Since Matthew Mercer’s homebrew class is on Beyond it shouldn’t be too large of a hurdle to add the Apothecary. I would also like subclasses from Grim Hollow to be added.
I supported your Kickstarter and had an Alienist in my playtest group. They served as the parties command hub, staying in the back while the Mutagenist and Reanimator made the frontline and the Pathogenist sniped. Linking everyone telepathically so the party never talked outloud. Giving them an even creepier vibe than they already had.
Hey dudes, I just gotta say that life has been treating me awfully lately and one of the things keeping my head from spinning is listening to these videos while I'm working or taking care of things, and I really appreciate that. Y'all keep doing what you're doing. Much love from a grateful viewer ❤
Thank you for all of your hard work. Your subclasses are some of my favorite for Grim Hollow, and when my finances allow, I will also be purchasing Drakkenheim. I have been a slave to dark fantasy since I was a kid, starting with the Diablo games & LotR. I love to head cannon Grim Hollow & Drakkenheim being part of an expanded Ravenloft experience.
For anyone looking at a warforged alienist, there was an old Eberron book the Secrets of Xendrik and it had information about really old warforged, not the house cannith ones, but found on Xendrik and they were built with integrated crystals called the Psyforged. And in the town of Stormreach there are a group of warforged who are the exact opposite of the Lord of Blades group who emphasize the "living" part of living construct and who call themselves the "lifeforged". The wood in their bodies sprouts leaves and grows, and they try to learn about living people. So there's two bits of really good canon to link to if you want to make a warforged alienist that wants to explore psychic powers and learn about the living races' psychology.
My next character was going to be a Warforged Stars Druid, with the idea that they had forgotten their master and had become obsessed with the cosmos. But now the idea of a Warforged Apothecary Alienist is the new idea. I love it. Can't wait to get my physical copy of Sebastian's (already have Drakenheim on the shelf lol).
A friend is about to run a Victorian era monster hunter campaign. Brilliant timing for this video to come out, because I had already pondered WANTING to play an apothecary; seeing you create a whole class AND this amazing subclass is exactly what I need for the character I hope to create! I'll be buying the book here shortly.
Been waiting for these individual subclass videos for the apothecaries. I have a player who is making an Excorcist for our Drakkenheim campaign. Chemist would be next for alphabetical videos for Apothecaries, but we shall wait patiently 🎉
Thank you so much for doing these guides! I can't wait for you to do more. I'm getting ready to start playing an alienist, so it was super neat to see what your concept was as you designed it.
I love this subclass, and would already homebrew a magic item for them: an Emotional Support Animal. Have it be an abstract figurine that changes to a small animal of the player's choosing after attunement. It then basically becomes the person's familiar in a way, except it can't enter combat. Instead it gains Emotional Support Points it can use to cast Bless, Guidance, gain Temp HP, or reroll a save. Points recharge after a long rest. I think it'd be fun to run around with an Emotional Support Octopus, or an ESA bunny (we had a real ESA bunny, so I can attest to them being magical in their own way).
I'm playing an alienist in Drakkenheim, we just reached level 5. My build is very close to what you recommend in this video; human, telekinetic, lab assistant, vital signs, bedside manner. Here are some takeaways: -definitely support-utility-control. Absolutely not a damage dealer! -subtle casting nondamaging spells is /phenomenal/. I have ended or avoided several fights with suggestion or charm person, and love just casually skimming people's surface thoughts without any risk at all! -I sometimes struggle with not having anything good to do with my action. -Telepathic is an absolute must. I very rarely lack good things to do with my bonus action! -Eldritch blast is fine and all, but it makes me sad that I'll soon be able to take a theory that can boost my poison needle cantrip but I can't do anything to improve my mind bullets :( -I will forever miss the original version of mind tether. I was so looking forward to using it to spy on my enemies through their eyes! And to cheat at card cames! The nerf was absolutely heartbreaking 💔
This video came out at the perfect time! My roommate is about to start running Dungeons of Drakkenheim and I am planning on being an alienist apothecary so this video was super helpful. Can’t wait to explore the ruins with this subclass!
Just bought the new book and started looking over the Apothecary. This, right here, is how you make a new class for DnD. Depending on subclass choice, you can have radically different play styles. I don’t get to play too much (the curse of the forever DM), but I want to try an Apothecary out the next chance I get.
I love the quip about being the therapist for your party, that's what I do with my party as an Alienist! This class gave me the the options to be me ultimate parapsychologist self!
I'm playing an Alienist Apothecary for Vibe Tribe Productions, and I'm very excited to see how it all plays out! I took Extracurricular Research and Medical Expertise on my Harengon Investigator to round out the "community doctor looks into the occult" vibe!
Finally a class/subclass I can use my psychology degree to inspire a character. No more looking at cleric or bard. Especially when I don't want charisma as the focus. Making me think of Scarecrow (Batman) with this class or spell choices.
You mentioned the Eliza program. I remember that well. It was amazingly frustrating: "Does it please you to think that..."? was the response to almost every question.
I'm running a 5E Dark Sun game and one player is playing a shardmind alienist. His character looks like an obsidian dragon, and he has little to no knowledge of his background as he was found buried in the desert, fully aware, but with amnesia. This subclass works fantastically as a semi-psionic caster who can offer support and some dragon-like features - flight, damage reduction, etc. - and with a couple of extra spell picks (including dragon breath) he's living his fantasy of being a psionic dragon. I think this subclass works really well without being overpowering.
I've been playing a warforged psychic psychologist for over a year irl, and I love it!! I'm actually a mental health practitioner, and it's been so much fun to use my work skills in game to make the role play more authentic
I think halfling (mark of healing perhaps) could also be a wholesome race with a good vibe background. Helping the locals, but oh goodie, turns out that they also have other less healing oriented skills so you better not p*ss them off. 😮😅 An Ooze alienist sounds both fitting and strange. What do you think or would you rather play as a Thri-Kreen alienist?
