I like this rendition. The story of this wreck is something to learn from:
In those days of railroading, it was essentially an unwritten rule that when a wreck occurred, the railway management blamed everything on the engineer and crew. “His orders were clear, and he disobeyed by speeding.” Or something to that effect.
However, the railroad’s lucrative contract with the postal service had a clause that penalized them by a large amount of money for EVERY MINUTE the mail train was late, so management ordering engineers to go whatever speed they have to in order to make it in on time was commonplace.
The evidence is clear as crystal: they prioritized profit instead of safety, almost as a company policy.

Don't care what anybody says and even though this is a British recording, I remember the sound of the steam engines as they went by our house only 80 feet or less from our home in Klamath Falls Oregon and my uncle was the Fireman on the old Great Northern and I know what a steam engine sounds like. I love this version and I don't care about the lyrics not being the original. All versions sound good to me because it brings only good and wonderful memories. 1952. Great year.

Hi Bessie! I had a skiffle group back in 1957. I loved performing many railroad kind of songs. This recording was put together by my dear son Alex who sadly passed away in 2018. I played all the instruments which he blended to produce the 'group' effect. I am very grateful for your kind comments. May God bless you. Stay safe, but always stay happy! Kind regards Kiwi Keegan

@@kiwihans100 dear sir, I am so glad for you and your son's music. It sounds just like an engine laboring away hauling a heavy load. My whole family loves train songs. I like the skiffle songs from the 50s. That's why I love You Tube because it has all kinds of music for everyone. One recording I liked back in the day was Ben Dewberry by the original Jimmie Rogers. Also, Hobo Bill's Last Ride.
I almost lost my daughter to the covid a few weeks ago and I almost lost my mind. Know you son is in a good place now.

Speaking as someone who lived in Danville VA, the train crashed into the Dan River, not the creek you mentioned in the video.

I read somewhere that Broady was unfamiliar with the road, which would have been a contributory factor. I once met someone who came from Danville; he didn't think I'd know the place. When I asked if he meant the place where Old 97 wrecked, he was amazed. "Heck, I didn't expect a Limey to even know the song, let alone the story behind it!)

Thank you, sir! I'm a Watts and there are a lot of us Watts in Lynchburg, Campbell County, and Amherst County, Virginia. I'm 80 now and Daddy and my grandmother often spoke of this tragic wreck and of the song. I'm from Richmond but of course often visited this area of Piedmont Virginia. Thanks again. (As an aside I'm a former Marine, Vietnam 1968-69 and now live in the Spinal Cord Injury Residential Unit at the VA Medical Center in Hampton, Virginia. Semper Fidelis!)

Thanks for your lovely comment! I learned this song as a teenager in London where I formed my first skiffle group. We appeared on BBCTV on the same programme as Jimmy Page ( Led Zepplin). I loved all those great Woody Guthrie & Ledbelly ballards! I still play them at the age of 80! od bless you.

Thank you Justin. If that is the case then the photo has been wrongly titled. We will have to view it just as an example of what happened more than once on the early rail network. It was truly amazing also how the transcontinental railway was built for over 3000 miles right across america! Apparently most of work was done by about 1000 chinese workers! Cheers. Pete 'Kiwi'

the song is wrong the engineer was only doing between 50 to 70 MPH. The facts are at. Spencer which is the NCTM and the former Spencer Shops of Southern Railway. that is where the train was heading.

Why in the name of what ever are you trying to rewrite history. I take it you have never visited the site where these actual people lost their lives. If you had you would not have killed what is a good song. Also yours is not the original version. This song could only be described as a train wreck sung by some one who was drunk. Lastly, if I were standing in front of you, I'd have some more things to say and legal papers to hand you.
