basiclly the weather. facing September and knowing it will snow always helps. And i need space for it, room-space and time space. But i know what you mean. I had a spinning hang over for half a year, and that with a second new wheel with a fast flyer in front of me. Greetings from Austria.
Soooo my knitting mojo typically takes a long summer vacation, and I’m ok with that. It helps reignite my interest when September rolls around. I think your advice/thoughts on the futility of resistance is spot on. Just ride the “I don’t want to knit a thing” wave all the way to “I want to knit all the things”…because there’s no middle ground sometimes.
Thank you for sharing this creative insight. Last year I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer and had to undergo surgeries, chemo treatments, immuno therapy this year so knitting was my escape from my reality. Also when I couldn’t do anything else due to extreme pain, no energy, … just moving my hands was enough so I definitely agree with you on that. Prior to my cancer journey I would knit hat for the homeless and premies which helped spark my creativity and give back. I’m so grateful that I know how to knit and to watch blogs like yours to inspire me and at times make me smile. ☺️Thank you and stay safe.
Love the tips. Can't say I've ever had trouble getting back to knitting but I do sometimes struggle with "my" knitting--style, choices, successes, failures. I knit like a bee, jumping from flower/WIP to WIP until something gets done. When I run across someone on UA-cam who is able to devote themselves to one or two items at a time, I feel inadequate. I've come to realize 1) this issue is bigger than my knitting, 2) being a bee is a good thing, and 3) I do eventually have completed projects to show for my effort.
I crochet and knit, love doing both. I feel totally useless when I’m not making something but I have slumps quite often over the past few months. I think my problem is I’ll start a million projects at one time and get so overwhelmed that life just feels over. Lol ridiculous right? I try my best to fight these slumps and I just feel worse. I’m married with a grown daughter and 2 granddaughters so I have lot’s to be joyful about. I’m disabled and no longer work for the past 12 years and have built my life around creating and making. I’m glad that you talk candidly about the ups and downs of being creative and how you deal with this to make a comeback ❤️.
Thank you so much for sharing that, Jeanna. And it's not ridiculous at all! I (and I'm sure lots of other people) have definitely been there. 💖 I think we're so lucky to have something like knitting/crochet to turn to when things get tough and something we love to do so much that it can get overwhelming! If that's not love, I don't know what is! 😂 At least knitting (or any interest) will always be there for us, no matter how many times it frustrates us or let it fall to the wayside. Am I right?? I can't imagine life without knitting, anymore! 😊
Love your honesty about losing your knitting mojo, Kristin! It makes me feel better. I put my knitting down for a few weeks and just did something else I love: I read. A lot. But I have projects to make that I promised I would (like my mum's hat that is for her birthday in 3 weeks; yikes) and I'm nearly finished with the body of a sweater. I picked it up tonight as I've been binge-catching-up on your videos, and it feels wonderful :). Sometimes you just have to let it sit, with no pressure on yourself, right? Anyway, you completely inspire me! Can't wait to see your bubble sweater come to completion!
You are completely right Kristin! I have been going through a crochet and knitting slump. So I have been taking this time to focus on learning French, decluttering, and working in my gardens.
I relate to the feeling of unrest when am not creating something tangible. This episode is very timely for me, having just emerged from creative block lasing about a month. Have noticed when this happens to me, it's a message that my creative energy is needed elsewhere in my life at this time. It's needed for important work of dealing with a loss or hurt, for healing, for coping, etc. Those times have been ones for doing less or doing little to nothing as I let the wave wash over me -- work needs to be done at that time to restore or keep me well. Thank you for addressing this, giving lots of great options, and sometimes it's ok to just be in the stage of stillness. That too is of great value, to be comfortable with ourselves in the quiet. These times too are creative in their own way. Bless you!!
I believe that a "schlump" (spelling??) can be a universal nudge encouraging you to step out for a minute to discover another creative aspect of yourself that you are either overlooking or not even open to. Thank you for sharing your anxiety story, I can relate. Great episode, keep going....I will check out that book as well :)
Lots of times if I don't feel like knitting if I watch a knitting podcast and watching someone else knit or watching how to technique videos where the work is being knitted will get me back on
Wonderful podcast. I am just coming out of a fairly long slump....from most everything. It is feeling good to have my mojo starting to move. I had misplaced a pair of knitting needle tips, and in the process of hunting for them I looked in every bag, moved all the yarn, and found myself getting inspired to knit. Never did find the tips, but did find energy. So I connected with your tip of re-organizing. Thanks so much.
Don´t freak out! That´s my tip :) My knitting interest has fizzled down a bit although I´m still knitting, and it comes down to re-identifying myself if I´m not knitting all the time - and it´s a bit scary...Then I can of course read, cook, take a walk, get my home in shape (gasp)...Great tips from you, very helpful
YES! I forgot to mention not to panic. -- It really is a little scary when something that you're so used to doing all the time and which brought a certain level of joy, starts to fade. I love the idea of "re-identifying". I think it's completely normal to go through phases and seasons of things that interest us. Thanks for sharing, Hildigunnur! 💖
I will take a break and watch new to be movies and TV shows I can't focus on when knitting/crochet. I will work on old wips as well or frog them. This leads me into reorganizing my yarn, seeing yarn I had intended for specific projects gives me a place to start knitting or crocheting new projects again.
I started cross stitching to keep my hands busy. There are so many different types of pattern designers, over-dyed threads and fabrics. The flosstube community is amazing. I think, and hope, my knitting mojo will come back once the weather cools down.

