Andy Fairweather Low: The Guitar Sideman Legend
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 сер 2022
- In this podcast interview you will hear Andy Fairweather Low. A really great singer and guitar player from the UK. His band Amen Corner (known from the hit '(If Paradise is) Half as Nice') put him in the spotlight. Later on in his career he played with Eric Clapton, Roger Waters, George Harrison, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Nicks, David Crosby and many, many more. Safe to say that he is one of the best guitar sideman ever! What a great guest Andy is, talking all about his time in Eric Clapton's band, playing with Beattle George Harrison, getting called up by Roger Waters from Pink Floyd to come and play in his band. The story's are numerous! But what really inspired me is the man's holy fire for his music and instrument. At the age of 74 he is still hungry to make new music and to throw his music out into the world! An inspiration for all of us!
Side note:
One of my all-time favorite albums is the Iconic Unplugged album by Eric Clapton. When I got the chance to interview ánd play the support of Andy Fairweather Low at 'De Boerderij' in Zoetermeer; it definitely was a no brainer. Andy played guitar in Eric's band during the recording of that MTV Unplugged album and his playing always caught my ear.
Enjoy my hour long conversation with the one and only mister Andy Fairweather Low.

I my wife of 25 years. Mother of our three kids died at Christmas1982. I hit the bottle. I had and still have Andy's La Booga Rooga album and played Wide Eyed and Legless over and over. I realised I had to pull myself out of it. Sadly I am going through a similar situation with my of 36 years now. Andy has been through it himself. Your video stirred up memories.
This is one special guy. He spends his time describing how good everyone else is, without introducing his own ego - because he doesn't have one!
Such a modest, lovely bloke!
You are absolutely right! 👏
What a gent, no wonder Eric and Roger kept him in their bands for so long, he would have kept them so entertained with his stories for sure.
Andy had these AMAZING solo albums in the 70s and i play them to this day. They bop, they rock and they jive like nothing else on earth. Lets not forget this man can write a great song, sing a great song and back up anyone on guitar. The man is a consumate musician of the highest calibre.
I agree, they are brilliant and very laid back too I thknk.
he`s the only andy fairweather lowe we`ll ever have ,
treasured and cherished bless him !
The shortest 55 minutes in history. What a lovely, engaging man.
Nice! :)
I could listen to Andy all day .
Me to! Pro tip: put this video on repeat! 😂😉
I was born in the same year as Andy and a few miles away in Cardiff so I’ve followed his career for nearly 60 years, unbelievable.
I saw Clapton 2 nights ago in Denver, and Andy was with the band. I knew the guy was good, but I had NO idea what a tremendous player he is. Absolutely phenomenal.
Didn't know Andy is Welsh😊The life he has led !Unbelievable the amount of superstars he played with.
Unbelievable right?
WOW someone should of fetched andy a nice cold glass of water.
He speaks about so much of it with so much passion!
This Guy is a legend in my eyes, he's played with just about everyone! and that tells me he is something special. I saw him and his band play just before Clapton and Winwood at the Royal Albert Hall some years ago. He's so down to earth with no airs and graces! when he isn't playing on Tour with some rock legend he just goes around with his own band doing local Gigs in the UK. 😁
True!
Yes, I think also underrated by the music press for some reason.
Andy is a gift ! As are these 55 minutes.
Thank you !
Amen corner and fairweather band turned me into a huge fan of andy's.
I first discovered him as a teenager buying secondhand records during the mid 1990's.
The bands /musicians from the 60's 70's & 80's collecting lp vinyl records is one of the best hobbies ever.
Theres very little that i don't like. There was so many many great bands in those days.
I wish i could of been there!!!!🧲🎸🪕🪗🎺🎻🎷🎤🎹 BASS 🥁💥😍❤🔥
Clive taylor who played in amen corner is a phenomenal bass player!
I really admire Andy , he's such a down to earth bloke, fantastic guitarist, great musical talent and knowledge, he's been involved with so many great musicians, the last time I saw him, was about 1975 in the ballroom at the end of Ryde pier (Isle of Wight) Wide eyed and legless...🎼🎸
I have the pleasure of being a 1st place winner of Claptons Crossroads Festival 2019 and as much as Erics music is my influence, Andy’s masterwork with so many… He is who I want to meet and thank so badly :’)
I love Andy Fairweather Low i love Spider Jive ❤ I M also sorry for your loss Andy I was so glad to see you 3 times this year with Eric Clapton ❤
🙏
Could listen to your story's all day Andy. So looking forward to seeing you soon in Kinross.
Great stuff ! I saw him in London in 2008 at the Shepherd Bush Empire or something like that, by accident after recognizing his name in Time Out while looking for a show to attend that evening ! It was terrific !
👌🙌
What a great great interview with such an all around amazing musician who began as a teenage heart throb to singer songwriter to guitar/bass sideman. Such a down to earth person.
