I never understood why our society is such prudish with such subjects anyways. after all, its LITERAL NATURE. like, I get it probably came from religion(and still does in some cases) but even then, why was religion so squeamish about those things in the first place, what started it all?? I will maybe never even know, or my brain is too small to comprehend the real answer if ever I hear it idk.

The trolls doll is one of the worst, and I personally saw it in action. Just before it was recalled, my dad (who resells toys) bought it. Then the whole controversy came out. Since he still had it, I myself was able to see the small button through the box and press it. It was seriously weird and disturbing. I hadn't heard of its purpose being for making noise when sitting before, but if that was the goal they did terribly. Over the few times I clicked it all I got was mostly short gasps and giggles. I don't usually gasp when I sit down...but okay. One of the worst absolutely, just so uncomfortable. I can't believe it was even approved.

You forgot about one of the best of all. The Earring Magic Ken doll, by Mattel. It continues to be the best selling Ken doll ever made by Mattel, and it was only sold for a total of six weeks. Mattel was trying to base the Ken doll off of people at clubs at the time. Issue was, they were at a very different genre of clubs. Turns out, they based the Ken doll off of gay fashion trends at the time! What really interested people was Ken’s necklace. His necklace was a silver ring. If you do a bit of research, you’ll find that gay fashion at the time largely had people using their uhhh, “ rings “ as fashion statements. These would show their preference in romantic partners. Mattel realized this too late, and quickly tried to take it off shelves. They were too late, and the damage was done. Funny as hell man. I need one of these dolls.

Not sure if someone answered this; but with the easy bake oven recall the issue was with the part where you insert the food into being too big; which allowed kids to stick their hands inside and thus get burned. Pretty sure this wasn’t really an issue with other models since they had a smaller opening.

Doll collectors don't really actually target her specifically unless they're into stranger releases, rare releases, or are attempting to collect *all* released barbies. Most just collect things that are nostalgic or pretty to the collector (which may include midge in some cases)
If you still had her, I'm pretty sure she would go for *around* $90. She honestly is only that much because of her recalling. She wouldn't actually be worth anything if it wasn't for her controversy unless she came with a movie.

@@Eepop_stuffs it's like the Oreo Barbie. There was a white Barbie and a black Barbie both themed around Oreos as a cross-promotion for the brand. However the black Barbie is far more valuable due to controversy causing her to be removed from store shelves ("Oreo" being a derogatory term for a black person who is half white, one who acts white).
Alternatively, popularity increases value. There were Barbies made for the cast of the show Victorious, and due to Ariana Grande being so famous now, the Cat Barbies are extremely expensive, despite having a full run on the shelves like the other characters.
Professional collecting of toys like Barbies is such an odd thing due to perceived rarity of items or the kind of value they have in retrospect. What's valuable today could be worth less tomorrow and vice versa. And what do they plan on doing with said toys anyway if they're just gonna put them in a shelf and never interact with them? Maybe get them insured for cash in case they get stolen or destroyed, but I like being able to enjoy my time with a toy before shelving it for memory sake. That's just me though.

I don’t know how many claims there were of broken ribs, but if it was only one and it just happened to be the most extreme injury it’s likely the kid could’ve gotten it before taking legal action in an unrelated incident. The parents would have just claimed the toy caused it to get a better chance in court.
I have seen some other comments saying that maybe a kid fell on top of them and the blades slashed into them, but I think those were either a foam or a VERY thin plastic so that doesn’t seem very likely.

one of my younger relatives had pregnant Midge doll back in the day. I was a couple of years older than her, but we both thought that this idea of pregnant barbie doll was real cool. Not one we thought that she's a teenager who's pregnant. Not one time an idea that "wow, being pregnant is cool because doll does it" crossed your minds. Come on now, US. Kids aren't that stupid. Girls like to roleplay mothers-daughters, and me and my cousin were even playing with stuffed toys as pregnant bellies when we were very young. Even as a kid, I didn't understand what was so controversial about the pregnant barbie doll. And honestly in hindsight it was all a big overreacting, it seems.

