★About Professor Herp★
I started getting into the reptile hobby in February of 2018. My first reptile was my Bearded Dragon - Maxine Pegasus (creator of duel monsters btw). Since then, I have added five Yellow Ackie Monitors (Asus, Dell, LG, and two unnamed babies), a Chacoan Black and White Tegu (Frappuccino), a Crested Gecko (Destin), and a Russian Tortoise (Tortellini). I also have a dog named Thrall (yes, from World of Warcraft) who is a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix - aka a Chiweenie.
My goal with this channel is to share my knowledge, experience and journey with other reptile/animal enthusiasts and become a better caretaker because of it. Hopefully I can learn a lot from the community through these videos.

I’m getting my friend on Saturday. This video was just a very simplified version of all the research I’ve done thus far. Thanks for the info!
Glad it was helpful!
I’m 15 and I’ve just bought a a Russian tort that’s a baby so hopefully I’ll outlive him. I bought him because my grandma recently passed and she always loved her last tortoise, speedy and ik she would like another. I named him after a pony she used to have, dandy
im about to be 15 and im planning on getting a russian tort
I’m 13 and I’m about to get a Russian tort and I’m gonna name it after my late grandpa
wait wasn't that the lady that walked her tortoise speedy
I want updates.
Heya guys I’m 17 now and dandy is doing great hes had no issues and he loves eating the dandy lions in the garden on hot days. He’s about to turn 3 and he’s huge compared to when I got him ahah.
Thanks! I bonded with one at a pet store recently and I think I’ll be getting one soon
awesome!
Ok THANKS will tune IN! =D
This guy is so underrated!!!
Aw shucks!
Me chilling with my Herman tortoise be looking like 👀
I live in an apartment with no yard. The best kind of tortoise for me is stuffed lone
I was thinking of naming mine tortellini too!!! Maybe I should think up a new name don't wanna steal your idea 😅
Nah I am sure I was not the first to use the name haha! Feel free to use it!
i have 2 herman torotises and my parents decided to give me a russian one thanks for the information
Tortoises and there owners be having a competition to see who lives longer
Hi just wondering if you have any advice on how to help a Russian tortoise in getting bigger (essentially kinda fattening them up) just my tortoise was sick when I first got her and had a parasite for a bit so she’s didn’t grow for a while and then didn’t eat for ages and couldn’t figure out for why but found it’s cause she wasn’t comfortable in the enclosure with my other tort that’s her age so I separated them and she has been eaten she’s all good now but just a bit small for her age so I’m trying to help her grow bigger and just wondering if you have any tips for this?
More food more often. Nutritionally rich food. If the tort is already adult she may never catch up though. The growing years are vital for proper development. Doesn't mean she can't live a healthy, good life though! Just may be a tad smaller than average. I only would be concerned about breeding in that case.
@@ProfessorHerp thank you for the advice! I’m trying that at the moment I’m feeding her more and nutritional food and she has started to gain more weight and is starting to round out upwards like a tortoise shell if you get me, she’s not an adult yet she’s only 1 and about a half currently that’s why I’m trying to make sure she (I know she’s too young to sex just think she’s a girl so refer to her as that) gains more weight to keep up now,I’m not too worried about breeding cause won’t really be breeding them as they get older, if she’s only 1 and a half and she gains more weight do you think she’ll be okay and might not have permanent effects? And might grow like an average tortoise (I know she might be a little smaller) just from your experience
Thank you very much for all your help!
@@lauren-suzannefagan2019 Honestly cant say. I would take her to a reputable exotic vet right before trying to breed for a solid answer on that!
Is a 50 gallon container fine for an adult russian tort?
Hi there, do you know where they might sell some?
No I do not really follow many Russian Tortoise breeders :/
Don’t get one from the pet store! You don’t know where they come from and they can get very sick. Find a reputable breeder or try to adopt even better. You can contact Kenan from Kamp Kenan channel here on UA-cam he breeds all sorts of tortoises.
@@stacyrich113 he breeds russians?
I’m thinking on getting a Russian tortoise but I’m researching how to take care of them I already have a red eard slider named pumpkin and it already has like 1 year with me so I want to get another pet.
Sounds similar to me and my wife, she got me a 4 week old red eared slider for Christmas because she knew I loved turtles, we had him for a year and my wife and mother in law fell in love with him instantly. A year later we started talking about also getting a tortoise. We eventually saw a Russian tortoise at our local PetSmart looking really depressed, after seeing him constantly like that for four weeks we bought him. Let me tell you I'm glad we did, the moment we took him out of the store he perked right up. Went from this dropping lump that just stayed in the same spot in his store enclosure for weeks to moving around, checking things out. Then when we brought him home and put him in his new enclosure he poked around, gave it the once over, moved his lining around to how he wanted it and slept for a good 12 hours and then ate his breakfast and just walked around, bathed, climbed up on his den to bask, just acting content in one day. Though my wife was disappointed that he waited for her to leave before eating as she likes watching him and our red eared slider eat
Hi I am planning on getting a Russian tortoise and I have a question, is a 40 gallon tank big enough for the tortoise?
No, not really unless it’s a baby. You’ll want 10+ square feet for an adult, which will probably have to be a custom built. These guys are small, but they are built to wander around a pretty large area. If size is a serious restraint you might want to reconsider.
@@normalhuman78-53 thank you I will get a bigger tank
Yep! What @normalhuman78 said
I’m 12 is hat good or not because I love tortoise and I want to get one
what do you mean?
Hey, a tortoise is a good pet for me as I need a hypoallergenic reptile that doesn't eat insects, but I am trying to work out, will an apartment be enough space for one? Do you happen to know of a good tortoise species that doesn't require a massive enclosure?
All torts, even small ones, need a good amount of size. They roam a lot. Could work in an apartment but may take up a good amount of space!
@@ProfessorHerp sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, thanks!
I think maybe if you have enough time to let them roam around your apartments with supervision that might also help with getting some good exercise.
@@phangirlable yeah that's a good idea, thanks :)
Hi :) I got a Russian tortoise for my 13th birthday this year and he is still quite young
I bought him a see saw wooden type of thing and I'm a bit worried as to if when he is sliding down he might damage the bottom of his shell
