Louis Johnson as bassist made the funk more awesome.

One of the most versatile classical, rhythm- blues and progressive jazz guitar players to have graced the industry. But to truly appreciate his work one would have to focus on his earlier works which validate and emphasize the true talent of this silent giant whose music has always been larger than life.

Carnegie Hall, NYC, October 1978. An all-star show, opening with Steve Khan and his band; the second act, the Brecker brothers. Earl closed the show. I talked my way backstage, and told him he was one of my heroes. He autographed my program -- "Thanks! (signature)"
Radio City Music Hall, 1989. He and Basia did a show sponsored by WQCD-FM (the "smooth jazz" station at the time). This song closed the show and the bass player tore the roof off the mofo! No autograph this time, but still magical.