Oh I like the idea of making him a bit more melee. "Send in the psycho toad" 😂 With their natural poison abilities having a hands-on approach will be very synergetic with all the apothecary poison features. 🤔🧐🤧🤢🤮🤣🤪🙃😇😆😁
I wish that Treantmonk would take a look at your Apothecary class. (also did you know that the Insight Check did a video on his channel showcasing the Apothecary as great 3rd party class design?) I think the Alienist is one of the coolest Apothecary sublcass. The Mental Influence feature and Physic Points were push this class definetely into A+ tier in my books.
Listening to this, I had the idea for a plasmoid mutagenist who like, turns into a giant creature feature blob monster thing when they mutate. Kind of wanna explore other ideas for an apothecary, this one in particular sounds really cool but I also want to take a look at the other subclasses available.
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for in a class! Not to mention how great their subclasses seem to be. I’m super excited to see what you guys have cooked up when it comes out on dnd beyond! (It is coming to dnd beyond right ?)
Can you guys do another campaign series please? Also, with like maybe 5 or 6 players at least? I would love to see you put your philosophies into action. I feel like there is a lot to learn here.
I guess I listen to too many podcasts, because just about every time Kelly segued into a new section referencing the psychology-based abilities of the subclass, I thought, for a moment, that he was doing a Better Help ad pivot.
We filmed an update video last week and are working on getting it edited. All the products are manufactured, made, boxed, and ready to go, and shipping is starting soon.
I was going to also ask about if Sebastian Crowe's is coming to DnD Beyond, but also I'm starting a new campaign soon on Roll20 and it'll be my first VTT endeavor. What is the best way to use Sebastian Crowe's with Roll20, the Charactermancer?
Those who backed Drakkenheim are getting a code for Roll20. Same for those who bought the VTT plug-in for Sebastian Crowe's Guide. Which will be out in Feb for those who backed and bought the add-on
“Just because you are a psychiatrist or a psychologist doesn’t mean you’re not prepared to go out on the battlefield”, well as a psychologist I thank you for acknowledging that 😂
Litterally any medical add being played real time during the session: "what horrors are you feeding me strange doctor! I just have extreme allergies to kobolts!"
Assuming my players feel Vitriol Ichor (or would it be pronounced as Vitriolic Ichor when it hits?) is a bit too strong against high-AC targets, but I love the spell, would the following be a balanced compromise? "[...] While its armour is corroded, the creature's AC is reduced by an amount equal to the caster's Proficiency bonus, to a minimum of 10 + the target's Dexterity bonus (or equivalent if the creature possesses a feature that lets it use other attribute(s) to calculate its armor class)."
? If my malfeasant wizard hits an already transformed creature with a spell that increases its mutation, as a dm (what can I do with that?) We are early days into the campaign.
On the subject of which races would be an alienist, I'm imagining either a goblin or a gnome in a cheap brown suit, chain smoking cigarettes, and frenetically mumbling and talking through his theories as he works his way through a line of logic that only vaguely resembles reality, maybe having an office with notes, pictures, pages from books etc. Pinned to the walls with a complex web of yarn and twine connecting everything together and the Bottle of Boundless Coffee from Strixhaven always in his hand... maybe a combination of Fox Mulder, John Constantine, and other fictional occult Noir type characters...
@@custommizerOG unfortunately it isn't - yet. Dungeons of Drakkenheim is on DnD Beyond, but not Sebastian Crowe's Guide to Drakkenheim. The apothecary class is in SCGtD.
That may be due to the fact that those spells are not in the 5e SRD. Unfortunately 3rd party content can only include SRD spells, the rest they have to create their own
He totally said we give you the ability to steal as i was screen shoting my screen because im not buying the books until my incom tax come in.😂😂😂 Felt like i got busted lol
Hi, so I haven't seen this mentioned in the video, however there's something I picked up on as a psychology student. TL;DR - the role of the therapist builds distance between the therapist and other characters First of all I should say, I love the theme and execution of the class and subclass as a whole. It's all so customizable you'll never play two of the same character and all of them will be balanced really well. That being said, in terms of theme it was said a few times in the video that you can be the party therapist and while that's a cool archetype (perpetuated for example by FCG in Critical Role), I think It's important to not go overboard with this. An IRL therapist: -Is not on equal footing with the client, nor their friend. They must maintain professional distance from the client's experience and remain in control over the course of the conversation. -Should not give advice, because they are not accountable for what will happen to the client when they listen to the advice. Movies get this very wrong and it really hurts the public perception of the profession. While playing DnD, you're with your friends and even in-game, most parties operate on the basis of equal standing (no leader) and often there's at least camaraderie if not outright friendship. Organizing realistic and functional therapy for player characters requires you to assume a role of authority in your party and that will either distance your character from their friends or simply won't work, if the friendship gets in the way. I'm sure there's parties where this wouldn't be an issue and I am not saying this makes the Alienist or the party therapist archetype wrong by any means. However I would advise to play as a friend/ally who happens to have psychological knowledge/experience they are willing to share with friends, than an actual party therapist. For example, exercises that help the party relax or bond are great and would make for really memorable moments (to borrow from Critical Role, "wtf is up with that?" or the Feywild Bonding Course).
I'm not sure alienist is the right name for this class subclass. Aside from telekinetic and telepathy the theme seems more like a therapist than an alien. It's focused on psychic damage but aliens such as mindflayers are immune or resistant. I'm not sure what having a pet has to do with alien either. The subclass sounds cool but I'm not sure how the name came about.
This Genuinely makes the story worse for me, I’ve always thought jujutsu Kaisen was the exception. Once a character dies and has been gone for more than 5 chapters, It was over for them. But no turns it was just another Disney show. I still love jujutsu Kaisen, but this genuinely and sincerely makes the series so much worse for me It retroactively ruins the shibuya arc
When are we gonna get access to your guys awesome subclasses on DnDBeyond? I've already bought your campaign twice now... feed me more apothecarys!
For real, I am dying to use this class

