  • One of the most common complaints about frugal living that I hear is that frugality requires too much deprivation. Today I want to talk about why I think that's not the case and what I think is required to stick to frugal living for life. Let me know what you think in the comments!

7:55 This sounds like a very yummy breakfast 😊
I agree that refusing to habituate ourselves to regular treats makes us enjoy the occasional treats more.

Went out of town for a day trip with my best friend this past weekend. I was shocked at how much food was every place we went. Reason I was shocked is because I work from home, and never eat out.

You’re right, it can be quite a shock when you’re used to saving so much on food costs by cooking yourself. Really makes you think twice and save those experiences for special occasions!

Frugality is at it's core, about self control. Can you be self controlled enough to forgo something that you ultimately do not need or save to be able to afford it? Consumer culture and by extension, consumer credit, is the main issue impacting self control in America and to an extent over here in Europe. It really do believe it is all about self control and a lack thereof. Humans have always gravitated to shortcuts, consumer credit is the ultimate shortcut in my opinion. Sprinkle in a little dose of glitter and fomo for the latest slab of sand and lithium and control is no more.
So to the people who think frugality is like deprivation, what they are really saying is, I want but can't have the nice thing now so I won't try it.
I do wonder, has it ever been different?
Do keep up the videos though, you got me to log into UA-cam and comment and I actively try to stay away from Google!

Most advertisement is manipulation. It can alter your willpower by redirecting it to the product. You think you consent to buy or use the product but you are made to consent to buy or use the product. Self control means for me being aware of this.

Thank you so much for the comment! Agreed that consumer culture and easy credit has decimated self control worldwide. I’ve got a Discord sever going live tonight so would love to hear from you in there! Check out my latest video coming out tonight for the link 👍

One key is never paying more than needed for stuff and separate wants from needs. I follow the 75/15/10 rule: 75% for bills and living expenses, 15% for investing, and 10% for holidays/savings. People never have money because they work only to spend it all. I live a pretty damn good life with 75% of my paycheck.

A good example is a bread maker I recently bought.
My family decided to go whole hog into making our own bread. We saved up for the Zojirushi BB-CEC20 (if you’ve looked at bread makers, you know this is the Cadillac of bread makers).
We were blessed and a friend bought it for us, which was $400. Would this be a frugal purchase?
Well, 50 loaves in and it runs like it did out of the box. It’s stupid easy to clean and it literally does EVERYTHING in the bread making process - you just throw in your ingredients and it will knead, rise, and bake. Literally set and forget.
Cut to a friend who bought a $100 bread maker a bit before we got ours. His has broken twice (needing to be replaced) and requires you to pull the dough to rise it, and cleaning is a nightmare.
Hes about 16 loaves and $300 in at this point, plus plenty of time.
    Buy once, cry once.

I love that! Sometimes you’ve got to outlay quite a bit of cash at the start for something that’ll pay off big time over the long-term. And it’s literally feeding you, so you can’t argue with a purchase like that!

Greed is the problem. Being smart about the things you buy is the key to living well and not giving a darn about what other people have or think. One example, I use Visible+ by verizon. Most people buy an iPhone and use Verizon. I bought a motorola one 5g UW phone. I also use that as my internet so I don't pay the cable company that everyone else does.

I think being frugal but investing in items of quality is also important from an environmental perspective. Less junk ends up in a landfill and that alone is a huge driving factor for me when I make purchases.

100%. So much stuff nowadays is destined for the dump - it’s important to buy quality items and make them last 👍
