I'm excited to talk about these Winspace hypers wheels! Are they the real deal or just a bunch of "hype"? Well, I'll be darned if I don't find out.
I'm talking trueness checks, spoke checks, and even watching those ceramic bearings spin. I mean, who needs Netflix when you've got these wheels to stare at, am I right? (Probably not but I'm I don't think I'm normal 😂)
I can't wait to put these babies to the test, but let's be real here - these wheels are for probably going to be for Sunday best only. I'm talking about pristine roads, not a speck of dirt or grime in sight.
So, to answer the question at hand, are these wheels all "hype" or the real deal? Well, let's just say I have high hopes but I'm also a realist. Regardless of how these wheels turn out... I'll be sure you keep you all in the loop!
PS. When I provide a link here to gear or equipment I sometimes get a kickback from it. But I NEVER link to something that I haven't used or did use and didn't like! 👍 - Спорт
I made a mistake in the video, Side runout is 0,1 mm not 0,9mm as I said in the video! Thanks to everyone who commented 👍🏽
To put this in perspective for folks that aren't familiar with such measurements, 0.1 mm is 0.0039 inches, or 3.9 thousanths of an inch. A standard piece of printer paper is around 4 thousanths of an inch thick.
@@BikePappyToo In other words, 1mm= 1/314th the wing span of Americal bald eagle or 1/24th the diameter of a Big Mac cheeseburger
@@shikharb6501 Hmmmmm. I can’t quite figure out your point here but you’ve clearly never seen a Big Mac or an American Bald Eagle. Your measurements are way off.
I never thought much of Hyper wheels, I was on the verge of getting Hunt's Aerodynamicist 54 wheels with carbon spokes. The thought of carbon spokes scared me, so I opted for ENVE Foundation 65 instead, and got them for around $1,000. I'm gonna call that a win.
Take a guess at who makes the hunts
Just seen your video, i think your dti readings are a factor of 10 out at one point. Also note the park tool tm1 reading for kgf is not comparable here as the spoke material is not calibrated to the tm1. So although it will draw you the graph it won't actually know the kgf in each spoke.
Thanks for highlighting! 👍🏽
Top advice here. Great to see fellow UA-camr's helping each other out.
I check every set of Hypers when they come in, using that same tool. As stated, the units mean nothing but it's still a useful exercise to check tension consistency across all spokes. Over time, I've built a record of what every rim depth variation should be, DS and NDS, as a means of catching anything that's out of whack. I've never had a single spoke that needed any tweaking upon arrival. (I have a lot of faith in Winspace QC. I mostly do this check to catch anything damaged in transit.)
The amount of work you put to create this content is really appreciated! Cheers!
Glad you enjoy it! I spend way too much time editing these days 😂
@@JourdainColeman i enjoy your videos!!!!!!! Keep it up man, very informative I hope you gain more followers this year
I upgraded a damaged rear wheel (door hit the carbon wheel and cracked it) from the old Hyper 50mm three years ago to the new Hyper SE23 D67. Damn it, these wheels are faster and more responsive they the older model. (I have replaced boththe old and new set with bearings with NTN LLB and used fluro grease) I also balanced the wheel and have never seen a wheel so balanced. I only needed to add one small strip of lead weight. As I was using tubeless, the wheel seemed even easier to put on a GP5000STR. Well done Winspace!
I've been riding these wheels for over 5yrs and have 1,000 miles on current set and they are awesome wheels. I'm on a tight budget, but when I can still win my races in my age category with guys riding bikes and wheels 4X's more expensive, it says a lot.
I have a set of Winspace Hyper 50 (not the 2023 version) on my Trek Domane. Those wheels plus switching to a set pair of Conti GP5000 setup tubeless were such a solid upgrade, saved a heap of weight and they are great to ride on compared to the stock aluminium wheels/tires/tubes it came with.
Why would you install wheels on trek domain? That's like such a cheap bike it's not even worth upgrading anything on that bike.
