Before anything, yes this is a late tribute to someone who shouldn’t be kept waiting. It’s officially been a year since the classical era won me over with its charm, personality, films, and players, and I would consider Marlene Dietrich to be a key player in shaping classical film, with her (then) controversial roles in both the Blue Angel (1930) and Morocco (1930), her sultry and exotic persona (such as in films like Shanghai Express (1932), The Devil is a Woman (1935), Desire (1936), and Angel (1937)), her spontaneously dry wit (The Flame of New Orleans (1941), The Lady is Willing (1942), and A Foreign Affair (1948)), and her unique singing voice (Destry Rides Again (1939), Seven Sinners (1940), Witness for the Prosecution (1957)), and her overall “star quality”, which is obviously lacking in today’s film industry.
For the most part she has been marketed as “Paramount’s answer to MGM’s Swedish superstar Greta Garbo”, and while I do believe both actresses were amazing in their own right, Marlene always wins the show for me haha.
I wanted to showcase what most accounts about Dietrich, say, which is essentially that she was obsessed with keeping the youthful allure of “Marlene Dietrich”. After the war, she still participated in films, sometimes because she needed the money, sometimes because she was asked by directors whom she considered friends. Throughout that specific timeline, 1947 - 1957, Marlene wanted to look like her 1935 self (re: The Devil is a Woman is her favourite film as it was a version of herself she considered the most beautiful) and underwent extensive forms of surgery in order to at least achieve a portion of what had been her “glory days”.
Young and Beautiful, I felt, was quite fitting for this type of narrative, as it helps give a retrospect of Marlene’s filmography; although most of her talkies are present in this edit, there are three that I failed to include as I have no copy of it to edit (The Lady is Willing, Pittsburgh, and Martin Rougmanac) but oh well, I am sort of proud of this nonetheless.
This was meant to have been uploaded on the 27th of December (Marlene’s birthday), but I went on a vacation and wasn’t able to bring my laptop! Sorry!!
I do hope you enjoy this, even if it isn’t the best tribute ever, it is what I would give to Marlene on her very special day! If I could recommend any of her films, I would suggest A Foreign Affair (1948), Destry Rides Again (1939), Morocco (1930), The Devil is a Woman (1935), Desire (1936), Golden Earrings (1947), and Witness for the Prosecution (1957).

This is one of the greatest video tributes to any Hollywood superstar I have ever seen, the very classy, cool eyed and captivating Queen, angel goddess and diva Marlene Dietrich. Adore the orchestra instrumental of Young and Beautiful. Lana Del Rey and the golden/ silver screen age just fit perfectly together. Please do more if you can, Marlene is a true heavenly work of art, head to toe. 🤩✨🌟😍🥰😘👑💎⚜️🏆🎭🎞️🎬📸🎥📽️ 👼
