    I always felt like after Truth saw millions of his people become infected in High Charity, he kind of lost his mind.
    He was always a little delusional and crazy, since he definitely believed in the great journey (even after he spoke with the monitor). He probably denied what the monitor said, like the Arbiter first did when he heard Halo's purpose when fighting the Heretic leader.
    But, Truth took it to another level of fanaticism during Halo 3 after losing everything at the end of Halo 2. He was too deep into the lie to abandon it, but he probably genuinely believed it in the past (and still did on some level before he died).

      “5 years ago I lost 30 thousand men in the blink of an eye, and the world just fuckin watched.” Like Shepard truth lost just about everything, his power, his covenant broken, his life nearing an end because he failed. He knew it was his fault, and in his now insanity induced guilt wanted to take everyone else with him knowing that he would meet his end even after the rings fired via the flood inside the citadel or his fellow brutes eventually coming to the conclusion it was all a lie.

    I think Truth believed his Godhood would be the fact that he alone controlled the remaining sentient life in the Galaxy after firing the rings. He would be able to mold it the way he wanted.

    I like to think of it as this, Truth was able to fill the role as a prophet with the knowledge that The Great Journey was false in Halo 2. In Halo 3 after he lost High Charity, after their Empire was torn apart by the Great Schism, and essentially knowing that Humanity, Elites, and The Flood had cornered The Covenant for the first time since its Writ of Union, he was unable to differentiate the two personas apart. So yeah essentially insane lol.

    Great work! I love your videos, just watched a few and I instantly subbed. On Truth though I actually believe that he was indeed, sane. While his lines *seemingly* contradict one another, between his admission of the Halo Rings' nature to Johnson and his spoutings of Godhood, that there is actually a point of view where he still is, infact, correct. He says that Johnson, likely referring to all humanity, were left behind because "they were weak, and Gods must be strong". In a way, this is what happend; humans and countless other sapient creatures were stowed away within the protection of the mantle to save them from the Halo detonation. The Gods were 'strong' enough, in an emotional sense, to sacrifice many of themselves for the greater good, and to shield the weaker species. To Truth, the true path of the Forerunner, to Godhood, may have been to emulate this sacrifice, and perhaps if he had stowed away in the Mantle, he would have been awarded for the Covenant's sacrifice with the Mantle of Responsibility.

    • @WhyTho525
      @WhyTho525 3 роки тому

      I don't think he was sane, I think he was just megalomaniacal and power-hungry and didn't care who or what he has to sacrifice to achieve his goals. However, in his final moments when he still claimed that he will be a god, I think he only lost his mind before his death.

    I always felt that Halo 2 and Halo 3 had a very large character change for Truth. In Halo 2, Truth seemed to be somewhat irreligious. He definitely believed in the Covenant religion, but he was more of their political leader, leaving the religious side of things to Mercy and Regret. He became an absolute fanatic in Halo 3. Less like a pope, and more like a psychotic cult leader.

    Well technically Truth and the Covenant would ascend as some form of godhood after firing the rings. Humanity was entrusted with the Mantle. Fire the rings from the Ark, Humanity would be wiped out leaving the Covenant as the remaining sentient life. So in retrospect, the Mantle of Responsibility would default to them and can use Forerunner technology freely... or what Truth thought would happen

  • @Spike-13

    I think he did go insane at some point during Halo 3.
    I think it's also safe to say that he did indeed understand the rings true power. Maybe by killing all life and being the sole survivors was akin to godhood to him? The ultimate power to decide the date of the universe?

  • @4ld3m4r5

    If I recall correctly, someone confirmed that Truth's plan was to repopulate and rule the universe as he pleased with a selected minority of San'shayum hidden in a secure place. Technically, becoming a God of some sorts but once he knew that defeat was inevitable, and he was about to become part of Gravemind, he completely lost his marbles and began to speak deliriously.

  • @jman2001jt
    @jman2001jt 3 роки тому

    It could also be argued in that being the one to erase all life in the galaxy, he essentially would be in the position of a god.
    Another interesting wrinkle here is Halo 2’s original cut ending. The Ark was originally going to be on Earth and Truth tries to fire the rings from there, where he was definitely in the kill zone. Not to mention the fact that he entrusted Tartarus with activating Delta Halo in the final game. These all point to him still believing in the Great Journey, unless somehow sealing himself in the Ark could protect him from Halo’s fire.
    I think Truth definitely has an inclination of what the Rings really do, but ironically he is so obsessed with lying that he slowly starts to believe his own.

