In order to use the reactor, you need a fusion core made of pulsar quartz that gets unlocked later, it only opens extra rooms of loot. Each major ship has a reactor.

Without spoiling, the stuff you find in random chests is generated upon opening them, and the item pool changes as you progress. So you may want to "save" some ships/areas for later, or at least not open any random chest unless you intend to empty it.

For a fusion reactor, you probably need ice or hydrogen or something similar. Fusion fuses (surprise) very small atoms together to release lots of energy. Uranium is used in fission reactors (the ones more common in the real world), which splits large atoms into smaller ones, again releasing a lot of energy.