Thanks Mark! 🙏
What a nice bloke Andy is! I have a great memory of seeing him perform with Amen Corner at Maidstone Corn Exchange at the height of their fame back in the 60's! I was saddened to hear that his wife became very ill and died in May of this year. More happily, he has joined EC once again to tour this Autumn.
🙏
Fantastic interview, what an interesting chap Andy is, I remember seeing Amen Corner back in the 60's at Portsmouth Mecca uk and he mentioned a tour he did with Pink Floyd and Hendrix, I saw that too at Portsmouth Guildhall. I hadn't realised what a brilliant guitarist he was till I spotted him in Concert for George, really talented guy. All the best to him.
Thanks! 🤘🙏
Wide Eyed And legless is one of the best songs ever written. Great respect to the Cardiff Maestro.
who ? never heard this song but I like this dude
Great tune. I still have the 45...
....and it has some beautiful melodic jazzy chords in it too !
@@lyndamcardle4123 You're absolutely right. I love playing it on my guitar, but doing the singing justice, after hearing Andy, is an impossibility.
.and to C. L. Audio.....agreed but, unlike we mere mortals AFL doesn't play many of them, he tends to play lead fills interspersed with a few chord voicings.
Yes indeed, bona fide legend; cheers from Tombstone Arizona 🌵
Cheers from The Netherlands (or actually Germany, cause I will be attending The Guitar Summit). So stay tuned for a load of guitar related updates in the next couple of days :).
Another great interview and Andy is such a great player in his own right. His work on Unplugged with Eric is of the highest level.
Thank you!
What a wonderful interview. Would love to be in the room to hear all of Andy’s stories. Such an unassuming man. His love of playing is a joy to see. Love you AFL 🥰🥰
Thank you! It was really great talking to him!
@@EdStruijlaart had the opportunity to see Andy play with his band a couple of time and I’m booked to see him in September and October in the UK. Hope I get the chance to meet him xx
Gives a real insight to a working....jobbing musician. There's a lot to learn and appreciate here
🙏
Brilliant interview thanks, with a unique and wonderful musician. If you haven’t already, go and see him you won’t be disappointed.
Wonderful interview. Apart from being an outstanding musician, Andy seems a genuine, funny, and likable guy. Would have loved to hear him with Paul Carrack and Nick Lowe.
🙌
What a magnificent guy and a true legend! Nice interview Ed!
Thanks! 🙏
Fantastic interview. Seen him a number of times, what a performer
Andy is one of the best guitarist ever!!!
What a really enjoyable interview with a very under-rated musician.
Fantastic interview with a brilliant musician and sideman who always knows what to and what to not play. Thank you for asking him if there was proper monitoring on Unplugged. We can't see floor monitor but there must have been side fills or something. Regardless, all those musicians have incredible pitch.
My pleasure! Great to hear you enjoyed it! 🙌🙏
Andy is one of the greats
Great interview ... his self-deprecating vibe and being a great musician ... no wonder he works with the best!
🙏🙌
What an excellent and engaging interview with Andy. I’ll definitely watch this several more times. I love his history and sharing his stories, and his take on gear by keeping things simple. I couldn’t agree more. First time listener and now a subscriber. Thank you, Ed. 🎧
AFL is the real deal and still relevant well into his 70s. Not knowing his financial worth, I often wonder why huge stars don't take better care of the backing musicians that make them sound phenomenal. How hard would it have been for Eric to buy him that acoustic guitar all those years ago when Andy's credit card was denied? I've always wanted to ask the Claptons, Henleys and McCartneys of the world how much money is enough? What more do you realistically need to be comfortable beyond reason. Suppose it's easy for me to say. Spectacular interview, thanks for sharing.
You are welcome! 🙌
Legend! 👍🏻🙏🏻
Thanks! And let’s not forget Andy!! 😉
Have loved Andy since i was 14 i'm now 70 . He has always been my fave guy . Saw him a few yrs ago & met his roadie who went & got me Andy"'s autograph .
Great story. Thanks for sharing Carol! 🙏
@@EdStruijlaart no problem .
Brilliant.Andy is Fantastic.Great guy as well (even if he does support Cardiff City)!
Great interview. He is the MAN..! Who would have thought he'd be such a staple of proper music. Eric (the pretender) was lucky to have him.
Excellent interviewer, what an interesting and fascinating interview.
Thank you Keith! 🙏
What a brilliant interview.....just a really interesting guy.
Thanks Stephen! 🙏
I am gonne play tennis. leuk om al die verhalen te horen lekker down to Earth man
Top guy top singer!
Helemaal geweldig!! A musician’s musician!