    For the lines that acknowledges the truth about the nature of the Halo Rings, they seem directed in a very private nature. However, in his more religious spoutings of godhood, they seem to be more of a show for the Brutes around him. As for the “I shall become a god” lines, I feel as though those are symptoms of the infection taking hold of his body and mind. Thereby, he ends up tangling a few threads in his head.

      I thought it was very obvious. This guy missed the ball on that one.
      Also, Truth had doubts about humanity because they apparently didn't become gods, so he kept that detail a secret until he could come up with an explaination as to why that happened because knowing that humans were left behind with no reason would've broken the Covenant, because then it meant godhood was random and their faith didn't matter. In Halo 3 he finally comes to the conclusion that humans "were weak, and gods must be strong". Finally clearing that out of his head and being confident that the Covenant will ascend, because they're strong.
      He never stopped believing in the Great Journey, he just needed to understand why humans were the only exception.

    My headcanon is that Truth originally believed in the promise of the great journey, but when he discovered the Truth™ about the rings, he schemed a plan to still "become a God." So he killed the other Prophets, sought out the Ark, and intended on cleansing the Galaxy of all life other than those loyal to him. I'd call that an ascension to Godhood.

    I think he basically found out in halo 2 from guilty spark that the rings would actually kill them and that humans were the true successors and he didn't wanna lose his power so he continued preaching the same old story. By the end of halo 3 he's broken because everything he's ever believed in is actually completely false. He admits it to Johnson just because he had to get it out (notice how he gets closer so the others don't hear) and when he delivers the I see why they left you behind line he's talking publicly so he had to maintain the façade of the preacher. (Though he slipped up referring to how humans were left behind which he found out with mendicant bias) When hes being killed by the flood he's completely out of it. Originally in the Halo trilogy, the story intended to have humanity AS the original forerunners. It was later retconned and explained as glyph misinterpretation for the later entries.
    To elaborate:
    It was going to explain the reason why forerunner technology responded to human touch and Guilty spark referring to chief as a reclaimer. As well as justify the covenants war on humanity. However when they changed the writing to have the forerunners be their own race, they had to do some re writes while leaving in old contradictory lines.
    In regards to Truth:
    I’m sure originally he truly believe in the great journey. Once he learned the truth about Humanity being the rightful heirs to all forerunner tech and found himself in a position of supreme power, he made all of his decisions following this to keep power. If humanity found out that all forerunner tech was rightfully theirs, and would work for them no hassle. Then humanity would very quickly reach a level of power and influence that would surpass truth and his covenant. Truth is trying to cover his ass constantly for years. This no doubt took a toll on his mental and physical well being.

    I think once Truth got to the Arc he learned of the Halos true purpose and the revelation either sent him into complete insanity or, what I think is more probable, he realized that he could fire the halos and kill all of his enemies in the halos range, then kill the remaining UNSC and elite forces in the ark. After doing this he would proclaim to his remaining followers that he learned he that all who survived the firing would need to wait for death to achieve god-hood in the afterlife. With this he would use the same genetic engineering that the rest of the prophets used to make himself immortal and become the eternal ruler of the galaxy. But once he got infected by the flood he became delirious and that’s why he started to shout his speech’s of god-hood and being the voice of the covenant even though everyone around him knew the truth.

