- The American Library Association found that 4,240 books were targets of censorship efforts in 2023, with about half of those books written by or including people of color and those from LGBTQ communities. CBS News executive director of elections and surveys Anthony Salvanto spoke with Anthony Nicodemo, a gay teacher and basketball coach in Westchester County, New York, about his message to proponents of book bans.

Oh my days. Someone finally talking some actual sense. People are people, we are all human, and deserve the same rights, as long as they hurt no one else. Note, that I say hurt. Not make uncomfortable. Nobody should not be treated less than because it makes someone else feel more comfortable.
Despite who they love, who they worship, what colour their skin is, where they come from, and what gender they are or identify as.
It's not hard science. Let's start treating everyone with a bit of respect.

As a gay man and retired elementary teacher of 37 years, I knew it was my professional obligation to bring the broader world to my students through the curriculum. Luckily, I live in a state that does not ban books, so I was able to represent our own "bubble" community but far beyond with books. I facilitated discussions where students would respectfully disagree with each other about social issues, often using their parents' thoughts. This was great, seeing students articulate thoughts and listen to others who might think differently. Never, ever, would I interject my personal political views or opinions into my classroom. A teacher is merely a facilitator and one who equips students to thrive in a broader world.
"I was able to represent our own bubble community" and "Never, ever would I interject my personal political views or opinions into my classroom" sound contradictory. Were you teaching your students about same sex or not?
I’m not understanding these comments. Where does he say he’s discussing these interview questions with his students while he is teaching? He’s just being interviewed for his political opinions and no where does it say he’s teaching his political opinions. Please stop demonizing educators. Our police and nurses have been demonized for other political reasons. We are losing the most important people in our society that provide us education, safety, and healthcare. Thanks for your comment. It is emotionally exhausting when people do not want to be clear with terms, or they deny agendas that have been recorded way too often.
This isn't "existing" but making propaganda to trick people, who have to rephrase everything, like experience frmale puberty to play in women's sports, to avoid a lawsuit.
I've even read stories of how some of these ex-men break into women's shelters and demand priority. But can't say they're trying to replace biological women.
Similarly, in a ton of shows today, they make shirtless men eye candy (can't objectify women like how xmen 97 shrunk rogue, but we must have magneto in bondage and underwear) and try to remove any kind of tension between lesbian couples (like how Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are more pushed/idealized than Korra and Asami).
Am I supposed to not notice? It really isn't fair to try to make me watch, tell me my familiar IP hasn't estranged me for views like xmen (morph x wolverine, or comic polygamy with wolverine, cyclops and jean grey) or star wars, or call me names. There's tons of yaoi/yuri mangas and lgbt stories nobody knows about because the IP isn't brand recognition of popularity, so they piggyback to change it. Of course teach won't ever cover this. Though at least some stuff is kid appropriate like inside out 2, Legos and Ariel on Disney Jr (without Melissa Mccarthy overselling drag queens, which makes it seem she had no idea how to be a woman/Ursula without them in the live action bad little mermaid). Queen Latifah was a nice Ursula too, lesbian and no push because there are better things to do.

Looks like a nice school. It’s important that kids learn about accepting differences, be they cultural or religious or abilities rather than learning how to carry on bigotry, hating and stereotyping. I like how he listens carefully to the reporters questions, pauses to consider, then gives an honest answer. He seems to be a good, caring teacher, coach and role model. We need to learn that this is a big country that works best when we accept differences in others. Our differences make us stronger as a nation, a state, a community.
Yes in the right way but they’d rather play games
But leftists only care about accepting differences when it suits them. That's what I've observed. They're all for empathy, love is love, etc. but the minute you question their doctrines, they swarm and attack you like an outsider and a threat. When I see conservatives behave, they're likelier to debate with you or just simply move on.
Therefore, my conclusion is this, some things like universal principles and moral law are foundational. We should love and respect one another. But we shouldn't go so as far as violating our foundations to accommodate "differences". Some boundaries shouldn't be moved. They're time-tested and have brought us the prosperity and wealth we enjoy today in this great nation.
Let's be careful, be open to debate, and get to the bottom of things instead of attacking each other for different views.
@@hellotheremyolfriend I agree that we need more care and respect in how we treat each other. It works best that way. Where it goes wrong is when person A (left or right, religious or not) is so righteously sure of themselves that they think that person B is wrong and “evil”….and needs to be controlled, criminalized or worse just so person A can prove that they are “right”. Fear of the other is what drives most of this behavior. We can respect the person and their choices/beliefs (so long as they are not hurting others). This does not mean we have to share their views or values , But we can respect their humanity and rights. It’s when we try to impose our values and beliefs on one another that trouble begins.

