I used to love Pearl Jam but they lost my attention with Yield 22 years ago. I keep giving them chances, but this album doesn't sound like it's going to change anything for me.
Best album for a good while. I got bored with Avocado, Backspacer was more commercial and decent, but they lost me on Lightning bolt just to meh. This album sounds great and takes a few chances but seems more consistent than Riot act etc. Best Matt Cameron album
Yield was difficult, but not as boring as Binaural or Lightning Bolt. S/T & Riot Act we’re both shots in the arm. This album? Good, but like Yield, Part II at this juncture
Best album since Yield. The whole album works together and the songs are fantastic. It’s an album I want to listen to from start to finish as a whole, not just picking out the tracks I like. Worth the wait.
"Comes Then Goes" is the best song on the album I think.... It sounds like the song is about Chris Cornell.... Understandably, I think Eddie wanted to knock this one out of the park.... And I believe he succeeded, adding one of the more brilliant/beautiful additions to their spectacular catalogue.
This album is so much better than their last two albums. Switching producers was the best thing they could have done. The whole album has this dark atmospheric ambiance that makes every song flow and feel like one cohesive album. Something PJ really has never done. One thing I'll say is take the long way is a Matt Cameron track and with the typical odd time signatures I get the vibe that it was a ong he originally wrote for Soundgarden but with Chris's death couldnt make it for a next SG record, so he brought the idea to PJ and they did their take on it. Just a theory obviously. Also, This is easily Matts best work hes done with the band. His drumming is Soundgarden worthy at times.
I have to agree that the production and engineering of this album is top notch. And it truly flows and fits as a real hour long experience from beginning to end.
@@logandogan272 I agree with you. I liked the last two albums better. I think I will have to listen to this album a few more times like I have had to do with most of Pearl Jam's work in the last 10 years. I definitely feel that their last two albums are grossly underrated.
Gigaton is a masterpiece. I have a different favorite every day but Comes Then Goes, Seven O’Clock, Quick Escape, and DOTC really stand out for me. They just keep getting better.
I like Superblood, but find it "samey" to what they've been putting out for the past decade, which isn't bad music but has never moved me. The same, for my part, can be said of the latter half of the album which largely feels like Vedder's solo work. The *only* true outliers to this entire album that really transcend the past 15 years are "Dance of the Clairvoyants", "Buckle Up", and "Quick Escape", each for different reasons. The rest, is just "modern" Pearl Jam - it rocks but doesn't ignite any fires or stir any deep soul pools. This album is the best since Avocado, but isn't as good as I was hoping after hearing "Dance..." and "Quick Escape".
@Mad Season get out we need some hope, they still have amazing tons of fans, boring is far from what I'd call it, I'm 22 almost 23 and they started before my time and I love NIN and Pearl Jam they are fun live, they are definitely not boring, old isn't equal to boring my friend
I've listened to every Pearl Jam album before Gigaton and I can honestly & without any shame say that this is their best one since Vitalogy. It's also the grungiest album I've heard in 18 years. (Born in '94, I'm going on 27.)
I hate to say it but not blown away like everyone else. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with guys writing individual songs. Most of their best songs are one guys main idea. The sound of this record is excellent and there’s solid songs as a whole but too much forced complexity it seems .They are sometimes a bit too long as well. Again just my opinion. Its a solid record , just not as great as some are thinking. Still my favorite band and always will have my love and loyalty. Then again in a year I may really like this record. If anyone can write something that takes time it’s these guys. Glad this record is helping others that do like it a lot , especially with what’s going on.
I agree with you on the forced complexity... "Comes Then Goes" (apparently about Chris Cornell) is, in my opinion, the best album on the record... Partially because it is just Eddie and his guitar. The lyrics in this song are phenomenal, and it's an all around homerun in my opinion. It actually sounds the most like an early Pearl Jam song to me in some ways.
Dance of the clairvoyant definitely gave off a talking heads maybe even a depeche mode type vibe. This isnt their best album, but it is a damn good album i will definitely going back to for more listens.
Lol wow. Just got done watching Crash’s Pearl Jam video again. As far as this album goes, it’s very experimental but with added world-weariness and maturity. I love how the album takes chances and still sounds amazing.
Velocisaurusman not at all, though it is surprising since they’ve been around for so long now. I love all of their albums, though Yield is probably their weakest, imo, even with a slew of fantastic songs. Their opening trio of albums were nearly perfect; though their 4th, initially derided by many, will always be a favorite of mine. Riot Act is fantastic, and had them dabbling with various other styles of rock in the 90s and early 00s that they never quite dabbled with before. Their self-titled/avocado one is an excellent one, though more in their “classic” style. Their three most recent ones, including Gigaton, are also all remarkable.
I love Pearl Jam for being able to innovate and evolve their sound. It sounds great and they can still go back to their origins when necessary and that also sounds amazing.
Great album, one of my favorites. Pearl jam doesn't make bad music in my opinion so every album they've released is phenomenal. Their a band who doesn't fear away from experimenting with their music and direction. So F ing grateful their still here! As long as they keep pumping out phenomenal music I'll be here playing it😁🏄