I was waiting so much for this video! It's my favourite apothecary subclass and I think "Bedside Manner" is a MUST here 😊
Thank you for this video!
Love that they’re releasing this video before the new arc. 😂
Excited for more Drakkenheim build guides! Keep them coming!
Honestly my biggest takeaway from this video is wondering what's going on in Canada that the doctors have pet owls in their offices.
It's next to the automatic socialist assisted dying lever.
I also was like “wait what”

This whole class sound pretty neat. Super cool that y’all not only have a official book, but a class as well.
"Official" isn't really the case. But yeah. Their newest book also has subclasses for all the official classes except Artificer as well.

I have a player who joined my drakkenhiem game as a mutagenist recently at lvl 5. Its proving fun so far to bring that new dynamic to the group.
The warforged therapist is intriguing. Should the name be Stainless Freud or Sigmund Ferrous? Possibly Pink Freud?
Definitely the last one. That’s hilarious
24:24 - using :find familiar" for summoning a therapy pet

This is s tier thematic and fun sounding honestly
Super excited to see y’all make a video about the Mutagenist subclass!

Playing a lvl 5 Alienist with Eldritch Adept (free feat at lvl.1 courtesy of our GM) for Agonising Blast and Telekinetic was PURE DOPAMINE)
I'm playing a Warforged Pathogenist. It's a LOT of fun.
I hope to see a video like this for the Mutagenist! I love your work, Dudes! 🖤
Warforged with these features gives me slight Zenyatta from Overwatch vibes, which I'm loving.
Make a Grung Alienist Apothecary and call him the Hypno-toad when you use Hypnotic Pattern. 😂
Oh I like the idea of making him a bit more melee. "Send in the psycho toad" 😂 With their natural poison abilities having a hands-on approach will be very synergetic with all the apothecary poison features. 🤔🧐🤧🤢🤮🤣🤪🙃😇😆😁

Legitimately needs to be on DnD beyond and when are your foundry tools coming out!?