I always say it's not the LGBTQ+ lefts that are the problem, it's the parents of these questioning marginalized groups. These parents want to feel powerful or be besties with their kids instead of teaching moderation and patience. Especially in this polarizing world. We older gays suffered for decades until we could have a grasp of equality. Just to exist and assimilate. Not demand attention, that doesn't really work unless you are wealthy.
So for all the folks against the ability for teachers and students to discuss anything about being gay, if you knew an LGBTQ child and their parents were homophobic and would kick them out of the house if they found out--would you rather them have a teacher at school to mentor them and ask questions to or go online with sexual predators, pornography, and sextoration? To me, this goes without question that a trusting adult and teacher is a far better avenue.
If they're a kid they shouldn't be doing anything sexual anyway. No, adults shouldn't be teaching kids deviant sexual stuff. The choice you offered is a false dichotomy. Any responsible parent would make sure neither occurs.
Who's talking about anything sexual here ?
The comment was if the parents found out that their child was gay they'd kick him out.
The simple fact is that there should be resources in schools for LGBTQ kids , the statistics surrounding Homelessness , sexual abuse, Bullying of LGBTQ kids and young adults is Stagering , and guess who the the abusers are ? Heterosexual men , every single study and statistic will tell you that .
If we need to protect kids from anyone is that demographic.
@@duckmercy11 You do realize that having a crush or going on a date to a movie (something kids under 18 do all the time) is sexual in nature, right? I never knew any of my teachers sexual preferences. Why do people tell total strangers what they do in private.
They usually don't, it's normally someone else who brings it up and makes a big deal of it.
Interesting. I knew that my first through fourth grade teachers were married with children, so I knew that they had probably procreated unless they were actually living married but celibate lives and had adopted their children. This all inferred that they were heterosexual even though they never stated that as fact. My fifth grade teacher was single, had never been married, so I wasn't positive but I guessed that she was a lesbian. This was all in the 1970s. So your assertion that you knew nothing about your teachers' sexual preference strikes me as either disengenuous or incredibly dense on your part.
Because it's become a " look at me world".

Everyone including the staff knew but no-one really brought it up other than us kids joking about it behind their backs, my mom was a secretary at the school and I asked if it was true but she just kind of shrugged her shoulders and said she didn't know. My point is you're absolutely right, their sexual preferences were never an issue because it was never discussed.
Letting people know that LGBTQ peope exist, they already know some, they are decent normal people, and should be valued and accepted is not shoving anything down anyone's throat. It is educating them to the reality of the world they live in.
Forcing all people to read your bible on school unless you are teaching it as literature is shoving religion down people's throats.
Cheers; well said. Proper, healthy, and professional boundaries can certainly still be maintained without any LGBTQ people having to lie, cover-up, or otherwise don an invisibility cloak. The same acknowledgement ought be given any students who are bullied for being perceived as LGBTQ. Teachers must be able to respond and reiterate that such behaviour will not be tolerated, and that all are equal.
Of course it's shoving down people's throat. You similarly don't want to listen. You don't exist passively and do all this bs for attention. Worst fear is nobody cares/notices, or worse, see the consequences as the grades and money slip when it goes out of style.

I think Transgender is a more complicated topic than the others. So I would say teachers shouldn't give advice about this topic...they should be supportive in the capacity of listening and accepting the kid's issue/dilemma. Only when the parents/guardians are unable to help is when the teacher should step up, by directing them to a consultant who are experts in the topic.