Also, right now he has a habit of climbing up things and so he decided to climb up his tall artificial plant that is in his enclosure whilst I was writing this comment and he fell back and landed on his shell. No damage has Been done to his shell and I picked him up ASAP so he was only upside down for about 3 seconds but I really need to know a way to possibly make him stop falling whilst climbing as I don't want anything bad happening to him. Do you have any advice for me because I obviously can't stop him climbing, I just want to prevent him from falling and landing on his shell
Thank you :D
see saw? That's intriguing. I would worry about him flipping over. How is he climbing a plant?! haha
@@ProfessorHerp the see saw isn't tall and we asked a reptile person if it's OK and they said yes
It dosent give off a huge drop at the end because we've made it so that there are stoppers at the end
He has a bridge by his plant so he will go on the 2nd step of the bridge and then will step onto the plant
I have to help him off so yeah
@@hyunjin3ko they're always so smart when its for evil!
can i give them watermelon once a month
Can my Russian tortoise live inside and outside????
Russians are awesome! Our guy Sherman is fun to watch.
Cool!
I have a Russian tortoise can I put another Russian tortoise in the same tank or no
Well, male + male: fighting, Male + female: breeding, female + female: still some bullying but not as bad as males.
i've had a russian for 14 years. He was adult when I got him. He is around 20 years. They like places to dig. I suggest ceramic pots. They don't like to "roam".
Russians WILL brumate. I have fought my dude on this for years. I finally just let him have his light and have his cool down in the tank and that's that.
What’s brumate?
Get them in a enclosure outside during non- winter months !
planning to when I own my property!
Damn bro you're 25? That's rough :( ageing hit you like a bat. Great video tho
thanks...?
LMFAOOOO
Haha 😄 🤣
I grew up with two tortoises living in the garden.. They would hibernate every winter, where Dad would put them into a straw box and literally thaw them out when it got warm enough again.. I just remember this from my childhood.. I'm very likely to keep mine outdoors in the same way, Dad used a guinea pig hutch and they had the roam of the whole garden.
Is it ok to get a tortoise that is in its adulthood so you don’t have to risk it outliving you
definitely! Probably many you can rescue from families who did not know what they were signing up for!
My son got a Russian tortoise and is now in boot camp so me and my grand tortoise; 5 month old Hemingway are trying to do this alone. I have no idea what I’m doing... so thank you for your video! 👍❤️
You can do it!
TORTELLINI 😭
Strawberry's don't have any benefit, but it can be good to VERY OCCASIONALLY give them something like watermelon - especially if you have one like one of mine that doesn't ever drink water. It's a treat for them and can also give them some really good hydration in hot, dry weather. Be extra careful with Horsefield's though (I don't like calling them Russian's because they're not actually from Russia) when it comes to very watery foods though, they come from a very dry area and don't come across fruit or water in general very often. I don't even have a water bowl for mine because one of them is an idiot and will just lay in it for hours which is not good for them, and the other will just poop in it the second I put the water down and then never go in it again until I replace it, so I just soak them frequently to keep them both clean and hydrated. I think an important point you could have made is about humidity, I see a lot of people getting confused about that, either keeping them in a vivarium that is so humid that there is condensation on the glass or in a bone dry enclosure, both of which are terrible and can cause some serious respiratory issues - you need to find a balance, keeping their enclosure dry most of the time but occasionally misting it to emulate the occasional rainfall they would have in their natural environment.
Yes, I agree on the melon! Great for hydration.
@@Slinky_1 I've got mine trained so that he mostly poops during his soaks. Very easy to clean this way.
@TheCousinEddie that sounds great! How did you train him 😮 would love to train mine too
I got one when I was 4, she’s now almost 12 years old and another one I adopted when I was 9 (I’m 15 now) but I’m not sure how old he is. A month or so ago she laid her first fertile egg which I’m so glad about it’s incubating rn and should hatch in around a month in a half
Im planning on getting a Russian tortoise, they’re so cute, so excited.
I would call him comrade
I just found a Russian tortoise. Little guy was just walking across the street and we nearly hit him! He is looking rough so I decided to keep him and I put together a little enclosure for him in a 40 gallon tank. It definitely isn't ideal but hopefully he will be happy in it until I can make him a proper enclosure. So glad I found this video!
That is AWESOME! Hope you and him are doing alright still!
I was watching and looked at the likes and views and was surprised I thought he would have thousands never the less love the great content keep it up! :)
Wow, thank you! I wish!
We just found either a hermann or russian sitting on my drive yesterday, took to the vets and decided to keep it , did a lot of research and watch alot of videos all day , unsure of which breed he or she is
I got two Russian tortoises without knowing anything didn’t know males fight each other it was pretty crazy to see it hunt the small one down
How can i stop my tort from escaping by digging under the fence? If at all...
Is it wrong to get a tortoise with the intention of eventually giving it away? I want a tortoise but I can't keep a tortoise for 50+ years
I would not get one if that is your intention off the bat. Should be a commitment you make to them and only break if you cannot provide the care they require. If you think you won't be able to at some point before even getting him/her, then that may not be the best match.
We hibernate our Russians every year from late December to around late March early April. We keep our house so cold during the winter that they will actually hibernate all on their own without a heat lamp. Just make sure you feed them a bunch in the month before and then during the month you want to hibernate them you cut back the food each time you feed them until they go under. The main reasons to do this are to keep their weight in check (over feeding is a big problem) and if you want to breed them they NEED to hibernate before hand
Thanks for sharing this. Something I really need to deep dive into.
Me and my Russian tortoise always argue who's gonna out live each other lol. Prob him as they have been known to even live 80 years in captivity.
Can you add water on their lettuce on the daily
I keep mine in a 40 gallon but I take him outside and let him roam around the yard every day for a few hrs
I would still upgrade his enclosure. Vastly.
Same here. He's only in his tank when sleeping. Otherwise, he is in his outdoor enclosure.

