I go to a coffee shop that has good tea almost every day. The cashiers there know me for the most part and already know what I want when I walk in in the mornings. Before, I used to enjoy the self checkout, but having the regular community interaction is really good. When I was sick with the flu and was out for a week, the cashier that works there in the morning called to wish me a speedy recovery. That's a level of care that self checkout can never get you.

As a McDonald's employee, we don't have a tipping option, and in fact if we get any tips we're expected to put them in the donation jar (we-we don't usually do that though. Don't look at me like that!) The people in the kitchen have a much tougher go of it, yet they don't get tipped?

Yet, I have gone over and above for customers because that’s just where my heart is. And the jobs where I could receive tips, I did and sometimes got some amazing tips! But during the pandemic, we all opened our wallets a little more to help those out that you knew we weren’t making much money as a waitress or something. And now, tips are almost mandatory. I've never encountered a restaurant with self check out (small town), but I greatly prefer self check out while grocery shopping. It's a lot more accessible to me. I'm autistic and hard of hearing, and I'm usually extremely overstimulated and overwhelmed by the time I finish a whole grocery shop, and it's very loud near the front of the store so very difficult to make polite small talk because I can't understand what anyone is saying... without staring intensely at them to lip read, which kind of defeats the purpose of small talk in this scenario. As many little things as I can do to make going to the grocery store easier for myself, the more energy I have for actually continuing to function for the rest of the day.
I would feel a little bad doing self checkout at a restaurant though, not giving the employees a tip. Though I don't want to make small talk with them, I pretty much make the blanket assumption that anyone who works in customer service already experienced more than their fair share of day ruining crud by the time I interact with them and is not being paid nearly enough for that nonsense, so the least I can do is be polite and grateful and not make their job any harder than it needs to be.

  • @RicoRaynn

lol. This reminded me of a situation I found myself in about a week or two ago with a cashier.
I asked her the normal, “How you doing today?”
In the time it took her to ring up about 15 items I found out she was feeling nauseous because she has an eating disorder so she takes medicine, but she also has to be careful because diabetes runs in her family. Because of this disorder and the diabetes, she has weight issues and this causes complications in her lower joints because she stands so long.
All I could respond with was, “Good luck and hope you feel better.”
It’s called small talk, not ‘my depressing life in 5 minutes’. I just don’t understand people’s desire to share their L’s these days. Some things are meant to remain private.

Where I work there’s an option to tip and a lot of customers love doing it and others not so much. We don’t care AT all if you don’t tip and are grateful when you do. Don’t stress about it. You have the money and want to tip, go ahead. Or you have the money and don’t want to tip? That’s fine too. I think in general that’s how tipping should work.

Cashier here, I’m the exact opposite. I get so relieved whenever someone uses the self checkout cause it means I won’t have to deal with someone being rude or getting upset at me for asking them to apply for our credit card or cause their coupons are expired. People can be so rude about not wanting to use the self checkout cause they “don’t want us to lose our jobs” or cause they aren’t getting paid to do it themselves. It’s one thing to enjoy human interaction or be scared of technology, but acting like it’s the epitome of what’s wrong with today’s youth is frustrating
