Never actually liked half shutter on film cameras, waiting for the focus light. I like the way on this you just point and click straight away, much more straight forward. I’ve just ordered one, but the prices have gone up since 2018.
Excellent review! I believe there's no half press so the double press was necessary for refocusing. Kinda sucks, but I will get accustomed once the camera I bought gets in my hands.

Mine seems waaay louder than what I heard in your video - it literally screams. But excellent video, thanks for making it. I have both the cameras you reviewed, and totally agree with everything you said. The Nikon viewfinder is just horrible.
For me it is a perfect camera. Fuji colour1600 and Fuji colour 800 ASA exposed as 400 ASA, without any problem. A camera to have with you while shooting with the Hasselblad or the SINAR. Just one negative fact: the use of 48 mm screw filters. By the way, a very fine You Tube photo channal you have got.

Is it a prematurly fail to lift your finger from the shutter during long exposure times? Wy shoul you lift your finger? Liten to the sound of the running shutter and learn to determine the sound of a short or a long exposure, What about the Hasselblad 500 C cameras with the Zeiss optics wit the inbuilt Compur leafshutters? There is a read warning on the shuttr speed dial at the long exposure times. It is a reminder to keep pressing your finger or cable release during long exposures. For preventing the closing the auxillary shutter. I do not think it was a problem for me the moment I bought my Hasselblad in 1965 Never I forgot to keep the shutterbutton pressed during long exposures time.
I’m sure it’s not a problem to keep your finger on the shutter release to prevent shake for long exposures. It’s possible to shake the camera while doing so unless it’s on a rock-solid heavy tripod. I think cable release is the way to go?
It has a really good lens, and pretty decent fill-flash (actually true of the Nikon as well). It's surprising how well it does everything, even the rudimentary autofocus works really well.
Did you find "your" 35 mm point & shoot camera yet? You might try a Nikon Lite Touch (28 mm lens, more compact and quieter) or that first Minolta P&S, which had AF but manual advance.
I've settled on the Minox 35 because of the image quality, but it has a notoriously unreliable shutter and zone focusing. I like how compact it is but I would like a P&S that's a little more automated. I'll research your recommendations. Thanks!
Nice articulate video, unlike all these kids doing them nowadays. Re. the weird prefocus scheme, the now-familiar half press scheme wasn't invented until later. (by Nikon, in the L35AF, I believe)
For point and shoot cameras I would probably recommend an asa 400 speed film. This is the most versatile. But really asking what kind of film I recommend is like asking which wine I would recommend! So many different factors to take into account. That being said, I really like Kodak Ultramax 400 or Fujicolor Superia 400. If you want to spend more money for a better film, I’d get fuji pro 400h, Kodak portra 400 or Ektar 100! Don’t forget the classic black and white films like ilford hp5 or Kodak tri-x!
No both cameras actually take sharp photos. The photos look soft possibly because they are too low resolution to show up correctly on video. I usually upload full resolution images to Flickr (I didn’t this time) so people can see a more accurate version of the photos. But, yeah both cameras take good photos and have decent lenses. Thanks!
Hello, I am trying to buy this camera, the Canon AF35M on ebay. I have an offer from a seller who can not test the camera (with film). He says “all the switches seem to work. The flash pops up. I put new batteries in it, but I don’t see anything lighting up” and he sent me a photo of the inside, which looks good to me. I noticed in your video that a red light lit up when you pressed the shutter.... so my question is: Would this seller be able to test that the shutter works (with the red light turning on), with no film and the batteries installed? Also, are there any other questions I could ask them that would give me a better chance of knowing the camera works before purchasing it? Thank you so much for this video and your time!
There's no need for film to be inside the camera to test it. If the red light isn't coming on with good batteries in it, there may be something wrong with it. These cameras can't really be repaired either so I would find another one from a seller with a return policy. I stay away from sellers that aren't familiar with film cameras. Good luck!
I have this camera and wanted to test its functions before loading film and specifically with the rewinding mechanism. I haven’t loaded film but I pressed the rewind release button the bottom and slid the rewind button to rewind but the exposure counter doesn’t rewind backwards. Is this due to not having film loaded or a defect?
Film Photography Channel Hey! It’s the Canon one. I just got it and was playing around with it! I wanted to test it before loading film and noticed that the rewind does not rewind on the exposure meter but I can hear the motor when I slide the rewind, is this common if there isn’t film loaded?
@@michaelm3512 Yes that's likely why it isn't counting down. If the film counter is functioning properly, it should count up while progressing through the roll, then it should count down during the rewind function as well. If it's malfunctioning it shouldn't count up or down. Most of the older mechanical film cameras used a sprocket that actually needed film in the camera in order to count frames. Hope this helps.

I only had this camera about 8 months but never had to replace the battery. Also I’ve been using eneloop rechargeable batteries forever and it’s good that the AF35M takes AA batteries. That being said, two AA batteries should last 50 rolls with no flash or 7 rolls with 100% flash usage. I didn’t have any battery issues and haven’t read about the camera having problems. I would check the battery contacts and clean out any rust that may exist.

The images look very soft on the end of your video.. is this camera not perfect on sharpness?
No both cameras actually take sharp photos. The photos look soft possibly because they are too low resolution to show up correctly on video. I usually upload full resolution images to Flickr (I didn’t this time) so people can see a more accurate version of the photos. But, yeah both cameras take good photos and have decent lenses. Thanks!

@@michaelm3512 Fingers crossed! Remember it doesn't auto-rewind. You have to hold the sliding switch until it finishes rewinding. Good luck my friend.