@taylorcuthrell4123 what is your point ? I am merely saying correctly what is was factually like to grow up in Greenwich connecticut in the 1980s.
@willmont8258 I grew up in Kansas in a time without youtube and much social media other than facebook and we didn’t have cable at the time either. In contrast to many of those who grew up in larger cities, I didn’t even know what the word gay meant. I found out what it meant after being called gay by strangers I had never met and then after looking things up online figured out what they had meant.
How do you think it makes a child feel when they are 8 years old with strangers asking you if you’re gay at school and at camp, and you don’t even know what the word means, let alone why they are asking despite it being none of their business? No single adult-my parents or teachers-ever told me what it meant and I didn’t even know if it was normal to be that way. I kept it bottled inside for years and it ate me alive. I was bullied at school and had an abusive dad at home and a sick mom, so who was I to turn to?
Had I had a single adult tell me that it’s normal, it could have erased the sleepless nights and suicidal ideations because I knew that what I was feeling was normal. You have to understand that times were very different then and that in some families still, being gay will get you kicked out of their house and shunned by their community. With that being said, a teacher lending a hand may be the safest adult to cling to in order to ensure the child’s safety.
I hear where you are coming from but in your comment, you make the erroneous assumption that all families accept LGBTQ folks and that their parents will talk about it at home-well, that’s not at all the reality and organizations like “Gay Straight Alliance” or having an LGBTQ teacher as a mentor on how to navigate their home situation and feelings allow kids a venue to talk freely about their thoughts and feelings in a safe space for visibility when they may not receive that at home. Bringing up their sexuality to their parents at home is something that could even put the child’s safety and wellbeing at risk, let alone compromise their relationships with their family and possibly the house they call home. Thus, why not provide an avenue for kids to discuss this at school? Or would you rather kids resort to trying to find an online community that may compromise their safety in a different way. You can try and censor your children all you want, but with ubiquitous technology, they will find a way to deceive you as a parent regardless, but this depends on how open you are to discuss this as well as the access to other people that can mentor them at school or a place of worship for example.
It’s like you can have organizations based on race at school like a Black or Asian student organization, you can have robotics clubs and community service clubs, but you can’t have a safe space for LGBTQ students or those questioning their sexuality a safe space to discuss this simply because it’s about sex? If they can’t discuss it at home then where else with a trusted adult?
The irony is states like Oklahoma and Louisiana are quick to put a copy of the 10 commandments in the classroom despite the fact that many folks are either atheists or are of a religion other than Judaism and Christianity and yet having a safe space for LGBTQ teens to talk freely about their thoughts and feelings when they may be unable to at home seems like the most unreasonable thing to them. No one is insinuating that they should talk about sexual activity, but if they can’t talk about loving someone of the same sex at home, or at school, online is all you have left-and with sexual predators, sextortion, and pornography, that seems like a stark contrast from having the ability to discuss it in schools if they have a tumultuous home life.
While many with your perspective see this issue as black and white, it is far from it and while I respect your opinion and understand it, I urge you to think about things from a perspective other than your own.

Why does a child need to know what you prefer sexually?
Because it's not about sex. It's about love. It's the same issue with hetero teachers discussing their parterns and their kids in class.
@@lyraserpentine894 if it's about love, what do we do with people who love small children? If a straight teacher talks to them about sexuality in class, I would worry about what kind of person he is.

