It's so interesting, this show's different take on what little we know about the Qianlong Emperor's harem. Historically Xiaoxianchun was the charitable and conservative one, and Nara was the bad one. This one paints Langua as charitable and frugal only when it suits her, and without much information on Ulanara, paints her as sweet and charitable but weak because of her virtue. That's nice, but this is the Qing harem and the whole world knows that you can't be nice there forever, so it wasn't believable that after decades, she never changed her personality after being vulnerable so many times. Qianlong placated her with bullshit and yet she never learned until the last few episodes. This is annoying and not a good character arc for the step-empress portions. It doesn't make her a strong protagonist. Sometimes you can see while watching that the writers struggled to keep up with this narrative or perhaps wrote themselves into a corner... For example, Ruyi being unable to defend herself later thanks to the establishment of her as a peaceful, upright character. It annoyed me because she never learned how to fight back with very obvious solutions. She had the power to punish those in the harem but didn't maintain order, relying only on her faction and the belief of her moral superiority. And so her children died or fell out of favor along with her. I kept thinking she would abandon her efforts to love Hongli for the sake of her kids but she was obsessed with him her whole life? Or, in the case of Consort Ling, writing her pitiful and sympathetic at first but forcing her into the villain even though she did her best to stay on Ruyi's good side. I didn't like this and wished Ruyi would have accepted her. She was ready to be subservient. Ruyi's reasoning for disliking Ling (she chose to become a wealthy concubine instead of a soldier's wife? Who wouldn't do that??) was not believable to me. The story doesn't need Ling to be the villain; it could have ended with her as a close ally of Ruyi's faction like with Empress Dowager. There were other great villains (Fuca Langua, Gao Xiyue, Jin Yuyan, A'ruo, Emperor). Her jump to being evil wasn't really justified and it was Ruyi's fault. Maybe Consort Qing (annoying big mouth) could have been the surprise villain? Still I love this show despite its issues, but the last third of the series I skip. I can't stand how nasty and cruel Qianlong became and Ruyi unable to accept it and preserve herself. She should have rejected the Empress seat as she already said earlier she just wants to have a peaceful life. Since time immemorial things change when you marry. But then that eliminates the historical basis... I do love how she rejects Hongli at the end. About time, woman. Overall, of the people that lived at the end only the Emperor was given a complete, well written character arc.

The Empress didn't mention anything about how she caused Yonglian's illness to flare up. She made him stand in the cold doorway.
