It's odd. I'm apparently an outlier, I've NEVER looked at recommendations and go straight to my subscriptions. And I don't assume there's nothing new there, I check my top channels (including this one) daily or every other day, to see if there's something new.
Waiting for UA-cam to spoon-feed you stuff and not even checking to see if there's anything, or looking through the back catalog of your favorite channels, seems so weird and ... passive.
I go straight to my subscription tab and sift through what's new. I ignore the recommended stuff to the point that I no longer even notice it. No algorithm is going to run my life, UA-cam!!!

@@All_Hail_Chael I think you may have had other interests and stopped watching his content for a while. That's when the recommendation shifted to the other new contents that you've been viewing (the rabbit hole) and this channel stop being recommended. Only when you started seeing his videos again that UA-cam knows that you're still interested in the content and putting them back in the recommended list.
If you really like this channel's content and want to keep viewing, make sure to put the bell notification to all and check the bell every day and don't let it stack up. I believe some time ago, UA-cam changed the notification scheme and notification stopped until you renew it. Might want to recheck that if you're already did turn it on before.
@@All_Hail_Chael youtube algorithm is so deeply based on copying your viewing history that the only thing it can do is recommend videos with same word patterns in the title, or in the video description. So if you stop watching even for like a 10-hour (viewing) period, and aren't subscribed which is your own fault of course, and your history gets backed up with all different types of videos the algorithm will just think you're no longer interested in Shad.
This channel must live on. The content gets better with every video. Thank you for all of your videos and I pray that your channel stays popular.

Honestly, using Shadlands as a supercut channel was a great idea and can funnel more people to the main channel even if the algorithm is not on your side currently

I'm thinking a higher ranking demon of some kind.
I guess the easiest things active subscribers can do to help is don't rely on the recommended feed, but manually check your subscription feed every so often. I know Shad said something like that towards the end, but it bears repeating.
Not just using it every now and again but always.
Stop letting UA-cam tell you what to watch when you've already told them what you want to watch.
You have been part of my journey into accurate historical martial arts from the beginning and I'm thankful for it.

UA-cam is definitely recommending smaller channels and lower view videos (got suggested a 44view video the other day). As I said on your previous, and numerous people seemed to agree, the algorithm changes made it EXTREMELY reactive to the users recent views/searches.
I expect that Shadlands is getting recommendations because it's a new channel and you will see a decay over time effect.
Can confirm that I hadn't seen the castle videos until the life in medieval castle, though I took a break from your videos.

I love shadiversity I always have been a huge medieval nerd. When I was younger I always wanted to be a blacksmith. But this channel is the most entertaining yet educational channel I've seen. Also pssst get shadow of the conquerer it's great.

Now If I could only combine my old homes forge with my current homes hammers and anvil I will I start working 4-10 days so maybe I'll get around to it this summer. I can safely say that this is happening to most content creators on the platform. Maybe not all, but most. Since January my impressions dropped significantly (most videos reached 3+ million impressions, and now they cant even reach 700K) but my like to view ratio, comments, CTR and VIEWER RETENTION all skyrocketed. So, with that in mind, the videos should be shown to more people, but they are not. So yeah, UA-cam changed something. But well, it is what it is. Stay strong my friend.

Shad took a lot of shade posting that vid. It was a brave move, glad it worked. One content producer accuses Shad of panhandling, as he is doing a live stream reading Superchats, and agreeing with Shads findings. I keep thinking Shad should do live streams, but considering the time zone he'd probably need to do it in Chinese ☹.

I permanently closed my watch history, and only watch videos from my subscriptions tab (I also subscribed to Shadiversity and the Shadlands). @@nuno9592 A lot of my recs are just garbage with a GPT script, stable diffusion picture and synthetic voiceover. It's harder to find real vids to watch right now.
the recommendation system shows you videos based on your viewing history, if you what videos you subscribed to use the subscriptions tab.

