Turned 18 in 72. Halfway around the world in the US but this could be my friends and I at the lake on summer break. Lived outdoors, skateboards and no screens.😅 If someone had said, someday you'll be turning 70 ...
Born in 1964 and grew up in Cronulla-Sutherland, we never called it 'The Shire' back then, those who were there back in the day don't either. We rode our skateboards in the school grounds on weekends, rode bikes with boards under our arms to the beach, snuck out of school at lunchtime and went to Jackson's and Gordon and Smith surfboards to dream about owning a new board. Down to Endeavour Field on the weekend in winter to watch the Sharks play, Chips and Chiko Rolls from Joe's Milkbar, fishing in any number of the bays when the surf was crap. What a blessed childhood me, my brothers and friends had. I re-visited a year ago for a friend's funeral and I hated the place. Overcrowded, hipsters and wannabes, spent all my time dodging people on the Esplanade or in the main street with their faces planted in smartphones. Couldn't even swim my Labrador in Gunnamatta Park. At least the Sharks are back in Endeavour Field (Shark Park), that's still worth the 5 hour drive down the Coast.
I similar to you, born '62 grew up Taloombi Str on Gunnamatta Bay then Kirkwood Rd near Wanda beach. Haven't been to Kurra Nulla in years but last time I didn't recognise it, not least since the sandhills where I lived were all raped & sold long time ago ! Being a teen there in the 70's life was laid back & we took so much for granted, carefree fun times 😊
I love the freedom we had then...even things like skateboarding in the school grounds. Your videos capture a time in history so beautifully. I love your work.
I never lived in The Shire (I envy you, not in a bad way), you truly live in Gods country. Let’s hope The Shire doesn’t get ruined by overdevelopment, like much of Sydney has. Great video of much happier times.
When I get stressed I come back to watch your videos they are so peaceful and take me to a time I never experienced but really wish I could of :( life seemed pure then
Hey Ross, great vids I only just discovered last week. I was really excited to see 10 yo me on my skateboard in this '72 footage and I so clearly remember that day. Are you the guy coach Gibbo' had filming his team's RL games ? I have a feeling you are, I was a DeLaSalle school mate of Luke & remember being with you at a Souths game at the SSG, Don Lane sat nearby. Was that you ?
Ha ! 😂 Yeah at 3:09 standing middle background, jeans blue sloppy-joe blond hair, then croach skateboard. At 3:22 I look direct to camera as I return. I saw the film last nite remembered Buraneer Bay School and how we all used to ride there on weekends. I was in awe of the older guys/surfers as it was early days of skateboarding which took off in such a big way. I was a surf grommet living Kirkwood Rd down the hill from Wanda SLSC. Such great memories tho' and I still miss close mates like Luke G. & Ian 'Parky' who passed far too early 😢 Great work putting these priceless films out Ross... You are a Legend brother, Love it mate & I pray you are healthy & happy 😍 😊
@@Mark_Blanes Found you, glad you got caught up in the filming. Ha Ha. Thankyou very much for the well wishes. Yes I'm all happy & healthy in my retirement here on the Gold Coast. I moved from Cronulla a few years ago after living there for nearly 60 years. Doesn't sound so long when you say it fast. (ps I'm working on another surfing film for UA-cam at the moment. All shot in Cronulla in the late 70's).
Hi guys - fantastic footage! Was wondering if I could get in touch with someone about using some of this in a project. Did you have an email I could contact you on? Cheers, Rosie
@@ramdarook Thanks Ross, thought it was, recognized a few places when I lived there in the 70s, nice song by Max Merritt who sadly is no longer with us.

I was born in Newport in 1965. This is very nostalgic for me, in more ways than one ❤.

Thats a classic old kiwi song from Max Merritt and the Meteors, seems like yesterday hearing on the radio it as a new release.
