Thanks Bram 🙏 She did like it. A lot !! I care about tool marks - well, actually about the *absence* of them - sort of OCD about it I guess 😌 I am getting better with NR scraping and gouge and shear cutting where I used to rely *heavily* on sandpaper. So thanks again for noticing 🙏 Take care. -Mike
Hi Mike, That is such a lovely bowl. The simple lines of the piece make it look so elegant. Nice to see you back on YT my friend. I'm glad your neighbour will loved it. Great video and work Mike. Take care. Cheers, Huw
Well, well, well. I think it is the biggest bowl You have showed to us, Mike. Glad You didn't missed somewhere between boxes 🤭 This bowl joined Your old and new workshops. I love this glossy shine and laser endgraiving. Also Your work with bowl gouge is more courage 👌 (catches happens to everyone, even masters). All the best my friend 👍 Rav
Thanks my friend ... it is a big bowl but only 2nd biggest (remember the 12inch limba?). I never packed it away but kept near always during the move just so I wouldn't lose it. It took so long because I had to set up the laser and remove the tenon in the new shop. We do love our lasers hehe ! I haven't found anything that is easier to change and customize as needed. If you want. I always figured I would have decent gouge skills by my 200th bowl - it's nice of you to say I may be a wee bit ahead of schedule🙏 Take care Rav. -Mike
Nice bowl for the neighbor. Dyes (and ink) goes on before the shellac, not after. Shellac seals the surface, preventing the dye from penetrating the wood surface. Give it another try sometime.
Hi Valerie, good to hear from you - it's been a while. Jean really liked the bowl - her face lit up when she first saw it 😊😊😊 That's certainly good advice about one use of shellac if you're wanting to stain the wood directly. I was experimenting here with color in the finish itself - think amber, blond, or my favorite, garnetlac shellacs. Adding alcohol inks, like I was trying, can enhance or change a finish's color - I make a chunk of apple turn fairly orange with Ember colored alcohol ink - remember my "Got Any Apples in that Bag Mister?" video ? Thanks again Valerie🙏 Take care. -Mike
Hi Mike... I was wondering what was going on when it started in your old workshop... Turned out beautiful... your neighbour should be delighted... The laser engraving was very nice... so handy... Take care...All the best.....Andy
Thanks for the nice words Andy, I just try my best and sometimes it works out ! Jean loved it - you should have seen her smile !! Yep, the laser is very handy - easy enough to set up for custom work. Thanks again🙏 Take care. -Mike
That came out very well Mike, the finish is really great! I would be nervous as heck turning such an expensive, shop-bought blank, always worrying that I might ruin it. 😁
Thank you Doug; I am happy you like it and took the time to comment - it means a lot coming from such a skilled woodworker as you. Thanks again🙏 Take care. -Mike
Love this bowl Mike. Excellent finish👌. Too bad the coloring wasn't quite what you wanted. Funny that this video was made in your old and new workshop. And how great is that laser. That is really a wonderful addition for the woodturner and woodworker. Take care and all the best! Frank.
Thanks Frank👍 Yeah, more ink or layers would've helped the color but it didn't make it any uglier to be sure 😁 Laser ? I agree, the best thing since sliced bread ... well maybe since HSS tools Lol ! Thanks again🙏 Take care. -Mike
🔸 This is a 10x3" (25x7.5cm) Cherry bowl requested by a neighbor in my old neighborhood. She loved the bowl. I loved making it for her ! 🔸 I tried to add some color but it didn't work out - it was going to be a thing of beauty ! Oh well🤷 🔸Here's a tip in the vid: Normally shellac has wax in it ... special steps have to be taken to remove it (it is in the raw shellac) ... if you let the shellac mixture sit and not mix it, the wax will settle out at the bottom (it looks like milk) and you can remove by decanting although a baster or syringe or pipette works well too ... Why remove the wax ? Sometimes other finishes may not adhere as well; I've seen reports of polyurethanes and epoxy resins not sticking to shellac base coats ... BTW, Zinsser 'Seal Coat' sanding sealer is a 2 pound cut of *dewaxed* shellac. Their other shellacs contain wax ! 🔸 Here's a tip that got cut from the vid ... I will use a piece of 'dead' sandpaper to show what needs more work ... it makes the flaws (tool marks or scratches) stand out and become easy to see. Mostly I use worn out 220 or finer Garnet paper (the red stuff) because it gets dull unlike other types of sandpaper which stay sharp 🔸 At one point I mentioned a catch (sorry no film) but my head got in the way ... I was trying to show the importance of keeping the chisel fairly perpendicular to the tool rest to maintain leverage ... it was almost parallel to the tool rest so an aggressive cut couldn't be out-muscled and thus the catch 🔸 I coined a new term - "Grub" - do you have a better term ? 🔸 As usual, leave a comment if the video quality has some areas you don't care for or are annoying or you would want ... things like out of focus; volume is not consistent; screechy or annoying sounds; no music; jarring transitions; jumpy storyboard; too wordy; not enough talking ... please, it can only help us all, especially you the viewers 💛❤💗💜 A big *Thank You* to all my subscribers and to everyone who watched 🙏 Please, stay safe. -Mike 💎 Don't forget to use code "mpart10" to get 10% off when you buy Ack's abrasive sanding paste. I use it a lot but don't always show it in the footage - it has many, many uses ... I love it
Thank you much sir - I tend to prefer and enjoy the simple designs. And yes, store bought - about 3x above my limit but the client covered the cost on this one😊 Thanks again🙏 Take care. -Mike
Thanks for watching and the nice comment Woody🙏 It is an Outur LM2 laser. Thinking of getting one ? Email me if I you want any advice ! Thanks again🙏 Take care. -Mike
Hi Mike, love the bowl, how did you take the tenon off? did I miss something?? I'm on break at the moment, doing a basement remodel job and I got a laser a bit back so that is keeping me occupied.. - Paul
Thanks for the comment Paul and the kind words👍😊 ... I took the tenon off in the usual way - held in my 10" Cole jaws with tailstock keeping it in place while delicately cutting the tenon to a nub. Remove the nub off the lathe with a bench chisel. Then the dicey part ... sand to perfection using hand pressure in lieu of the tailstock pressure (the bowl was really too big for the jaws and would come loose). And Bob's yer uncle. Of course I could have completed by hand once the nub was small enough. Laser ? A diode laser like mine or something bigger and better like a big bucks CO2 laser ?
Love the branding too....
Like my new toy eh ? It's like topping with a cherry or three 🍒🍒 (so much fun and so many other things to do with it besides my bowls😍😍
