In 2013, shortly after he received the Medal of Honor, we had the honor of interviewing Staff Sergeant Clinton Romesha about his military career and his actions on October 3, 2009 during the Battle of Kamdesh.
The Battle of Kamdesh was a coordinated assault of 300 plus Taliban soldiers on the much smaller American force stationed at Outpost Keating. The 12-hour long battle resulted in 8 Americans killed and 27 wounded while the Taliban suffered an estimated 150 killed. This battle was later portrayed in the 2020 film, The Outpost, and Scott Eastwood portrayed Staff Sgt. Romesha.
On February 11, 2013 Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha was awarded the Medal of Honor for his action during the battle. He is the fourth living Medal of Honor recipient from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Interview recorded on November 9, 2013

My youngest brother served 4 combat tours in Afghanistan, and the horrors of war have absolutely changed him. He is now in active addiction, and we are helpless to help him. The film, "The Outpost" covers the battle of COP Keating fairly well. My friend Taylor John Smith portrayed LT. Bundermann in it. After hearing Romesha speak, the production team did a brilliant job of adhering to the event as closely as possible. Well worth watching if you haven't seen it already.

What a great movie, that was the first I'd ever heard of that event, I had no idea when I started watching it on Netflix that it was a true story, then what was really wild was finding out that several of the guys played themselves in it.
It's probably the single best movie about an event during the War on Terror because afterwards there wasn't all kinds of controversy over things being greatly distorted by the makers of the film or even by the sources themselves like what's surfaced about some books written by people that as it turns out they changed things quite a bit themselves for reasons best described as self promotion.
What I'd like to see is a no BS movie about what really happened at Roberts Ridge especially what Chapman did, Hollywood could change that all they want for dramatic effect and the only thing that'd happen is it'd be less dramatic then what really happened on that hill, I've never even heard of a tale of bravery and sacrifice anywhere even close to what Chapman did much less be able to actually see it on video from a drone, that man just didn't stop, 12 wounds including 2 in the chest and they just couldn't get rid of him, he kept killing Taliban to where he even took out one of their donkeys, what a bad ass he was and no one can dispute the fact that he deserved a MOH, it's a shame however that a certain group tried blocking it though, speaks volumes about them.

@ kiwi comanche. Yes, absolutely agree- the addition of veterans made that film. I wonder if you have caught up with 'Danger Close' which is a recent Australian film about the battle of Long Tan, 18 August 1966? A stack of vets from the Australian Army were involved and I think it definitely shows., like theOutpost Lastly, I wonder if you are connected with NZ ( from your title), in which case you will be glad to see 16 FIELD REGT RNZA figure prominently in the movie.

I was 2ID out of Korea when we deployed, 1-506th Air Assault Camp Greaves. Romesha was trying to deploy and I was trying not to get stop lost! I remember a tank getting hit with an IED and the wrecker dragging it back tearing up Michigan, I also remember being an lone turret gunner left behind by my platoon and a Tank crew coming up and pulling security for me till we got a hold of my guys. Those tankers were awesome we even sent two guys to be loaders for them. I also deployed from Carson 4ID during the surge it was crazy times! I left before afghan as three years deployed with in 4 & 2 stop lose I just wasn't having a good time in the infantry lol Glad Romesha stayed and fought. It's impressive he did what he could and is able to talk about it. Crazy how I shared Al-Habbaniyah left over marine chow with this guy as just another camo dude and than later he's the one that fights like an true Currahee!!! I just finished reading SSgt Romesha's book about the defense of COP Keating, "Red Platoon". I highly commend it to everyone who watched this interview. The book gives compelling detail about the first day of this battle, including the heroic and complex air and artillery support campaign waged to save the brave soldiers fighting so desperately on the otherwise untenable ground below. The book also contains a detailed map of Keating, enabling the reader to follow the moves made by Red Platoon's soldiers throughout the first crucial day. Excellent read!

God Bless you and all of the " 51" . You make me proud to be a Veteran and an American. You did everything that you could and your men stuck by your side. RIP all of the American KIA. My heart breaks seeing the pain in your face and eyes. Never doubt yourself and I know that it's easier said than done. God bless you SSG , I would have been proud to have served by your side and strong with your leadership!!🙏🙏💔💔

I had been in the Air Force 3 months and was training to be an air traffic controller when 9/11 happened. That was pretty crazy. 18 year old kid, brand new in the Air Force and suddenly your country is under attack. I know it was just the air force, but we didn't know wtf was going to happen. Completely changed everything though.