It’s definitely the younger generation who just had everything handed to them who have caused this backlash. They became so militant.. They’ve single-handedly destroyed all progress of gay rights activism for the last five decades.
It’s the content in those LGBT books that is so disturbing
You must not read much. Try the Bible. Definitely not something we should be exposing our kids to.
@@CattleDog2856 I’ll give the bible a miss thanks
Correct, but it's not anyone's fault that the people responsible for putting certain books in certain parts of the library are being reckless and putting books where they don't belong.
@@nerdgenius915 Of course , its crazy that these people allow these books to be in their libraries but the people writing these books are directing them specifically at children in the first place
@@sem5397 An article came out last year that the books such as Gender Queer was not meant to be put in the library for kids to read, it was actually meant for educators to better understand when they encounter students who identify as LGBT, but that the people responsible for giving the books to schools recklessly put them where did not belong. Now because of that mistake the clowns running our governments have made political careers out of demonizing, dehumanizing and making it legal to discriminate us for their own political gain. So if people wanna be angry about why these books are in schools, they should be angry at the people who have made these careless actions, not the LGBT community in whole.
As long as a teacher keeps any personal values or that sort of thing completely out of his or her work with students, that is Ok surely.
But why would you even say that? If you see a woman teacher wearing a wedding ring, would you immediately caveat that with “as long as she keeps any personal values or that sort of thing out of her work either students”, no foul. It's ridiculous that you even feel the need to qualify it like that.
This guy does not represent me and the views of many other gay people. Transgenderism has nothing at all to do with gay people. Leave it to the mainstream media to bunch in transgenderism and gays in the same article.
Of course stuff is going on outside the bubble, but do kids need to know all the gritty details about it? It went from sex education to kink education, from science to political correctness. We have a separation of church and state, now we need a separation of woke and state.
None of what you just said made any sense!
What part of sex education is educating on kinks?
Be specific
How can you say, with a straight face, that we have separation of church and state when the ten commandments and bibles are worming their way back into public school classrooms?
@DavidLS1 Well we used to. I think it's in response to the woke ideology.
@Leidolfr No, I'm saying they're adding kinks and political correctness to sex education. Like defecating or trans women are women. And how if you say you're trans, then you are. It couldn't possibly be something else and they don't even want to talk about mental health services for it unless it's to give a prescription. They go too far.
I dont think a teachers sexuality should be known by students regardless of preference.
Does this really need to be a conversation right now?
Students get an idea of a teacher's sexuality in a variety of ways, i.e. when hearing about being engaged or married. Nothing unusual or inappropriate.
@@CJinMonoBut same sex marriages and similar things occur these days anyway, so I think that may possibly be a moot point these days(?).

The culture wars of today are about special treatment, not equal treatment. The foundation of education in America is liberal at all levels in 2024, from educators to school boards to administrators to law makers. I agree that you cannot live in a bubble. But I also believe people shouldn’t be forced to assimilate. There seems to be a misconception that the situation is gay kids are shy and being bullied by the non gays. That is not true many gay kids are popular and outgoing. Sure it sucks to an introvert gay kid and those kids get picked on by gay kids who are popular. Those gay popular kids who preach about their rights and acceptance and all that. But they don’t practice what they preach, because they bully gay introvert kids just so they feel superior gay and those introvert kids are inferior gays. They grow up to be fashion designers, content creators, internet celebrities etc… while the introvert gay kids grew up with bad experiences and trouble lives. It’s not about gay vs straight, race, ethnics, it’s about the strong wants to dominate the “weak”. Some people don’t want egalitarianism yet they will take advantage of it. You want to fix your today society student problems, don’t force politics on them. Because at the end of the day the bullies will be the bullies regardless of what their orientation or beliefs or culture or whatever they are the scmbags will be scmbags.
You want to fix the problem. Treat the students socializing skills as the same as performance they do academically. Like how you have Resource rooms, ESL rooms, or in most severe cases special education classes. You separate these vulnerable introverted kids from the bully kids and focused on their socializing performance. Because in the real world the education you learn in school is jack sheet, how often do we use what we learned at school in our jobs or in daily life in general? Like almost never. But socializing skills that’s the major thing we need, we have people who doesn’t function well in society even if they do good grades in school and their parents send them to good colleges then they ends up with student debts and poor jobs because they did not learned to socialize. Duhhhh bummer!!!!!
And also you wouldn’t do those special classes for socially less engaging kids. Because if you do you will find some of these kids have …umm what you call?…” difficult home lives” or situations outside of academia that you and the education people don’t want to get into. Which I don’t blame you because I can relate, I myself don’t want to get into/involved with that nitty gritty stuff these unfortunately kids have outside of school. But don’t put on this mask you don’t want into nuances so you label everything into one political aspect. Whether it’s about gay rights or racial equality or religion/culture or environmental. And then say to people “ look look we have these functions in our school. See see we are doing something about it”when in actuality you really are not. So stop with this Bull. Sorry if I offended you.
The offensive part is that the arrogance. You're no expert
What if a teacher is a drug addict? He doesn't do drugs in class but he feels that he must tell all of the students that he is a drug addict and does drugs when he is home with his partner. Is that something the kids should know?