Nice video, thanks! Will be interesting to see how you find these!
Hopefully they spin like a dream on the road
got the hyper 2020 wheelset; awesome wheels still true, light and fast and they only cost me $1000.00 including shipping. to save 5 seconds i don't need 3k wheels. A winner all around.
Very cool Video and especially a cool videostile with the edits 👌
Thank you 🙌
@@JourdainColeman You're welcome!
I read an engineering analysis about ceramic bearings. The conclusion was that they are predominantly intended for industrial machines that run at very high rpm. In other words to achieve the drag benefits from ceramic bearings you need to hit rpms much higher than you can achieve from a road bike wheel. They will still be very smooth but you can get smooth non ceramic bearings for a much cheaper price.
So I need to ride at 100mph?? 😂
@@JourdainColeman i’m a bit of an anorak when it comes to bearings. When i’m assessing a new set of wheels i pay less attention to the weight and more attention to the quality of the bearings that the manufacturer has fitted.
Interestingly they use ceramic on some highend phono turntables 33, 45 78 rpm
@@vintageaudioworkshop thanks, I didn’t know. Would that be considered marginal gains for turntables?
I'm thinking of putting these wheels on my 21 speed giant shopping bike , do you think it would be overkill ?.
Cracking content as always nice of bigger brands to start and send you stuff to test 👌who about running these with the tpu tubes the green cyclima or the ride now tubes instead of tubeless 🤔
Yeah, it is nice isn't it! 😂 - The channel is growing so I can bring you guys more content. I'm not to sure how I'll setup these wheels. I had orginally htought tubeless would be the direction I would go 👍🏽
@@JourdainColeman less weight in tpu tubes tho all about the weight these day 😂😂
I would actually love to see how they perform against the FSA Vision Team 35s. That would be great!
200$ wheelset versus a 1300$ wheelset. How much speed do you actually pay for...
I put these on my bike (65mm rim brake version), initially coming from Vision SC 40's I was dissapointed because I didn't feel much difference... until I cranked it up to higher power numbers... very happy with their performance at higher speeds and the responsiveness when coming out the saddle out of corners. definitely a step up from the Vision's
Thanks for the info, I'll keep that in mind when I give these wheels a try 👌🏼
You're the Professor Brian Cox of the bike world 😂. A few more tools and you can service everyone's bike 👌. Very interesting video, personally I just want to know how cool they look on the bike 👀😜
I'll take that! Shall I start presenting like him as well, Scott... slow hand movments and elongated words. Every video will be about 40 mins long haha
I can't wait to see them on the bike as well. It should be getting built tomorrow so I'l have plenty of build videos in the coming weeks 👍🏽
They way your are using the dial indicators is not correct. You are not getting any measurement at all. At 5:51 your dial indicator tip is zeroed on the high spots, scratching them. But not measuring anything below those high spots, because those spots are not touched by the indicator. You have to set up your indicator so that it is fully engaged (full contact) with the wheel for a full revolution. Then you can zero it on a random spot and check the deviation on a full revolution by turning the wheel by hand slowly.
You should do this whole thing as a new video. (I am a machinist, no hate my friend) :)
Edit: The setup at 6:14 is a little bit better because the indicator has contact to the rim on like 80% of the diameter. But every time the needle comes to a sudden stop, it is not engaged, therefore not measuring anything. The indicator has to be fully engaged at all times.
Of course. The gauge must be engaged for the full rotation. I typically ensure one full rotation of the dial indicator at the lowest point and measure from there . A good wheel is classed as upto 0.2mm lateral and 0.5mm radial run-out. And max 1mm dishing.
Thanks @dancingMachine, what you have said makes perfect sense to me! 👌🏼 I'll be sure to improve my technique for the next set of wheels that I have. Also, thanks for commenting, I actually appreciate this type of positive feedback so I can improve the videos going forward. 👍🏽
@@JourdainColeman No worries. Thanks for the content!