My longest break of making was like 2 years where I lost my mojo! But I have to say it was also due to personal circumstances. I lived in a flat share with no space, no money (hence the flat share), and a lot of pressure (final phase of PhD, hence no money ;b ). But when that changed I got it all back. I noticed that pressure is the worst for creativity. I get it all flowing when I am not under pressure. So taking a step back doing something else (breaking the cycle) is a really good idea. Then you start seeing things differently. Taking time to just enjoy your surroundings like on a walk or looking at art in a gallery is also really helpful for any creative mojo..
I'm sitting here watching your podcast, without my knitting. I finished my shawl last night and now I have to skein up some new yarn. I haven't done that yet, so I feel like I'm wasting my time, sitting without doing something! I think cleaning your knitting or crafting room or things up, gets my knitting mojo going. I see all the things and it's now organized and I know where it's all at, I'm ready to create! Starting my second Cedar Pullover from Joji tonight.

It's so important to rest so I could (hopefully) knit until I'm basically a fossil!

Great tricks and advice. I have experienced all that recently and am learning to give myself the grace to go with the flow. Your work and posting help to inspire me. Thank you.
I am a total creative addict! It’s a good way to phrase it because I feel lost or out of place if I’m not working on something. When I get in a rut my go to is to switch up the crafts. So whenever I get burnt out on knitting I switch to cross stitch or crochet. I’m usually pretty obsessive/monogamous to one craft type so it will rotate throughout the year
I have been watching your video for awhile and I have some of your patterns on ravelry then I binge watched outlander and decided to give knitting another go and I think I have garter stitch down then we went back into level 4 lockdown here in NZ so my next project is sitting waiting for me in store. In my case, the loss of mojo with my writing after suffering burnout from an insane writing schedule to the point I couldn't write (the very idea made me want to toss my computer and hide in a dark corner) was what brought me back to knitting after just picking at it here and there over the years. I still needed a creative outlet. Journaling also helped. It definitely helped putting my thoughts/feelings/stream of consciousness down on paper. Changing things up (breaking the cycle!) is definitely a great idea. It takes the pressure off feeling you 'have to' do something and allows you to come back to it in your own time with fresh eyes.
I like to change my projects, read, watch knitting podcasts ( and others) but I must admit to a complete obsession with knitting - that said plenty of times I need a small break to sort of "stop and smell the roses" as they say. That way, I return with renewed enthusiasm and excitement.
My longest was 18 years. Kids can do that… But I do have to take breaks. My fingers are older now. I bounce between cooking, the all day type not just throwing dinner on the table. Quilting, books and writing letters. Often a slump is related to either lack of inspiration whether it is in a pattern or yarn. I do keep small projects going for this reason.
I'm finally casting off my blanket that I have been working on for a year ^_^ I'm working on another blanket (this time crochet) and a hat that I'm confident will actually fit me
Walking away and doing something completely different has helped me a lot. I come back to my projects rejuvenated and eager to pick up things stranded on “sleeve 🏝 island” (say what??!.!) and then definitely it happens - Bobs your Uncle! Thanks for a very informative episode. Have fun Kristen! 😘
I tend to lose mine during the Summer. I cross stitch samplers then. I love to do both. What brings back my mojo is that first chill in the air at Fall. I also like to go through my stash and feel inspired then too.
I stopped for quite a while. To be it back after time off, I start out slowly. Doing a simple project, finishing it, then doing more and more complex projects.
Kristin, you've totally inspired me - you inspired me to start my own podcast! I loved yours so much I decided to give it a try 😁 But in terms of knitting funks, I like to teach myself new knitting techniques to get out of it! I find that learning brioche or lace knitting or casting on my first sweater really gets me excited to do the craft again! But I also like your point of trying out another craft for a while, that has also helped me.