  • @shreksnow1918
    @shreksnow1918 2 місяці тому +2

    In Halo 2’s original ending Truth also planned to wipe the slate clean, but it was for a very different reason from what we’d eventually get. The Ark (later changed to the portal to the Ark in 3) has a “Forerunner” skeleton inside this sarcophagus located in the Data Vault that acted as a template for the Ark’s machinery to use as a reference when they guided the evolution of indigenous life along a desired path. Truth’s plan was to stay safe beneath the Ark’s shield as the Rings killed everything, then he’d enter the sarcophagus and have the Ark create a new species based on his genome becoming God that way (the Forerunner who activated the Array some 100,000 years ago when Forerunners disappeared from the galactic scene and modern humans first emerged in East Africa was implied to be the Abrahamic god. The more mythical Bible stories like Noah building an Ark to safe life from a coming Flood, and God creating man in his image were recontextualized as symbolic representations of Forerunner history and apes being molded into a new species who would Reclaim(er) the Forerunner’s legacy if they failed to defeat the Flood by any means other than the Rings). In a way the Great Journey was very real, but only ONE could walk it. Thats why he caused the Great Schism and had the other two hierarchs killed off. He wanted to eliminate competition to ensure the reseeding process would use him as a base, and a civil war would’ve insured the Covenant were far too distracted with a civil war to figure out what he was doing. Also, the reason he didn’t care about his species potentially going extinct, the fall of his empire, and the Flood potentially causing yet another galactic outbreak is because none of that would’ve mattered anyways once he activated the Rings.
    The confrontation between Truth and Arbiter would’ve been much better than what we got in 3 once it was revealed Truth knew all along that he was leading everyone to slaughter. The Arbiter would’ve removed his helmet and threw it on the ground rejecting the title that Truth originally gave him. Then after Truth was dead Arbiter and Guilty Spark would’ve entered the Data Vault where they’d see that Forerunners were ancient humans, and was the whole reason for the Human Covenant War. Now that would’ve been an INSANE ending! Too bad Halo 3’s story was atrocious with downgrade ld versions of Truth an Miranda, the Arbiter was reduced to a side character, the big reveal wasn’t as impactful with Spark telling you instead of actually seeing it, and aside from a few cool moments not much of substance happens. The absence of Jason Jones and Joseph Staten really shows. The “plot” barely even connects and is pretty vacuous.

He convinced himself that his life’s work, his entire religion, and all the backstabs and dirty deals he did to work his way to the top weren’t all for a lie, and that he would become a god like was promised to him. It’s important to keep in mind that when Halo 2 was made, Humans and Forerunners were the same species. That is why Mercy said, “you will not be left behind.” He meant to say that all humans would ascend when the Halos were activated.
    But when Halo 3 was being developed, Bungie changed their minds and made the Forerunners and Humans separate species. This explains why Truth said several conflicting lines during Halo 3. It’s likely that Bungie didn’t realize there were contradictions when the game was in development.

    • @nagger8216
      @nagger8216 10 місяців тому

      That's not accurate at all, Bungie was still firmly in the "humans are Forerunner" camp all the way through the series. In Contact Harvest, a book that came out *after* Halo 3, Mendicant Bias flat out tells the Prophets "My makers are my masters. I will lead them safely to the Ark." when the Covenant discovered humanity. Hell, Truth even mentions the same thing Mercy did to Johnson in Halo 3, "Your forefathers wisely set aside their compassion, steeled themselves for what needed to be done. I see now why they left you behind." This isn't even mentioning the Gravemind, who calls Chief a "child of my enemy" or Guilty Spark that straight up yelled "You ARE Forerunner!" to Chief's face. A few text logs that weren't even written by the same people writing the rest of the game doesn't matter compared to the countless lines of dialogue we actually hear the characters say.

    My personal head canon is that Truth did know what the Halo were capable off. When he says lines about becoming a god, I interoperable as him becoming eternal like the Forerunners. After the rings were fired, the Forerunners became legendary and were worshiped by the Covenant, unknowing of the horrible things they did. The same goes for Truth, if he did fire the array, the galaxy would be wiped clean, and Truth would eventually die of natural causes. However, his story would then be told after his death, making him happy mortal in a way. Truth wants to leave his hand mark on the universe the same way the forerunners did.

