Nice catch, cook, and eat to end the morning. That was very generous of those gentlemen in the beginning to offer you all those crabs. Well done and thank you PK! Dungeness are way better tasting than the blue crabs we have here, but we love catching those too. 🥰
You can also make a Cioppino out of the crab, and it’ll feed everyone hearty. Whole Foods Market sells a Cioppino base already made in a jar, whereby all you do is add your seafood mix, cook to heat up, and serve with a bread 🥖 or what have you. Enjoy! This always hits the spot for me 😃👍🏼
PK great to see you again! I hope your health issues are behind you! Long time follower, years, you have taught me so much!!! I can’t thank you enough! God Bless you and your family!
I’m so happy watching this video. It’s great to see you again and with your family and friends. I’m amazed that you’re able to drive up to Oregon so often. That’s a long drive. I’m jealous. I’m so hungry watching this. Stay well 💕
Thanks for your crabbing videos. I really enjoy them. Also appreciate the advice and gear testing information. Keep up the great work! I'm looking forward to my first trip this fall/early winter on the coast.
Yea during this time there a lot of females crabs. I’m waiting for late August or September to starting going out again. My little family love crabbing out there and this other place
PK good to see ya out here again! i was in waldport last week. i definitely gotta try to do those castable traps. we used hoop nets out at garibaldi & coos bay (charleston). got 3 limits of red.....but only 6 keeper dungeness. can't wait for the next trip!
I've been following your videos for years. It BLEW MY MIND to see you crabbing from my regular spot! I started watching your surf perch fishing videos and got hooked (pun intended) when I was living in Portland before building my house in Waldport! But, to see you crabbing in what is now my backyard - shocking! I walk to that spot from my house in less than two minutes. A DEEP trough runs through there when the tide switches out. If you want to keep your snare in one spot in that location, I suggest a weight for your snare. The last time I went, I used a 4oz weight in conjunction with the weight of my chicken to catch. I know adding that kind of weight to a rod a reel setup is a tall ask. I invented something I call the "crabuchet" a couple of seasons ago. Gets your bait out as far as a rod and I stick with the nylon line to pull the traps back in! Loads of fun. Next time you come this way, PLEASE let me know. My crabbing buddy and I will meet you there and show you how we do it from the shoreline. I just bought a seven cubic foot freezer to hold what we plan on catching this season. Tight lines!
@@ryefry I'm in Bayshore (Waldport). There's a long section of beach close to where the Alsea Bay opens up. It's a good place to go but if you use salmon or tuna heads, bring heavy gear. The harbor seals will rip it to shreds. I've also recently seen sea lions playing around that area too. You WILL spend lots of bait on female crab here though. FYI. It's not great for crabbing there now - but soon. Hope that helps. I see TONS of people crabbing off the back of the Alsi Bay Resort Hotel every late summer. People do so well there they bring overhead tents for shade and they catch and cook there all day.
What’s your method for freezing them? I’ve tried vacuuming halves and, alternatively, picking out the meat and freezing just the meat. What have found that works best?
@@drtmvoss To be honest, after I boil them, I'll use a meat tenderizer mallet to (lightly - with the crab halves under a kitchen towel) pound the joints and legs. I freeze them after that. When I want crab the shell falls away as they thaw. I rinse the meat free of shell bits and it's ready to eat. I also like to kill the crab then place them whole on my grill. It seems to intensify the sweetness and makes the shells brittle and easy to clean.
Woohoo! Welcome to wonderful Waldport! Is that a private beach? . The only time I do well crabbing in Alsea Bay is when I take a boat and drop the pots for a long soak. . Is demonstrating backing the crabs a demonetizing offense?
Go down to Newport Bay. Fish for the red rock crab and also the dungeoness. Together they make the absolute best crab cakes……the sweet meat of the red rock and the rich dungeoness crab meat. Gives me wood thinking about it. Food wood that is. YUM
I could be wrong but it’s possible that you keep catching the same crab because you let them go back where you cast. I would have moved down the beach or released them far away from where I got them.
I watch most the crabbing videos that come up. What I notice is there are a lot of undersize crabs in your area? Lot of them though! Do you think it has anything to do with the open season? Where did you purchase the rod you use? I'm looking for a 13 foot medium rod for crab snaring. I have some heavy snares I made for different beaches that have big waves and heavy rip tides. I use 50 lb brade but thinking of going to 80 this season for when I go to the beaches.
Undersize is normal. You find that anywhere you go. But when you catch mostly females, that is a true indication of over-pressure. I noticed that with most bays I crab here in Oregon. I got the rods on Amazon. And I use 80# braid, I think you can get away with 50# if you're using snares, but I use crab hawks which creates a lot of drag so that's why the 80#.
I’ve been watching your videos for quite some time. This is what got me interested in Dungeness crabs you used to have a gentleman named LYNN that went with you a lot, but I never see him anymore. Whatever happened with LYNN
He is still around, and we talk all the time. Due to distance, and me not having my boat anymore, it was just a logistical issue. But I hope to have him back soon again.
Just went out Saturday. Load of females. However we ended up with 60 keepers out of 8 pots. Loads of nice females though. They just finished mating. The males should be on their way.
I use the Ugly Stick Tiger with an 80a Okuma Ignite reel and 80lb braided... Works fantastic! I have 2nd pole (Ugly Stick Tiger) but don't have the right size reel for it. Can't afford a new reel with the current economic nonsense and being disabled... Thanks Brandon! 🤬 Lol #TightLines 👍🍻
Dude all I catch is females 😆 it’s so annoying, even in the surf at seaside fishing for perch beach every weekend not one single male 🙄 they to smart for me I guess lol
Seaside and Florence just aren't very productive areas for shore/dock crabbing. I have much better luck in Yaquina bay. My Grandparents always went to Alsea Bay (Waldport). Bandon has decent crabbing. Tillamook Bay has good crabbing.
Breakfast of champions!

Nice to see you back and after the Crabs !
I need to visit Oregon 😍
Great to see you out again PK.
Thanks for the video…watching from the upper peninsula of Michigan…stay safe and take care !!

Thanks for inviting me! It was an awesome time!
The boat advantage is real
Lol. You mean you get more crabs when there aren't 20 other people dropping pots right next to yours? Not a fan of combat crabbing?
Your hair is bad azz! Love it!!!! 👍👍
PK, busting out some more awesome videos!
Always great videos very informative and always fun to watch. I'm gonna head down tomorrow n throw my pots in and see if I can have your luck 😁

Great to see you back at it PK. Been missing your videos!!
Nice video and super nice looking sea food platters!!
Hey I love your videos. Live in Oregon and me and my dad have been taking your hunting advice. Keep uploading

What a fun time, never thought about tossin' those traps at the beach!
if u do it on the ocean, use lead wts, it would have helped us in the bay but ocean currents are much worse.

What beach is this? I'm in Forest Grove, would love to get out crabbing again that isn't the Garibaldi Pier.

Here in CA I went to a location similar to this and it all females too. I think these calm places are the hatching grounds.
Yeeee

I’m moving to Oregon in October. What are some good locations for a newbie to crab and clam? I’ve been doing my homework watching your videos
Join the Oregon Crabbing facebook club. There are tons of places to crab and October will be prime catching time.

Lousy luck today. All the big boys went on strike.
Good stuff buddy, miss seeing you my guy! I lost my numbers so give me a text if you wanna do something sometime!

May I ask what estuary that is?
That's funny. "In Oregon, you can't keep a female" So true...
Everyones been missing out on the jalapeno cheddar i feel like. Im the only one i know that buys them for some reason
i was skeptical but they were awesome!
which bay is this at??
Alsea Bay.
