  • Manhattan Girls Chorus is delighted to announce the world premiere of Daniel E. Gawthrop's creation “When the Night Is Gone”, made possible by the tireless hard work and dedication of our nearly 50 beautiful young women. In this sublime work by Daniel, the words of Dorothy Tait (full lyrics follow) remind us that even while darkness may at times haunt our lives, beauty continues to thrive and vows life’s vivid colors shall be revealed anew. This is a timely and timeless message. The girls embraced this transcendent experience with the hope that others might fully sense its power.
Please allow me to share a few thoughts about my dear friend, Daniel. I have been in awe of his genius for decades and never imagined that one day I would have the privilege of working with him and more importantly, benefit from his wisdom and perspective. He is a shining light with a pure and rare humility who focuses his gifts on others without the slightest hint of ego. He is masterful in his selection of text and ability to craft amazingly beautiful music. His musical tapestry is woven with vibrant colors, yet he selflessly provides space for his performing artists to also weave their unique colors and vision into the composition. Daniel recognizes that fully authentic music has a profound ability to meld our senses and connect our souls. It reflects the life experiences of all the artists involved: the lyricist, the composer, the conductor and, most importantly, the singers who send it forth universally as a singular and individual experience for all.
We are honored and humbled that Daniel has entrusted us with the introduction of this stunningly beautiful creation.
Special thanks to our videographer, Beka Virtue, for his exceptional creative genius, and to the following members of the Chorus featured in this video (in order of appearance): Melody Munitz, Emmy Cai, Chloe Roe, Bria Jourdain, Adriana Dipple, and Taylor Weinstein.
Manhattan Girls Chorus (www.manhattangirlschorus.org) is a nurturing community of approximately fifty young women. The Chorus relies on generous contributions to support our mission. Donations may be made through the Support page on our website.

    Be not afraid, dear love, of this the night;
All nights have ending, every dawn is sure.
Think not that with one snuffing of the light
    Day dies forever.
    Worlds and suns endure.
Because your eyes can see no color
where the dark has dimmed the garden into gray,
    are roses duller,
or the scarlet flare of wind-blown poppies cooler than by day?
Are roses duller than by day?
The world is all unchanged and will again gleam golden to the sun.
Nor will these hours when darkness veils all color, and your pain gathers-
the incandescence of white flowers, be all ungrateful to remember
    when the night is gone
    and the day relumed again.
This video was filmed in Central Park and at the Irish Hunger Memorial in Battery Park City Park.
