1. Tell someone where you’re going. 2. Make sure everyone you’re hiking with knows exactly where their going and how long it’ll take. 3. Check the weather. 4. Be aware of local wildlife in your area. 5. Make sure you take the ten essentials systems. 6. Look up while you’re hiking.
Tip #1 is so underrated I can’t stress it enough thank you for mentioning this I’ve seen a lot of other beginner tips videos and you’re the only one to mention this so far
Thank you for a well thought video that is efficient with information! So many UA-cams you have to watch 1 to 2 minutes before truly getting to content. Well done!
Totally agree with the heads up additude. Be aware of your surroundings, dead tree limbs can easily kill if a big one falls from a tree! Be careful guys!

Im starting to get into hiking & just being out in nature. My first challenge is hiking my local metroparks which is about 7mi through. I recently rode my bike on the trail there & it took about 2hrs there & back.
I thought about trying hiking. I think I'd go with one to three friends and at least one that is experienced. I know to bring some food like nuts and cereal bars, some first aid supplies, water and a lifestraw, lighter, compass, hand radios, whistle, flashlight and small lantern, knife, a couple handguns with ammo, probably 50+ rounds for each, a small thermal blanket, and I can't think of anything else right now. Realistically I will think about it for months first and make a list of stuff I think I'll need along the way while watching videos like these. I always think of water and weapons first, then try to figure out what else I may need. :)

Thanks for the vid! I'm wanting to get into hiking, but I have so many questions! I grew up walking around the woods, but I've never gone "hiking" before. I signed up for a group hike that was going to be 5-6 hours up and down steep hills, etc. One of the members canceled saying it looked too intense. I checked her profile and she looked totally hardcore, so I canceled too. Hey, you gotta start somewhere right? So here I am watching these beginner guides and pondering where to start. Really appreciate your channel, subbed.
Thank you for watching and subscribing! I think a group hike is the perfect place the start! Maybe there will be another group hike soon that's not as intense!

Thanks for the tips. Me and my husband are planning a hike to my. Rainier . Of course an easy hike. But I have this anxiety to start the journey. We have never hiked before . What would you suggest if we go hiking all by ourselves? Like not going with any group . Would that be still ok?
BOOTS, WEAR BOOTS. And have a medkit on you, especially sutures, ankle wraps, and leg splints. It can suck really bad if you hurtself. And lots and lots of water. Thats it.
You dont HAVE to wear boots. Wear something that is comfortable and is sized properly for your feet. Also, learn to use a Sawyer Squeeze filter. Bringing some water is good, but bringing so much that it weighs you down can make your hike more like hard labor and less like fun.

Awesome channel Amanda! I'm a beginner planning to travel and hike around the west coast. It's a little intimidating to go solo but I figure once I get the hang of it it will be a blast. Keep up the great work.
Do you or someone you know have any tips for hiking and backpacking with kids?? My 9 year old wants to go with me. I'm just beginning myself and I'm trying to research everything.
Great video, you have some very useful tips. I only recently have gotten into hiking myself, I’ve only done a few small hiking trips with the longest around 10kms long, but I hope to do many more =]

Have you done night hiking? If so, have you stayed till morning to hike down or hiked back down at night? Would you recommend night hiking for inexperienced hikers?
Hi Amanda, I just subscribed to your channel! I haven't been hiking since I moved to Southern California from the beautifully wooded East Coast...so quite honestly, not knowing much about the wildlife and deserts, I'm being very cautious before I go out on my first real day hike. It seems like a completely different planet out here. I look forward to watching your videos and greatly appreciate the time you have spent making them. Happy Trails, Carol
Hi Carol! Welcome! I actually grew up on the East Coast and moved to California in my early 20's, so I definitely understand the differences! I live in Utah now, which is such a cool place if you like the desert. I hope you enjoy your first few California hikes and thank you so much for commenting!
Good one Amanda although an oldy. Yeah get involved and look up. I gotta say we live in badger country and not bear country but all other tips apply. All the best. Mark

Really important to learn from those who have gone before you. You simply don't have enough time to make all the mistakes yourself.

holy shit. this is literally the funniest comment i’ve ever read.
The weather changes easily, especially in the mountains, desert or on the coast... Always be prepared...
I need a video on Hiking for dummies. I've never been, but have always wanted to. I literally know nothing about hiking, other than walking.

It is a good idea that you rode your bike there first to familiarize yourself with the area! Good luck with your goal
