatric Hospitals as a Doctor in the late 1970' in the newer building off Highbury avenue. I never knew about these buildings until Google maps revealed them to me through the magic of the internet. Such beautiful buildings and just sitting empty. There is another Psych hospital that was converted to a youth detention center in Goderich and it's closed as well now.

Did you know that When my mother worked at the Goderich psychiatric hospital they used to do vocational training as part of the therapy programs? They made furniture and stuffed animals and clothing as well as some artistic meta; working and ceramics/ It was felt that teaching people new skills helps their brain to overcome their illness by developing new pathways. It also gave people an employable skill when they returned home. Back then Clients remained resident for much longer periods of time and therapy was less drug-based.
The less drugs the better! I love how they taught them skills.

I check up on this place once a week it’s my sanctuary. My dad and my brother were both admitted here and then died shortly after due to health complications. It’s really weird when you see random people who used to be admitted their scrolling the compound.

The Guy that was in the LPH at 3:36 in this video name is Robert Macmillan (on FB) , I know this b/c I punched him out for acting Goofy 3 years ago . He was there Stealing Copper out of the walls of the building and needs to be in jail , for breaking into other building in London doing the same thing. I stopped the video at 3:36 to write this comment ,I wonder who else is in there w/ him.

This shits wild. I live near here and just went a couple weeks ago, was too worried about getting caught to go inside though so it's cool to see what's in there. Got more balls than I do that's for sure 😂

We were there for 4 weeks boarding those windows n doors n b4 that we boarded the other buildings n we went through that whole building including the tunnel the basement is pretty sketchy there was some old black n white photos on the wall n they were creepy as hell n yes there is a morgue there it’s not very big but it’s has a big fridge obviously lol we closed the windows up in 2015 I’ll try n put some photos up of those old black n white photos, it was fun working there loved it it was a nice project for sure oh and we were there working that place was spotless it looked like they just left the day b4 was clean it’s looks like crap now

i was a patient there in the 90s that place was always creepy. this video gave me chills just to see that flooring and stuff again makes me rememeber all the nights being there....could never sleep

I have been to this location a few times. There's one spot in the stairwell on the 2nd floor. Whoever walked thru it first whenever we went. We also heard random girl screams
At 2:16 the building he is at is a church. Me and my friend removed the boards to get in. When we first went in we heard people walking on the second floor. When we got up there we heard walking on the first floor. Kept flip flopping

Right beside Fanshawe College in London no further than a 10 minute drive from Fanshaw
I lived there for a year when I was a teen (15)
I should have been put on the teen ward (T2 and P2) but I wasn't.
I was put on the worst ward of all. H2, behavior modification unit.
Locked all the time, no coming and going like T2.
It was hell.
I was moved to H1 a few times, ran away, was caught, and brought
back and slammed right back to H2.
The nurses were mean and the shrinks didn't care about you.
The only nice people there was my social worker and the school teachers, who
I cried to a few times.
There was a school there, and because I was only 15 years old I
had to go to school. I looked forward to it as it got me off the ward.
At 6 pm every night we also went downstairs to the canteen, for pop and
snacks and we could play pool, listen to music etc...
There were dances and events in the rec hall. (recreation hall) I liked those too, and church every Sunday
at the little church there, The Chapel Of Hope. They also held AA meetings there.
Any excuse to get off the ward I took advantage of.
Me and my bestie there, who was also 15 and put there, used to smoke
weed on the grounds. That was when we were on H1. (a step up from H2 and more freedom)
We played on a Quiji board a few times. That was a big mistake and
I never went near one again.
My first night there I shared a room with a real insane woman named Mavis. She was in her 80's. She killed a nurse
sometime in the 50's, All night long she kept saying to me I'll kill you, you
son of a bitch. They kept me with her for about a week before moving me away from her.
I was on the verge of going insane.
There was lots of abuse of patients there. I wrote a letter to the Ombudsman that my teachers helped me with
and they mailed it for me as I was not allowed out!
A few weeks later The Ombudsman came to see me!
They did a complete investigation talking to both patients and staff. They recorded it all.
A few years later the good old Highbury Hilton (as we called it) ended up with an Ombudsman office there!
I started the whole thing.
I have lots to tell. I could write a book.
By the way, that woman screaming in your video is totally unreal, and you actually caught it on your cell phone. I played it back several times. You didn't think to go and check it out after you heard it? Knock on the boarded up window or something? I can’t believe the way you were treated but I’m glad you made change there annie is fine that’s the only explore she has ever been on with me. Intersting been there many times as an out patient and until I see it for myself of here anything not normal be the only way for me to believe interesting tho )

"Ya look at the wall must have been something trippy", "this is crazy" you need to go to Fanshawe and properly learn how to dialogue over video or at least edit this thing and do some research beforehand. It comes across as a Hardy Boys or Bobbsey Twins slacker day at the abandoned institution. think of what it could be? find the names of people who were there, do some history on the place,

Fantastic job guys. Way to post video evidence of yourselves committing a serious crime, and publicly revealing where the point of entry is. Videos like these are what add controversy to the urbex community, and ruin it for everyone else.
