I've been meaning to ask this for a while, but does anyone know if the neutrino rush described in the Because Science Video about the sun going supernova would leave radiation on the planet and render it uninhabitable (ignoring the giant explosion that follows it) or would it *simply* kill everything alive but not harm the planet or anything on it? *Not really simple
I think it would be uninhabitable. There are things in the ground that run the nitrogen cycle - a very important cycle - that would get destroyed by the energy from it. The atmosphere would also be destroyed.

Quite surprised that I missed this. Excellent video, it always boggles my mind just how much energy the sun represents. The numbers are just kinda overwhelming.
Props to Smash Bros for reducing the attack time even more and still making it look bad ass. Fun fact: You cannot die from this attack in the original worldwide release game. It's programmed to only take 15/16th of the players party current health.
i think the reason the supernova didn't like wipe them out of existence is because the attack was an illusion so powerful that it actually did a portion of damage to Cloud and the others. Thats My Theory On It
Re: the blitzball question at the end: I think the game, or at least the deep lore, explains how it works! The pyreflies, the little beacons of light that come off of dead monsters and congeal into Aeons, aren't actually beings at all but a natural form of energy, not unlike FFVII's Mako. The energy can, like mako, crystalize into spheres, but also can be used to manipulate other matter into spherical shapes. These forces are used to turn water into a sphere for blitzball; however, it has a necessary side effect for the sport in that it makes the water breathable to humans, akin to how there are experimental liquids that have been in development to allow humans to breathe despite liquid form (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_breathing). Certain liquids, like perfluorocarbons, have very high capacities for saturation by breathable gases, with some even being better than blood is for keeping those gases in. These fluids can act as a medium for those elements in the lungs, which is being studied for all sorts of projects like medical ventilation and deepwater diving (the first time I heard about this was on the old show "Seven Days," where the time travelling hero used a similar substance in a flight suit to minimize the risks of time travelling back to a submerged submarine - since his craft would land him in the ocean and under pressure, he needed a method of breathing that wasn't gaseous to aid with balancing to the pressure). It's thus possible that the process of making the water spherical is also altering the water, adding some substance to it that makes the liquid compatible with the lungs of the players. Thus, they wouldn't have to hold their breaths at all. It's been forever since I played, so I don't recall if players are able to speak in the blitzball field, but they certainly would be able to breathe if the chemistry was altered. Of course, we may not need that thorough an explanation for how Spiran humans can hold their breath that long. Real world freedivers can hold their breath for up to 10 minutes. Given how much of Spira's land is basically made up of small islands, anyone growing up in the more coastal regions (which is most of the people outside of the Al Bhed, and even then only those who reside in the desert), many of the natives would be used to swimming on a regular basis, and probably grew up practicing breath control techniques on a more regular basis as such. This could explain why Yuna, otherwise untrained in blitzball, could share a tender moment under the surface with Tidus without worrying about air (though, that cave was full of free floating pyreflies as well, and as a summoner she is exposed to them a lot more, so maybe they were helping a bit). But, if you want to be as athletic as a blitzer for extended lengths the breathable liquid probably would be a huge help.

Great video Kyle!!! I love the math and special effects. Can you make the background music and special effects a little bit louder though? I lovve to hear your signature music everytime I watch your vids.
The funniest thing about Super Nova is that it's a Gravity-element attack, which means it only ever does a fraction (15/16ths) of your health and can never actually kill your party, even if you are severely underleveled for the fight.
9:01 with your thrusters in full burn like that and your package floating with no additional acceleration itself… you’d just fly right past your package.
@@ashtonhoward5582 Ok, thanks! I was designing a sci-fi civilization and was wondering whether a neutrino weapon could be effective at killing all of the people on a planet but leaving it inhabitable. Thanks a lot though!
@@kiranm8569 I haven't looked deep into it. But I think it could potentially act like a sterilization. An example that I can think of is brewing beer. You want to completely sterilize your equipment so that you can seed it with the organisms that you want in there.
I appreciate the little footnote during the credit roll at the end. Not specifically the topic, but the idea of dropping little side facts that don't really fit into the rest of the video instead of just dancing for a second and then stepping off screen. I'd prefer literally anything over that, though.
I love how there are shadows of your arms but not the table or any item of the table. HAHA +1 to these awesome vids.
"HOW MUCH DAMAGE WOULD IT DO?"
All of it Kyle... all of the damage
What the energy output of photosynthetsis and how much "green stuff" would it take to power a city?
Quite surprised that I missed this. Excellent video, it always boggles my mind just how much energy the sun represents. The numbers are just kinda overwhelming.
Props to Smash Bros for reducing the attack time even more and still making it look bad ass.
Fun fact: You cannot die from this attack in the original worldwide release game. It's programmed to only take 15/16th of the players party current health.
I always thought of it as a simulation, like he's trying to send them to a dimension where that supernova happened.
We need somebody, a hero, who can make a groovy music background like in the past
i think the reason the supernova didn't like wipe them out of existence is because the attack was an illusion so powerful that it actually did a portion of damage to Cloud and the others.
God I love this community.
This type of in depth analysis of a 'small' detail from a series like this is exactly why.