When I got my Russian tortoise from I think pet smart, he had a big scar in his shell. What could have caused this?
No clue! Could be many things!
This was informative and hilarious! Perfect!
Great info!
Thanks for watching!
Cool!
Honestly, being notoriously long lived is why I want a tortoise. With other pets, I'm going to have to constantly be reminded that one day they are going to die and I'll have to remember them sadly.
I feel this

My gf and I inherited a Russian tortoise who had his shell painted with house paint(not sure what transpired there)
what should I do as far as shell care?
Soo... 75 gallon tank is off the table?
yes
The plastic kiddy pools are the best , and only 8 bucks.
I like this dude
How do we know it’s Russian, is there a buffing technique to find out?
Can I keep my Russian tortoise in a secure outdoor cage.

Im getting my tortiouse for my bday! Im super exited we are still doing research but i think the russian tortoise is the best (dont mind my spelling im exited! If anyone reads this can i have names?
We named ours Jack Burton after the main character from Big trouble in little china. Plus he seems to like the name since the day we bought him you say Jack or Jack Burton he stops and looks at you.

I had one wander into my front yard today, so looks like we’ll probably be keeping him/her. Looks full grown but someone painted her shell pink. How do I remove this without harming her shell? I know not to scrub it or use a solvent or anything. Just at a loss at how I’m going to get it off. If we keep her we’ll make a safe outdoor home that she can get in and out of and she’ll live outside and have full run of the backyard and then we will bring her in the reptile room for brumation.
I have a tortoise just like yours
Please answer. Is a uvb light the same as a heat lamp
no you need both.
I’m scared, I’m ten and I just bought a tortoise and I’m scared that he doesn’t have enough space or a natural environment, anybody have any tips? I’d really appreciate it because I really don’t want her to die right away

I have a 5 month old bearded dragon (very even temperament & friendly), can I co-house him with a young Russian Tortoise? I have a 75 Gallon tank
Absolutely not. They both require extremely different environments. Beardies are arid while Russians are temperate. Not to mention they would really stress each other out and possibly attempt to kill each other.
No, Russian Tortoises can carry diseases that are harmful to other reptiles. One disease they can carry is a type of herpes virus which can kill your breadie. We have two Russian tortoises and one Breaded Dragon, they have ALWAYS been separated
Sorry for the delay replying. I would not do this for many reasons. High chance of injury/illness
This was very helpful we are new russian tortoise owners of a 1 yr old
Glad it helped!
Can you do a video on the lighting situation ? And if you keep the lights while they brumate?
Up to you on lighting when brumating. Not needed. Maybe will do a video eventually!
Are they able to live in large glass aquariums without water?
I would not put one in an enclosure that small.
I’d say no to glass bc it can confuse them and definitely no water, it’s not an aquatic turtle.
thanks
Thank you for sharing this!
How old is tortellini??
unsure as I got him as an adult. Under 10 is my best guess.
