      @@angrywehraboosnoises8016 Think of it this way. If you wanted something that would perform against the tanks of 1943 or 1944 like the KV-1 did against the Panzer-3's and Panzer-4's in 1941, you get to the Maus. If your requirement is something with such heavy armor that no tank of the time can knock it out with their main gun (like the KV-1 in 1941) you end up with an absurd beast of a tank.
      Its very German and very stupid at the same time. A great technical solution to bad requirements creating a useless system. Its just like the He-177 bomber. The figured out most of the flaws with strategic bombing earlier than any other country did. But then they came up with a technical solution of having heavy bombers be able to "dive bomb".

      @@Jim-Tuner but you wouldn't need a maus to be effective.
      Aside from the reliability issues a panther would be able to bounce of shells from a KV-1 more often that not. And it wouldn't be as big of a target to planes.
      I mean the panther was far away from invincible and i sound like a wehraboo for bringing this up (hence the name) but the KV-1 performed quite different than a indistructable force that only surrenderd once it ran out of ammo and fuel.
      So was the panther but you have to note that panzer 3 and 4s actually destroyed KV-1s
      Point being that the Maus seems more like a countermeasure to the KV-2 given that this tank had a much bigger canon.
      Then again i am not an expert and shouldn't be taken by word

    it's a surprise to me that the maus had a cramped turret and hull, I thought it was spacious for the 6 crews manning it.. the layout at 25:40 showed that almost all the space on the hull was occupied by the engine and transmission and coz of the size of the 12.8 cm main gun, it made the a bit cramped..

    6:22 comment to the photo comment. This railroad cart is not sagging, it is clearly purposely constructed or modified to transport the Maus. If a normal railcart would sag that much it would surely derail on a first arch. I'd rather point out that there is 4 set of wheels under the Sturmtiger and around 3 times more under the Maus.

    They should have just used the steel to finish the dozen maus. Why? Because they were suppose to be scrapped but none of them even were and the steel they were using that they were supposed to give to other tanks they kept. So basically it all went to waste when if they finished the dozen maus at least they got a few new tanks.

    Very comprehensive - looking forward to Part 2. Although, now more than ever, I am asking myself - "What were they thinking?" and why did not someone say "Chaps. Enough of that, lets get back to reality. And build more Pz 4 & Panthers or something." I can imagine Porsche telling Hitler about fitting the Flak 43 on the roof and Speer making strangling noises in the corner.

      The problem with building more panther G's and PzKfw IV's is that they would not have the fuel to supply them, due to the previous, making each tank as dangerous as possible would be the best possible decision

      The maus makes no sense because seems like we only see it in a military historical way. Fascism is capitalims in decay, where the state becomes a servant for the companies and enslaves the population. Germany never had a chance to win the war, but they didnt want to, because big companies like krupp, porche, wolkswaggen, heinkel, adidas, huggoboss... made a huge proffit. German companies where the ones that won the war. In that context, the maus was only a sinkhole for state money that some engineers and companies profited from. Thats why they never stoped changing things and they never asked the army about what they needed. At least is how i see it.

    • @Boric78
      @Boric78 4 роки тому +5

      @@jgrandson5651 You know everyone one of those companies had a pile of ash for a factory, no workers, worthless savings 8in a dead currency), no access to foreign savings and a lot of their directors on trial in 45/46/47. German companies "won" the peace due to the Marshal Plan and US dollars. They certainly did not win the war.

      Yeah, the "more panzer 4's and stugs" option seems great, but it ignores the oil, manpower and steel shortages in the reich during 44 onwards. they were even having trouble with manpower in 43. while a lot of slack was in the industries, and the maus was just one of the heavy tank dick measuring contest's fever dreams, there was a reason to things like the tiger 2, for the same men and a bit more fuel, it was hoped it could kill more. this didn't happen, as the reich also had chronic training problems, and shortages of strong enough tooling to improve the reliability of their late heavy tanks. it was a damning situation with no way out, and the reich didn't want to surrender either, so they fought to the end.

      @@ltcitadel actually, according to this video I'll quote (it's a shame it is in spanish, but you can at least see the figures in numbers), Germany had no serious shortages on fuel nor other resources like steel (they were not plenty anyway, but yet not crippling shortages) as late as 1943, but it had anyway lost most of the major battles they had fought and, one could even say, they had already lost the war.