Nice to see someone else ranking the Avocado album high on the ist. That album doesnt get as much love as it deserves. For me its 1. Vitalogy 2. Ten 3. Vs 4. Avocado 5. No Code 6. Yield 7. Riot act 8. Binaural 9. Gigaton 10. Backspacer 11. Lightning Bolt
Lighting bolt was easily the worst album in my opinion , backspacer gets alot of hate I don't really know why there's only one song I would skip the rest are all awesome
Truth is, I could live with everything they made up to Binaural. After that, aside from a decent 6 song stretch on 2006's Avocado, the boys just don't make good music anymore. Just too lazy. I'd rather hear a retirement announcement than another record.
I'm a huge fan of PJ, so with that said... I love Gigaton so far. It's an album I need right now so much. My favorite song is definitely Quick Escape. It's possible a Top 15 PJ song all time, but it's too early for me to really feel that yet. When a band this good focuses and the times match their message, they are potent. With the global pandemic and Trump's horrible response to it, this album is getting me through social distancing hell.
Superblood Wolfmoon! I can’t get that phrase out of my head! What it means, I have no idea. It’s like don’t call me daughter! It just sticks in your head.
I was very nervous when I heard Dance Of The Clairvoyants because it sounded like they were trying to go pop but then Superblood Wolfmoon dropped and my fears were eased a bit. Then I heard the full album and it pleasantly surprised me with how good it really was
My thought is that recently many established musicians started making "statements" on every vital (or supposedly vital) topic. But they simultaneously forgot to write good songs. Like three last Drive-By Truckers albums sound like the same one song with minor changes. Pearl Jam sadly couldn't avoid such a practice. Thank you very much for your political statement, but it is the music that I love first and foremost. Just another album alongside good Backspacer, mediocre Lightning Bolt. Gigaton is good but no better. The eponymous album still stands out as their best record in the 2000s and 2010s. By the way, PEARL JAM (2006) was also extremely political and social. It just had brilliant songs.
Quick escape is the most rocking song on the album. Yield was their last great record. I blame Matt Cameron, great drummer but lacks the edge the band needs.
Been a fan since i was 14, i will be 43 next month, and to be honest this album is not good to me at all. Matt Cameron sounds like he just hits one drum on each song. Ed is getting older and he is trying to sing too perfect and its cringy. 1 out of 5 stars. Be honest!.
Don't like it. Maybe 4 ok songs on it. There are some hella tasty guitar and bass moments, though. I don't like how Eddie is singing these days, but mostly these songs are just boring.
It's garbage. Ed said he allowed everyone to have a voice in the album. The result, it sucks. Ed needs to stop trying to let everyone feel happy and take control again. You can tell in interviews he knows it sucks but it's now about giving out participation trophies instead of winning.
Eddie has ruined pj. To much solo crap. Mccready has written the best positive uplifting songs. Eddie is elitist and has driven to much of his politics in the band past 7 years. Given to fly, inside job, comeback, all by mcready...good album but not great.
At this point I’m glad they are trying to keep things interesting. Better than their last album in my mind. Their prime was so good it would be hard to crack their top four albums. I’m sure certain songs will grow on me with further listening. Be Excellent to Each Other!
This is the third album to come out since I've been a fan. I got into these guys in '08. After hearing Life Wasted in 9th grade i was slowly shifted from a weird metalhead/hard rocker to a a grunge alt rock type. I learned the entirety of Ten, Vs, and a lot of the later stuff. I couldn't wrap my head around a bunch of fellow white dudes who weren't full of ego and dressed modestly but played badass music. When Backspacer came out it was challenging cause of the polished, concise poppy Springsteeny punkish stuff rather than the raw, bleak, cathartic rock. I still learned the whole album and play along many times and learned to love it. That album really colored the fall of my junior year in highschool where I just cared about getting stoned, playing music, and hanging out. Amongst the Waves is in my top ten PJ. It seemed like an eternity between Backspacer and Lightning Bolt. Graduated highschool, had two failed relationships, did a shit ton of drugs and drink, played a lot of music, had tons of fun. On October 15th 2013, Lightning Bolt came out. I went out to a buddy's apartment where he was in college. We drank and jammed to the album. Unfortunately I was making other problems with booze and I made a dumb decision. I ended up with a DUI that night which was a temporary life ruiner and made it difficult for me to enjoy the album cuz I associated it then with the arrest. However I eventually did get off booze and looking back realize that those songs Pendulum, Sirens, Infallible just by coincidence had lyrical warnings on them pointed at society but also to individuals. By thinking I was infallible I had the addiction in control. The pendulum counted the days of crazy drinking until I actually heard sirens if the police come for me that night. Nearly 7 years later Gigaton is unleashed... I think most people can relate to Gigaton's current relevance. Pearl Jam seems to appear in my life when shit is going down. They are great.

total disappointment of an album. they lost it. when they tour, most of the songs will be from the first three records.
I'll bet the mayor of Seattle has body guards surrounding Eddie Vedder since he's the last living Grunge singer.
Don't let Mark Arm hear you say that :)
He means in the big 4

@Seafra Mcgabhainn then stop replying dumb dumb. the album is garbage. good day!.
Just not engaging? Are you kidding me? Seven o’clock is the best song on the album.
Don't like it. Maybe 4 ok songs on it. There are some hella tasty guitar and bass moments, though. I don't like how Eddie is singing these days, but mostly these songs are just boring.
Pretty scrappy if you ask me
Decent album not the best
first?
It's garbage. Ed said he allowed everyone to have a voice in the album. The result, it sucks. Ed needs to stop trying to let everyone feel happy and take control again. You can tell in interviews he knows it sucks but it's now about giving out participation trophies instead of winning.
This album is a true 5/10 every track is just an okay song. It exists and its kinda boring. 5/10
14 Trump fans and counting in the downvotes lol
Sounds like trash tbh
5/10 i didn't like it
Eddie has ruined pj.
7 o'clock might be the 2nd best song here - after Quick Escape. Great review, though.
This album is, by far, their weakest. It’s embarrassing. Second weakest album is the self-titled “Avocado” album. Every other album is great!
It's a Classic Pearl Jam album! AWESOME 👍😊