I have a pair. Im 220 lbs. They are wonderfull, i own cosmics, rovals, irwin, and hypers. Im going to say they feel like the rovals. Get them now before the demand goes up and you pay more.
I have the latest ceramic hub 60/67 and they are flyers Jourdain!
Good to hear, I look forward to giving them a good blast!
I think we should saw them in half to see what's inside :)
Do they produce MATTE BLACK UD?
Maybe some brand like Elite Wheels run better than big brand. Im change from Prime carbon wheels to Edge of Elite Wheels and feel better much more than last x3 price wheels im used.
The AI doesn't appear to have contemplated two things - 1. what happens if a spoke fails; catastrophic with carbon, not so with traditional alloy spokes, and 2. areas of strength; laterally the carbon will be much weaker than alloy, increasing the risk of failure. They are hella light and kinda pretty though!
the sound of the rim on the metal when you checked for roundness was truly painful, next time please use the pointy tips of the arms that are also used to see the side to side trueness. you should be able to get them close enough to put them where you can see the roundness of the wheel :)
these dials are meant to be pushed against the wheel so see if the wheel is out of true to both sides, you should be able to turn the indication (the thing where the numbers are printed on) to get ne needle to point at 0, so its easyier to see to which side you have a deflection.
nicer truing stands have little wheels on the end of these dials so they arent scraping, but rather rolling on the side of the rim :)
hope that helps, thanks for the video!
Thanks for pointing this out to him. I cringed too at the screeching sound I hope he didn’t scratch the rims. Those dial indicators have replaceable tips there are roller tips on Ali or ebay available. For roundness I use a flat tip. This setup is reasonably good once you learn to use it properly much better what you get from park at that price.
Hi , is the park tool calculator an app or website?
It's a website, here is the link - www.parktool.com/en-int/wta
Hello, when are you releasing the ride review? Thanks
Once I have put some miles on these wheels the review will be released 👍🏽
I would better buy pair of ican's aeros with cx ray spokes and same weight. And the coast about 700eur with discount)
are they center-lock or 6 bolt for rotors? Winspace's own page doesn't say so...
All Winspace disc brake hubs use a Centerlock interface.
Any idea what type of bearings are in them? Are they a standard cartridge bearing?
I believe they are ceramic cartridge bearings 👍🏽
They run on S&S hybrid ceramic radial bearings using two bearing sizes: 6803 and 6903.
So we tested these carbon spokes and they were able to hold 300kg of tension. Which is double of what steel spokes are capable of. Nice!
But there's also a question of longevity. Epoxy, that holds carbon together, hates vibrations, uv light, and any form of torsion. Which is exactly what spokes are experiencing all the time.
i want these rims with chris king hubs.
I have only one question. Are the hubs still as loud as they were in older versions?
no, they are not that loud.
No , definitely not
They sound pretty quiet to me 👌🏼
@@JourdainColeman Wow. Really? That would be great.
@@JourdainColeman The grease that comes pre-applied feels sticky to the touch and from what I remember, it's not a thin film of it, so this is what contributed to the lower noise.
Got about 4600km on the previous hypers- not a hint of deviation from true. New ones have delt with a few of the issues of the gen1 such as spoke rotation but they are great. BUT they are sooo stiff- you do feel more bumps than the steel spoke wheels.
Compliance is not one of the HYPER's strong points.
Thanks for the info, I can't wait to give them a try!
Hell yeah. 13 000 km on my Gen1, as perfect as brand new. But yeah, stiff they are.
Side runout is 0,1 mm not 0,9mm
😉 seems pretty good to me
👍🏽 - Thanks for flagging
@@JourdainColeman sorry I am a Engineer
My Hyper 68 Rim are on the way from china looking forward to get them 😉
Nice video 👍
@@MieseType1985 It's helpful when people point these things out 👍🏽 - I hope your Hypers serve you well!!
They didnt sent you a handpicked wheelset right? Right? A random purchase would be more closer to the truth. Great video anyway!
they are shockingly good wheels for the money comparative the the bigger brands.