All that text when it was actually stated in game how people do it. lol. But that isn't why I'm responding. Cloud and Yuna? wut?
@@vastet2194 Doh, thanks, corrected. As I was writing, @TulokTheBarbrarian posted his How to Build Cloud Video and I got my blonde, spikey-hair, sword-wielding protagonists with a sphere-collecting addiction mixed up.

I'm so glad that Kyle Hill is not stopping his video posts during this quarantine. THANK YOU, KYLE
I always found it weird that it wasn't set on Earth, yet was surrounded by the same solar system as us
The real question is how hes able to destroy the same planets over and over again and have them come back in the same fight, just to make us suffer from an obnoxiously long attack.
Kyle: "I'm not a super villain."
Immediately says "Splody splody"
Me: ...k.
I thought I'd seen all your videos and now you cross over into my favourite game. What a treat
I haven't started the video yet but I think if you were hit with a supernova you wouldn't feel very good unfortunately
We're fighting Sephiroth because he's trying to kill everyone with a meteor, and then he goes and pulls this OD move out.
This video has big "I cut my teeth in the ps2 era" energy.
Ffvii was ps not 2
Great video Kyle just curious could you please do a video about the science of Skyrim specifically if shouting/sound waves could actually do some damage in real life like the shouts do in game, also the science of how to climb sheer cliffs/mountains
The public wants to know!
WHICH ff game is your favorite?
Everyone knows FFVI was the best pfft
FF14 is what I would like to say but I strongly suspected it's 8
My bet is on FFX
FF X. or FF4&5
6 is still my fav
Kyle you mad lad!
The second you talked about the long cutscene I went MGS joke please? And you delivered my sir. I don't know what happened with needing the new channel but whatever it was I'm here to support you sir. Your doing god's work super nerd.
"Dead from the nutrinos"
Flashbacks.
I've had so many questions about the depiction of Supernova. Like how large/fast would a solid object have to be to not only escape vaporization approaching the Sun, but also enough to make it erupt into destabilization? How large would the Sun's explosion be? Could it actually reach our orbit?

So... What is your favorite Final Fantasy @Kyle Hill?
Great episode, love your content!
Even sepiroth needs to do some of this math in the beginning of the cutscene
Kyle, the question that really matters is, what's your favorite game in the series? The people must know.
I'm guessing he was about to say 9. The most common answer to that question is 7 or 9.

Great video Kyle!!! I love the math and special effects. Can you make the background music and special effects a little bit louder though? I lovve to hear your signature music everytime I watch your vids.
Anyone else notice when kyle releases a video so does "because science" coincident? I think not!
I know BS always released on Thursday. However, beyond that, I find timing a bit suspect. Perhaps they do have some arrangement though
I mean...Kyle's been releasing videos on the same schedule for ages now. Makes sense he'd stick to that same schedule after he left BS.
Gary Palmer how would I know if BS released a video? I unsubscribed and blocked them for their mistreatment of our blonde god...
@NICHOLAS WHITE Kyle hints that he left BS due to some bs.
@@Dr_Andracca ironic
The funniest thing about Super Nova is that it's a Gravity-element attack, which means it only ever does a fraction (15/16ths) of your health and can never actually kill your party, even if you are severely underleveled for the fight.
Kyle: "I'm not a super villian!!!"
Me: Only Evil Kyle will say something like that lol.
9:01 with your thrusters in full burn like that and your package floating with no additional acceleration itself… you’d just fly right past your package.
Your thrusters should have been firing in the opposite direction to slow your total velocity to match the packages static velocity for proper intercept.
One Winged Angel, arguably the best ff7 song. Sets such an epic precedent for the end scene.
good song but no where near the best
pretty much the best ff song period.
@Tormantor what song is your favorite?
Actually while I’m asking, @Kyle Hill what FF7 song song is your favorite?

Based on what I've gathered, a supernova detonating that close to our planet will not only do a lot of damage, but also cause frog, mini and confusion status

Kyle's good at physics, but is he good at genetics?
I want to know what it takes to mutate our chickens into Ridable Chocobos.
I would imaginen we just cross a chicken with an ostrich and a horse (because ostriches are not as docile).
Don't bother with chickens or Ostriches your not going to get the results you want. Use Emus and or Cassowaries then bread for height strength and speed, or genetic modification to save you a couple hundred years of selective breeding. Might not be very docile but might make for a good fighting mount.
@@Franky_Sthein You don't just cross a mammal with a bird, silly. We want Chocobos, not Homunculi.
@@nyan2317 The horse is just in because I know horses can be trained.
Assuming it is a trait that is defined by there genes.

Yeees, I'm so psyched that I found your channel. Love your work mane. It's not a theoretical science day without ya 😁👌.
Missed 2 very important facts here. First when the attack is initiated you are teleported to an alternate dimension and second it isn't the explosion of the sun that is used to deal the damage but the sun its self as sephiroths meteor propels the sun into moving towards the remaining planets and your party