      Fixing some weird auto correct bs. Instead of ‘interoperable’ I meant interpret’, and when it says ‘happy mortal’ I meant ‘immortal’

    TLDR: Bungie completely messed up truth in halo 3 and it’s bad writing. I think its pretty clear he DOES NOT know what halo actually does, because in halo 2 he tried to get Tartarus to fire the rings, when the prophets aren’t on the ark, if he knew the reality he definitely wouldn’t order delta halo to be fired. The whole things is badly thought out, they really need to go into depth on truths psychology, because he is a walking contradiction. He also knows humanity are the true reclaimers so his quest to wipe them all out would suggest he’s only concerned about maintaining his power as he doesn’t want the covenant to collapse, but then when he tries to activate the halos it seems like the genuinely believes they will transcend the covenant to godhood, but if he spent half his life trying to wipe out the true reclaimers then that would indicate he doesn’t take the religion that seriously, because if he did he wouldn’t keep secrets and literally try and wipe out the his religions true heirs. None of it makes sense

    I think I MAY have figured out the answer. The Ark is 2^18th light years from the milky ways galactic center, beyond the rim even. The seven Halos range, from what I understand, only encompass the galaxy, not any further. Truth planned to seek refuge on the Ark, killing everyone else left inside the galaxy so he could “become a god” forge the whole world in his own way. If this is a take that has been debunked, or if I’m missing something, let me know. Because otherwise I think I figured it out

    your conclusion is off I think. You played the lines out of order and out of context. When he says what the halo rings actually do he's saying it in whisper to the humans. When he's acting like he doesn't know it's loud and when other covenant are listenting. I don't think he was just merely insane... of course he was in a way. But he knew what he was doing.
    I think when he talked about being a god he already believed that he was some sort of god. it's like those cult leaders who get hoards of people to kill themselves.. thinking he's a god of some kind, but he's just a power-crazed tyrant

    Truth is like Jim Jones, with a lot of cognitive dissonance mixed in.
    What we know of him:
    -> He's power hungry. He rose to power with the other three prophets when they discovered that humans were the true reclaimers and that their faith was wrong, silencing the truth (ironic) and launching his war against the humans to hide it once and for all. He also profited from Regret's death and replaced the question asking Sangheili for the blindly loyal brutes.
    -> His power is based in a theocracy. Even though he knows their faith is wrong, he cannot accept it to be destroyed so he clings to power and the only way for him to maintain that power is to convince himself that he is right.
    -> He's ruthless. He doesn't care if his colleague Mercy is hit by a flood infection form. He stops Tartarus from saving him. He's ready to genocide the Sangheili just because they aren't as blindly loyal as the Brutes.
    So yeah. He doesn't care about exterminating every last sentient being in the Galaxy if that means he gets to hold his power a little bit longer. The cognitive dissonance hits him hard and causes him to, at one time, rationalize the act of killing every one in the Galaxy as an act of purification and that only those of whom he chose will survive, making him the ultimate ruler of the Galaxy. At other times, he can't just pretend to believe the stuff he tells the Covenant so he actually believes it. Because at times, it becomes the only way for him to justify what he's doing in his head so he convinces himself that his belief is true even though he knows it to be false. And by doing that, he doesn't even care if he's leading a galactic scale mass cult suicide.

    It’s like going to Valhalla. Going to the divine beyond through death. If you die the right way (aka via the Halo array or glorious combat) you visit the Gods.
    Truth himself wanted to do this, but no one would aid him if he told them he was going to commit galactic genocide in the process. So he promised a lie that all the others would ascend as well, and that this is the proper way to go, the true way of things. He doesn’t know for a fact if everyone will ascend alongside him, maybe they won’t because they are lesser. But heartedly believes that at least himself will ascend through this suicide.

    In truth I think the writing was all over the place, like how bungie originally couldn't decide if forerunners were ancient humans or something else. I would like to think he new what they were for, would use the ark to reseed the galaxy in "his image"... and the religious talk was for dramatics/manipulation in front of his brute guard all the way till his final moments before the Arbiter, desperate to tug at any remaining faith he might have. After all his words were *Lies for the weak, beacons for the deluded.*

    Maybe the prophets knew of the halo's destructive capabilities, but their religion told them that dying in that way was the path to their equivalent of heaven, so killing everyone by activating the rings would place anyone seen as 'worthy' in their heaven

    I think by Halo 3’s end he’s gone off the deep end, and he’s just activating the rings out of spite to ensure that even if he loses, so does everyone else.

    He was blinded by his faith and did his best to reconcile what the oracle said with what he wanted to be true. That was his job as a prophet anyways: to interpret the lords' creations for the rest of the believers. At least that's how I think about it.