In terms of performance, yes, but at the cost of compliance.
Maybe Chinese as well but Scribe, Hunt, Parcour etc I would feel more comfortable with cheaper and maybe better protected if things go wrong. Although these are probably good for most people .
I run GP5000’s on my Hyper 50 and they are a pain in the ass remove from these wheels.😂
Same, I'm ordering a Rehook Tyre Tool because I dread running a flat with these using regular levers. But other than that the Hypers have done me well over 6000km so far.
I feel like GP 5000 are hard to get on most wheels these days. If the wheel is tubeless compatible and then that seem to make everything tighter from my experience.
Scribe wheels if was buying 🤣👌🏻
I have a pair of 2020 Hyper wheels. They are awesome, so good I decided to try other Chinese wheels. I purchased the Elite- wheels Drive 50's. They are better than the Hypers. They hold speed well, and going up hills is a breeze due to the 1300 grams total weight.
Thanks for sharing! Good to know people have had good experiences
Carbon Carbon Carbon
Carbon spokes:
ua-cam.com/video/TPcm7-KvytI/v-deo.html
👀 - Let's see how I get on
As much as I like and respect the Francis and Jimmi show, that video is a tad misleading. Those wheels by Lightweight are constructed with the spokes as an integral part of the wheel/hub assembly. The spokes are not like a traditional spoke. The LUN Hyper wheelset uses a carbon spoke that is a traditional design and can be replaced just like any other spoke. In fact, as shown, you receive spare spokes in the box with the wheels.
I DONT HAVE THAT TIRE LEVER IN THE BAG!😭
🙃
Earlier batches don't have them.
You made a mistake, If least count is 0.01mm, 10 deviations are 0.1mm. Which means the trueness is 0.09mm or 90 microns
On road bikes I think it's ok....
But I'm worried it will Explode.
High PSI + heat bad for carbon
As long as the rims are allowed to cool from time to time, they shouldn't blow up easily. This is also why people are told not to drag their brakes. Hard brake, release, repeat.
Have theese got to the road yet ? 😁
They have, full review video coming soon!
carbon does not expand like metal ones. They are the wrong material for bike spokes.
2 years owning these wheels (Hyper 50) and the rear wheel has required trueing every few months...I'm 65kg, roads are smooth around here... wheels are just not that great to be honest.
To add more data points to this purely anecdotal evidence-I m close to 90 kg, riding the first gen on shitty roads, more than 13000 km, never needed trueing.
I'm 99kg, I've had them for 2 years. Still smooth and trued.
My bike didn’t cost that much 😢
I have purchased two sets with a promotion Winspace had. Asked to exchange to a disc version from a rim brake model, same price and I would paying shipping to return and ship identical exchange and they said no. Never again. Horrible customer service.
Most brands wouldn’t allow this
Duraace wheelset 10s faster than entry level wheels that come with bike purchase.
Winspace hyper wheels probably better than Duraace wheelset.
If someone give me free 3000usd wheels, I will sell it and buy winspace hyper wheels, rest of the money, save for tyres, bearings upgrade & other maintainance.
Good unless you plan to run wider then 25 mm tires
😂😂😂😂 I am running 28 and 30, no problem
The zipper on the bag they give you is absolute ass. Thanfully, the wheelset is great.
Good to hear the wheels are good 👌🏼
Hella good wheels but be warned-these are STIFFF….On shitty roads and high tyre pressure steel spokes are much better.
Next video: He's gonna cut them in half.
Great video and I love your channel, but I really think you should change your yt profile pic. All I can think about is 'soy face'' when I see it. Please don't be offended.
Ton freehub drag on my rear wheel even after breaking my wheels in. Kind of crap quality to be honest, no better than Ican.
Your digital caliper may be not a precise measurement tool. Better ones made of metal, yours looks like made of plastic
Metal coated in black I would say.
Good point.. I'll have a look at a metal one as an upgrade 👍🏽