Dat is ‘ie zeker! Mooie bescheiden man en wát een gitarist ook. Op die unplugged plaat ook, hoe hij als een handschoen om Clapton’s partijen zit met zijn spel. Prachtig :)
That's what everyone says about AFL...!
From the Cradle was Eric at his best. Andy knows what hes talking about. Those years Eric was on another level.
Brilliant interview fellow Bluebird 💙
Love this man! Thanks for this interview. He can also belt out Jr Walker tunes. Watch him with Eric and Gary Brooker at the Stiletto charity concert in the late 80’s. Awesome!!❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥
I will check it out, thx for the tip!
Just let him play…. Perfect!
🙏
good stuff .time to listen
I love Andy fairweather low
thank you, sir.
Good gawd Now hearing most of the interview I am so glad I went the passion route and not the money route. I wonder how he would feel knowing he is in a short story but plays a retiring mercenary lol
Love AFL!
Geweldig dit! Leuk gesprek! PS: hoop dat jij circus speel tijdens jou tour!
Great guy and musician.
Lastly, would love to hear him and Waddy Wachtel converse.
Cardiff City fan ❤🏴
👏
Best tone that somehow got stuck in my head and I never forgot is from his single humbucker strat. Any one has any info on that guitar? Great interview man. Liked and subscribed.
Thanks! 🙏
My favorite satriani album!
Gin House Blues , what a track .
👍👍
👍
Really enjoyed this!
Great interview - love your style - you're familiar with his work, but resist the urge to interrupt (hard to do, sometimes, especially for a blabbermouth like me) 👍🏻
Thanks Rick! That is really hard to do indeed! But I’ve learnt through the years not to go ‘oh yeah, I’ve had JUST the same thing!’ 😅. When I feel the urge I bite my tongue and hope to let my guest shine with his own story. My own story I will tell through my own songs. Cheers!
@EdStruijlaart I've been an AFL fan ever since I saw Unplugged on MTV when I was 12.
That was 30 years ago!!!
First long-form interview I've ever heard from him. You really did a great job. Loved it!
Thanks Rick! We are the same age, what an album Unplugged is. This fall I’m paying homage to this album in theaters. Great to play those songs that shaped my musical soul :). Cheers!
WTF, Walked into a guitar shop with Clapton, and he didn't buy him the guitar🤦♂️
I know what it was like in the 60s 70s. Played with Andy one time in Southend on sea. I don't think Amen Corner was his best.
👍👍😉😉😎😎
AFL doesn’t get enough recognition
I hope this helps a bit! 😊
Always wears his Cardiff City football club jacket 😂
I wish this cat was would come to Louisville
De passie is nog aanwezig. Meer dan HULDE.
Hmmm, i reckon Tim Renwick and Albert Lee might have claims…
What I don't understand and what I really resent about some of these wickedly wealthy musicians is how they sometimes don't pay or only pay scale to brilliant and necessary sidemen/musicians/friends who help colour or make their music the best it can be.
A gentleman and seriously good human like Andy should not be broke.
There's a terrible lack of respect shown in this situation.
Rockstars pay your bills with a bonus.
From Metallica ripping off all of Mustaines's music and guitar parts on their first album to Mick insulting Jeff Beck ( recording and touring payments) on to Led Zeppelin being forced to pay royalties to bluesmen only after being taken to court. You know what? You suck and embarrass your fans like me.
And there's many more.
In fact I might write a book about it and shame these r's holes.
ACDC did it to Bon ( not crediting his lyrics on Back in Black )
I'll stop now as I'm getting worked up lol
What do you all think?
Any more examples?
Yes, very disappointing that Eric laughed about Andy's credit card bouncing when, really, he could/should have purchased the guitar for him.
@@MrCherryJuice yeah it's one of those weird things about some musos
They pride themselves on being real carnts with lots of sarcasm, personal insults and feigned 'hardness'. There's always a pecking order or whipping boy/girl
That's why the roadies hate them.
And Eric was the worst carnt of them all. Ask him lol
@@grimmertwin2148 My first album was 'Five Live Yardbirds'. In the sleeve notes it said, "And there in the corner sits Eric 'Slowhand' Clapton, winding the strings on his guitar until they snap." As an impressionable young lad I automatically sensed that here was someone with issues. That certainly proved to be the case.
And as you note, he's not shy of admitting that he was a lowlife in his earlier years.
Too bad it's not Andy Fairweather-Low whose name is one the marquee of the major venues. If anyone deserved success on his own terms, it's him. Mind, I get the impression that he's quite happy where he is.
Too much spider jiving
Too much La La music going round
@@rhodsullivan7773
........absolutely true!!
Was enjoying the interview until Andy reveals he's become a germ-neurotic 48:25.
Why? Totally normal that you don’t want to pick up something when you are on tour, right? 🥸
But thanks for sticking around that long 😅🤘
100% with you
Top guitar player and gentleman is Andy
He sure is!
