WoW, great video, I was there in 2013, lots of snow and cold but worth the trip, especially the tunnel run, lots of smoke, hope to make this trip again. Great camera work..thanks.....
A very beautiful steam loco with a stunning Western Maryland Winter as backdrop and amaZing camerawork combine for one heck of a cool video. Amazing production.
Thank you for this great video CoasterFan2105. Love all the great angles, sounds and scenery. It has also become our 3yr old son's favorite "real" train video. It is also our "go to" video for naps and bedtime.
My 2 year old grandson goes into a trance when he sees this. Try looking in You Tube for Japanese Steam, there is a great HD video of similar quality, beautifully shot....
That is a great scenic railroad. I have ridden the train a couple times and ridden my bike along the trail beside the track. I have ridden a lot of scenic trains in the US and this one ranks with the best of them.
Hi Mike, Your killing me here! I have goose bumps! I am going to Pennsylvania in March to find my great grandad's grave site. He was an engineer for a railroad in the eighteen hundreds. Also his name was James Leasure! I plan on going onto Cumberland and beyond to get some tunnel photos. Thanks again, Jim
Thank you for the comment, Jim! I don't thing the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad runs in March but if they are running something, it is definitely worth visiting. Have fun on your trip.
It did look authentic, the locomotive isn't all shiny and over-restored, there's no diesel behind it like when they run steamers on main line railroads, there weren't photographers everywhere pointing cameras, so, great job.
Quasimoto7 Yeah, I am a fairly old guy and I can remember when steam was king in the '50s. They still run several steam specials near where I live and it reminds me of the old days with the smell of coal and hot oil. I like the scenery in the video with the snow and pretty towns along the way.
Superb footage of 734 working hard through some very nice scenery Mike! There's something of a romance about American rail-road freight trains for us Brits and this well constructed video brings back a flavour of the rail-roads of yesteryear. Thanks for sharing it. Best wishes. Ken
I think it’s because we didn’t make our steam engines for one purpose. All of our steam engines are very mixed traffic. Imo, later American steam engines have more of a utilitarian, “gonna crush this hill” look to them, where as British steamers have more of a posh/high class appearance.
Nice winter scenes nice country side good long shots good to see from the back of the trains engine working hard plenty of smoke the caboose or guards van looks good nice sound effects ( good video) thanks
Great Video Mr. Mike. My son and I love to watch your videos. We live in the Baltimore area, so it was exciting to see some local action. We love your work! Keep it up! Thanks!
The scene with the train entering the tunnel at the 6:39 mark is absolutely magical! Nightmarish images and sounds if impending disaster to think of being trapped in the tunnel.
The tunnel scene is fantastic. Seeing that eerie light coming foward and hearing it chugging along is excellent. Well captured. That one alone just got you a subscriber.
I don't know if any of you heard, but #734 is going into overhaul soon. However, the Western Maryland Scenic is almost done restoring Chesapeake and Ohio #1309 and plan on getting it back in service by winter of 2018
@@SadFairlie Man, I almost forgot I made this comment all that time ago. But, yes, I’ve been keeping on top of that. With them both being Baldwin engines, if they ever run together, the volume of the chuffing is going to be something to behold.
The wheels have counterweights on them. If you look at a image of one you will see one side partially filled instead of spokes. That weight was to counter the eccentric wobble wheels would have at higher speeds, since otherwise the stress on the axles, rods and the ride of the train itself would be destructive. The consequence was that the train had a power stroke when that weight was at the top of the rotation, giving that rapid "chuff chuff" as the weight turned downwards. When the weight was being cranked to the top of the rotation, it delayed the pistons from moving as fast since more pressure was necessary to be built up in the piston, giving for the long delayed chuff. This is mostly unnoticable at steady operation, but is exaggerated when the train is moving uphill.
We have ridden the Western Maryland Scenic train several times. There is a bike path along the tracks for much of the way. I was able to video the train coming out of the tunnel.

Since wmsr 734 is now out of service awaiting a 1472 day inspection: if wmsr decides not to return to service, where would her next home be? Back to IRM? B&O railroad museum? If she does return to IRM, I'd love to see her do a trip with 1630 if the steam team decides to forgo work on her, but if she doesn't run there again she should at least be reunited with LS&I #35, her sister. OR if the cards are played right, if WMSR can't get her to the museum, then maybe IRM could bring the museum to her with 1630, a nice luxurious consist, and maybe the zephyr! But for now, let's just hope that such scenes seen here, can be created once more with the engine that traveled by truck from Chicago and highballed into infamy!
If I remember right, unfortunately I don't think the 734 will be running for a while due to a boiler inspection and overhaul. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love to see a double header at some point though
Video at 4:15, about the best you can get. Two thumbs up! Might have to stop on the way to Lorton next week and make a donation to the 1309 fund. Google says that going by the shop area it is a shorter drive than going thru Hancock, MD/Berkeley Springs, WV. :-D
Great video, although this is not an "original" WM H-7 it looks convincing. The only "real" WM steam engine in existence (other than the huge shay) is a WM "Harriman" Pacific in Hagerstown, in a park. There was talk years ago of restoring it to operating condition. Does anyone know if that is still in the works, or has that idea died?
When I was a child I was loving this video its my favorite
Me too bruh
One of my fondest train memories was riding the WMSR on a train being pulled by this beast I miss it an hope she runs again some day.
6:22: The shot in which the train enters the tunnel was amazing!
so great. the amount of smoke and steam coming out of that things is just awesome
The sounds of these old locomotives are awesome!
A steam train under power; one of the sweetest sounds in the world. Very nice vid.

I know this is late but the Western Maryland has started operating their trains in March. This is their first year doing so.

Of all the consolidations out there, 734 happens to be the one nearest and dearest to my heart.
Saw your photos in your father's examination room and was interested in seeing your videos. Only one word could describe this video, magnificent!
Well thank you very much! I appreciate it!

You picked a good day to film this project. It really captures the feel of the days of steam. Thoroughly enjoyable.

1309 returned to the rails back in December 2021, and the WM is accepting donations to possibly make 734 run again.

Why does exhaust beat sound off at 9:15?
Valve timing probably out..., sounds off beat throughout this recording.

I imagine they'll alternate to keep a steam engine operating on the premises at all times but I don't know for sure. There may be some overlap