So Psionics?! Love your works, dudes!
Grung Alienist - HYPNOTOAD 😳
Earliest I’ve ever been 😁
Excited to see what a fantasy forensic detective PC looks like 🤩
~_~
I guess I listen to too many podcasts, because just about every time Kelly segued into a new section referencing the psychology-based abilities of the subclass, I thought, for a moment, that he was doing a Better Help ad pivot.
Grab a copy? Kickstarter contributors are still waiting for updates on delivery. Kindly provide that update.
We filmed an update video last week and are working on getting it edited.
All the products are manufactured, made, boxed, and ready to go, and shipping is starting soon.
We need SCGtD subclasses and the apothecary on DDBeyond
Guys great content as always, just one question: I’m super into pet therapy but what kind of doctor has an owl in it’s office? 😂
Can you maybe make a video about a way of the serpent monk ? I'm planing on making one with Yuan-ti serpent monk, so it's very snake.
I heard the words "nerve gas" and heard Lana Kane in my head saying "Do NOT - use the nerve gas!" 😂😂
Hey I’m jumping into this video wanting to ask about how you would improve D ranked cantrips and keep them balanced?
When the alienist goes out to the battlefield he's using his prescription pad to cast spells.
I was going to also ask about if Sebastian Crowe's is coming to DnD Beyond, but also I'm starting a new campaign soon on Roll20 and it'll be my first VTT endeavor. What is the best way to use Sebastian Crowe's with Roll20, the Charactermancer?
If it Guide to Drakkenheim doesn't get added to Roll20 then it's probably easiest to edit the sheet directly
Those who backed Drakkenheim are getting a code for Roll20. Same for those who bought the VTT plug-in for Sebastian Crowe's Guide. Which will be out in Feb for those who backed and bought the add-on
What magic item would you allow an apothecary to use to Boost there spell saves?
I know it's ravnica, but for some reason I also envision simic hybrid for alienist
Are these subclasses ever coming to dndbeyond through the new third party content?
Is it time to comment about the Steinhardt's Guide class and subclasses already? I guess it is.
Would an Alienist multi-class well with a Great Old One Warlock? The concept is cool, but would the mechanics mesh well?
I wish i could play this class in baldurs gate cuz it´s right up my alley. Also can i use this class in official dnd 5e games?
I think a veldkan would fit this subclass
“Just because you are a psychiatrist or a psychologist doesn’t mean you’re not prepared to go out on the battlefield”, well as a psychologist I thank you for acknowledging that 😂
I wish this could be built in DNDBeyond. I’ve become too used of getting the app make tons of different characters on that.
Litterally any medical add being played real time during the session: "what horrors are you feeding me strange doctor! I just have extreme allergies to kobolts!"
My name is Sebastian Crowe and I’m here to inspect your potions. Watching drakkenheim for the first time now so I’m a little behind.
More people should talk about these 3rd party classes and review them. Is it a problem with Trade marks/copy rights or am I just stupid?
I wish it could be added to D&D Beyond. It sucks that you cannot add a class to it.
Dhampir seems interesting to me aswel.
Breath of Nightshade, even on a save they are blinded one turn?
So when are we getting this class in dndbeyond?
I haven’t bought it yet, but it looks like it’s on there
@@custommizerOG unfortunately it isn't - yet. Dungeons of Drakkenheim is on DnD Beyond, but not Sebastian Crowe's Guide to Drakkenheim. The apothecary class is in SCGtD.
I want my scarecrow ! From Batman !!! Yes !!!
Did I miss them, or were none of the *mind* (sliver, spike, whip) spells included?
That may be due to the fact that those spells are not in the 5e SRD. Unfortunately 3rd party content can only include SRD spells, the rest they have to create their own
They are not in the SRD, so the Dudes are not allowed to use them.
He totally said we give you the ability to steal as i was screen shoting my screen because im not buying the books until my incom tax come in.😂😂😂 Felt like i got busted lol
Plasmoid would be a wild racial choice
At last!
I feel like you're missing a perfect touchstone for a mental manipulator Alienist Apothecary: Hannibal Lecter.
Mads Mikkelsen version for me.
Me waiting for lvl 2 spell tier lost so I can validate alter self
Give me a fire starter subclass for sorcerers !!!! Please 🙏
Lab assistant?? Does it have to be a labrador???
Hi, so I haven't seen this mentioned in the video, however there's something I picked up on as a psychology student.
TL;DR - the role of the therapist builds distance between the therapist and other characters
First of all I should say, I love the theme and execution of the class and subclass as a whole.
An IRL therapist:
-Is not on equal footing with the client, nor their friend.
Another thing: make sure your fellow players are okay with you making references to therapy, it can be a really heavy, triggering topic to people

@DungeonDudes Id mention in the channel Community tab the changes to the live stream

It retroactively ruins the shibuya arc
It really sounds like a reflavoured bard, but YMMV.
Oh! Dr. Phil is a bard who comes across as an apothecary, since he is not a doctor but addresses people through his force of personality.
Mechanically, the Apothecary class is closer to an Intelligent based Warlock. :)
@@zTom_ mechanically maybe, but the role seems to fill a similar niche to the bard.
I am really confused. This is not an apothecary, this is just yet another spellcaster. (Boring!)
An apothecary deals with potions and medications.