I've gotten quite a few comments on my channel of people saying things like "why did UA-cam show me this? I hate this type of content!" etc, etc. But at the same time, some of my most dedicated subscribers have told me they only found my content because UA-cam randomly recommended it. Granted, I'm nowhere near the size of Shadiversity (around 550 subs as of writing this) so take this for whatever it's worth, but what Shad's saying still rings very true for me.
I checked out your channel. The videos are really good at wide ranging in topic. I think you'll blow up tbh if you hit on the right topic and milk it for all its worth. Or stick with a specific style of video structure and type.
The dumbest thing there is, cause they posted a comment on your video... the algorithm counts that as engagement, so they are going to get more recommendations for that content. Hahaha That is how the rabbit hole becomes a sink hole
Use the push-pull method. Push away CNN and similar ilk by clicking “…” and chose “Do not recommend channel”. The pull-method is subscribing to channels you like. If more people use this method, it’ll be clear to the algorithm what people want to see.
I've had the same experience recently. I think UA-cam is trying to completely take away the power from creators. First by making subscribers matter even less than they did, second by locking views to only subscribers on channels that are older or bigger, and third by only allowing and even encouraging big views sporadically on both large and small channels. Giving a big hit every so many videos regardless of subscriber count ensures that views are spread out among everyone, regardless of quality or time spent earning loyal subs. (I've seen channels with 5 to 10 videos in my niche suddenly get a video with a million views, repeatedly over the last few months.) So what you'll end up with is a lot of channels that don't have enough views to make a living, or have a large group of loyal followers who can get annoyed at UA-cam on their behalf. Instead each of those will have a few big videos that UA-cam can monetize without all that "unnecessary" creator/sub relationship. Or they'll let them be big for a few months before cycling to the next channel, who is probably just recycling that first channels content anyways and then the machine just keeps going like that. They're interested in a bunch of free labor essentially, with less risks that come with large creators. Got to keep the advertisers happy! Now they have "featured" shows too so they can pick the content even more. My wife says they want to be a television network where people make them shows for free. For me I'm just looking at this like a hobby now. It's been full time for 7 years but it's too unstable for me to feel comfortable with that now. We'll see how things go, I don't see this going well for them over time. (Btw I have no idea what controversy he's talking about so please don't get mad at me, I'm completely in the dark on that and just wanted to leave a comment about this particular topic.)
Very good points raised here. UA-cam made a change a year or so ago, monetizing all videos even on unmonetized channels, giving the creators of those channels no cut of the ad revenue. This might very well explain the recent push of very low viewed videos and channels to people who don't watch that content, because if those channels are unmonetized, UA-cam gets 100% of the revenue.

I'm a concept designer and thanks to your videos several years ago now I design castles with proper MACHIICOLATIONNNNNNS.
These videos just started showing up in my recommendations and I have binged like 10 of them in the last few days. Great stuff
One thing I've noticed is that UA-cam rarely recommends video that I haven't watched. I didn't know about about any upload from this channel since mid January unless I've manually went on the channel page. But I have been recommended hundreds of Shadiversity videos I have seen.
I noticed Shadiversity was popping up MUCH more often in my recommendations after that video, and I've also made a point of watching any and every Shadiversity video that shows up in my feed, new or old.
I can't afford to do much to support you beyond giving you my views and my likes, but by God will I do what I can to help.
if you click on the subscriptions tab just below the home tab that will just show every video from creators you are subbed to.
I'm impressed that you are taking your fate in your own hands as much as you are able by trying a variety of new strategies, but also props for you having the humility to ask for help too, for the sake of your family and employees.
love your content and it made me realise that when i open YT I now go straight to my 'subscriptions' and not rely on the default 'recommended' feed and it was eye opening to see how much content i was missing - unless i was specifically looking for that channel.

After I saw the video about the difficulties I started getting A LOT of recommendations for Shadiversity videos. Been watching a lot of old stuff that I seemed to have missed when it came out.
Shad video's have not even shown up in my subscriptions list for months, this is one of maybe 3 that has shown up this year. The new channel on the other hand has been recommended quite a few times even before I subscribed to it.
I absolutely love the stuff you make. Keep it up man