I feel like a good portion of these doll related controversies is just adults projecting their own weird insecurities onto dolls, as opposed to the dolls themselves.
Just look at the many controversies involving barbie, Bratz and other popular dolls. While some criticisms of these dolls do have some valid merit to them, like the concerns over the lack of body diversity/non-skinny body representation in some doll lines, a lot of arguments and comments from the anti-Barbie or anti-Bratz crowd have a rather misoginistic and slut-shame-y undercurrent to them. I.e. all the times some adults online called barbie a “slut” or said she looked ‘like a hooker” over the fact she... wore eyeshadow or wore a mildly suggestive outfit or something idk.
Plus the whole teenage pregnancy encouragement allegations of the pregnant Midge doll. Which is stupid anyway since I’m pretty sure most barbie characters aside from Skipper are supposed to be in their early 20’s. (Corse, I haven’t read up on my Barbie lore in a while so don’t quote me on that last bit lol)
Edit: I looked it up on the Barbie wiki and most of the characters are in their late teens, with Barbie herself being a legal adult at 19 years old. While Midge is around the same age as Barbie in most modern incarnations of the line, Midge was said to be older then Barbie (I think her early/mid twenties) during the time the Pregnant Midge doll was released.

I liked them because they were much more diverse and colourful, they had much more movable joints than most toys (and many parts could be easily changed between different dolls!), they were actually very interesting as even a "monster" could be kind and ambitious
Granted, I had body image issues but they arised because of my peers who called me ugly and fat (I was not), those dolls actually were an escape where I could feel beautiful roleplaying as vampire..

As a long time L.O.L. Surprise! Collector the color change thing has never bean a secret. Its been there since season one and every season after that. And MGA was never exactly sudle about it, as it was heavily featured in adds, marketing, youtube shorts, unboxings, checklist, and even the package the dolls come in. It boggles my mind parents are so neglective to not even look at the toy they just handed there kid and read the box it came in. I never really thought much of it since the dolls aren't meant for actual toddlers, with all those small pieces. Though, I know some parents do give em to there very small children (haven't a clue why) I think some of the outfits just look so skimpy because they have to be painted straight on the body's instead of molded, and most of what some parents would describe as "underwear" are just bathing suits. That being said, take a look at the Cancer Star sign Doll, "Claws". That doll dosn't even have a color change, its straight up painted on.

Honestly it irks me (I was a boy who got dolls, sue me if that annoys you) that Bratz (my parents were pretty open minded and let ke have any doll I wanted) was so over sexualized, wearing inappropriate outfits, while Barbie wasn’t being hit my that, even though My Scene and some other dolls they have had were wearing similar-ish things. Let alone Barbie has unrealistic body portions at the time (2015 onward has been the better bodies in Barbie history), while Bratz, being cartoony, wasn’t that unrealistic.
I think people shouldn’t judge on looks/dress, but by message (and if the way their clothing is expressed inappropriate).

The lol doll controversy is very much real and you are misunderstanding it. The color change feature is not the clothing itself rather the underwear and then it comes with clothing on top of it. The problem that people specifically “wasp mothers” have with the dolls themselves is that they are anatomically “correct” or at least were at one point because of the peeing feature of the doll it had a little nub that was supposed to represent genitals! The color change in ice feature was actually never really a big issue because they’re not suggestive like I’m assuming you read they are. It’s just like you dip it in cold water and like a bow tie and striped bathing suit appear.

Tbh the whole choking on a toy is more of a parental fault versus a toy brand’s fault. Also considering the time, why would parents be buying them toys based on games that toddlers and infants can’t even play yet (at the time)?

  • @GenieVillain26

I used to like the LOL dolls. The dolls are not meant to just stand naked in the tights. They are supposed to be an add on to the outfit they wear. Nevertheless, I can understand why some people find the tights being revealed from water questionable. I don't care about the toddler aged ones anymore as much as I do the OMG and BTW dolls from LOL which are dolls of teenagers and pre-teens.
MGA Entertainment isn't a perfect toy manufacturer. There are things I don't like that they have done in the past (they used to donate to Autism Speaks (which is more of a hate group than a charity when you look into it) and the CEO chastised a woman after she addressed that she thought they made an LOL doll of her likeliness without her permission (note this woman appeared on a UA-cam video from the official LOL channel before the doll was made and the doll looked far too much like her)). However, it sucks that the main shade it gets is fundies griping about how Bratz dolls and Lalaloopsy dolls look awful and whatever.

I think the reason why talking dolls are the subject to so much controversy is because, for instance, the reason why tinky winky can say “again again” in the Teletubbies show with nobody assuming tinky winky possesses firearms is because the show is, surprisingly, less repetitive than a talking doll. The talking doll only has a few voicelines to cycle through and the parents begin to notice patterns that aren’t really there and assume the dolls are saying something inappropriate. The poor audio fidelity of the doll’s speaker also probably doesn’t help.