Re-organize the yarn ⭐️….and always when everything gets in the way of my knitting even one row…makes me want to knit more….especially when I decide to rewind a skein still attached to my current project and create a tangled mess that requires hours to de-tangle….☺️….and I agree that taking a break and doing something else that you used to do or never have done is a great thing to do….like writing another book or learning another language…..😊
Oh man ... who ARE you people that find joy in de-tangling?!?! 😂😂😂 I can totally see how it can be meditative, though. And yes! Nothing like going through and reorganizing ye olde stash. 😌
@@Voolenvine Oh I did not enjoy it! It was torture but forced myself to do it because of my own mistake in causing it. 😂🖤 and I discovered that detangling yarn is like life… full of twists and turns etc.
Love all the tips! I also think journalling about the knitting helps rekindle the joy. I like to catch up on documenting my projects in a notebook or on Ravelry because I never do it during the project :) And that seems to get me inspired again.
Ooh, I love the idea of documenting your projects in a physical notebook. Less chance of distraction, too! I may have to try that. Thanks for sharing that awesome tip, Shehnaz!
Thanks so much for this video! I love and agree with all your tips. Watching made me realize that cleaning and organizing is probably what I need to do most to feel more excited about knitting (and my life in general!) Excited to jump in!
I guess I’m that unicorn 😅 I only knit one whip at a time and that’s because I am learning other creative things like teaching myself to animate (and going to college for it). Besides I also like finishing things to so….
I need tips on how to LOSE my knitting mojo. Pregnancy has seemed to be the only thing to quell it, for some reason wool made me queasy. And that's no fun, because tiny sweaters are my hearts desire!
Very relatable situation. Not so much with knitting for me. Lately, knitting helps keep my mind a little quieter. The last year and a half has been brutal and it seemed to be turning the corner. Once again, my life is consumed by covid, but so much of the damage is preventable now. We're short staffed everyday and just exhausted. My faith in humanity has taken a major hit. There is so much stupidity, I want to scream or cry. I used to enjoy ultra running, OCR, and sprint tri. I find no joy in those things. That's where I've lost my mojo. And again, it's summer and the sky looks like Bladerunner. Unhealthy to be active outside. I remember back in the day when there weren't all these summer/fall fires. It's definitely been a low period. I'm going to take a week off (the pto request was approved before things got super surgey) and I'm trying not to feel guilty about it.
Your turn! Tell us what helps you bounce back after losing your knitting mojo?

Great video! 💕
Currently in a slump lol, but hoping to get back in it soon!
Sending knitting mojo vibes at'cha!! 💓🙌💓😄
Thanks so much for this video! I love and agree with all your tips. Watching made me realize that cleaning and organizing is probably what I need to do most to feel more excited about knitting (and my life in general!) Excited to jump in!
Cleaning is the best (and cheapest!) form of therapy, IMHO! 😂😂😂 Happy tidying! 💖
I'm happy I know how to crochet as well so when I loose the MOJO to one I pull out the other!!
Taking a knitting class keeps my mojo going
I have done a lot of sewing and needlepoint. I just do not sweat it my knit mojo returns eventually 😂
If this resonates with anyone else, I suggest checking out the Art Horse Podcast!
giving myself permission to put projects to the side when they are too frustrating and coming back after joy has been restored.
THIS!!! 🙌
7a. Make for charity.
Absolutely!!!
Life’s lessons learned… and who’s this Bob guy? 😂
😂 I think I need to knit an Uncle Bob ... 😜
