Truly a great movie, showing s what real courage is ... an entire village, men and women ready to give their lives down to the last one to chase away the ennemy.

I watched this movie when it first came out on HBO, over and over and over again. My dad was a US Army Green Beret and served during the Vietnam War. He watched the movie with me one time. My dad laughed his butt off when that scene of San Neil putting that guy out of his misery! He was adamant that would never happen. He did tell me with a wink and a nod, that if the guy Sam Neil put out of his misery was an enemy, that it might be realistic.
I was in cold war Germany in 1978-1980, and I see stuff that is laughable too. Deep cover jungle recovery mission, and they dont even have face paint on or camo. And of course shooting one of their own. That makes for great morale in the unit. When they first get there and the guy throws Mel his ruck, and 2 minutes later he walks down and joins them. And some have bush hats, and Mel and another have berets, and one with no headgear. And were silencers that well developed in 1940-ish? Hell were they even that good in 1981? I'm only 28 minutes in and just getting started.
In 1981 I was in he army in Spain. Green Berets. In regimiento Mila, founded in Milan, Italia, in 1535. We had this... We had that type of uniforms and weapons. There were no drones, no remote-controlled bombs. The work was done by hand: you had to approach the enemy during the night without being seen and put him out of combat. For the Spanish, that means capturing the enemy or forcing them to surrender. What times....
@111222333daniel In the 90s, the UK and Spanish military had the worst service rifled ever issued to a Western Army (SA80 and CETME L) Uncle/Tio H&K had to sort it out 🤣🤣
A movie with an interesting backstory. For a start, it was filmed in Taiwan and there was some friction between the actors after the director was changed. The story of the making of the movie is told in a Formosa Files podcast episode (S3-E2). I enjoyed the movie - seeing a young Mel Gibson and Sam Neill - and trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to recognize filming locations; well, except for the very end of the story. I won't give anything away but will just say - be prepared for a non-Hollywood ending.
After the Japanese were defeated in 1945, in Indonesia there was a popular rebellion against the Dutch Colonial Government, which re-armed the Japanese POWs and employed them to forcibly put down the rebellion. WW2 was one Fascist empire versus another.

Fog of war, things go wrong. Gotta give respect that they didn't leave that out to save face. The Z president said it was unflinching account. You know when a "WW11" movie starts out with a 1980 nuclear submarine on the surface and diving after disembarking a team of commandos, it kind of spoils the whole thing. And the weapons were vintage, all right. With 1980 suppressors. Allegedly in 1940something. Awfully over-acted. Sadly, I shut it off after 5:48. Gotta do waaaay better than that boys.
