IMHO a former professional trumpet player, the most important message in this video I found in this video was practice every day. Like running, weight lifting, #random sport it's training your muscles. And it depends on the person: some people do well on a marathon, others are very good sprinters. You can train to become better at any but your physique will limit if you can play like maestro Arturo or like Miles Davis. Both not bad trumpet players but they dont sound the same.
Absolutely, it’s all about the daily grind and intelligent practice. I also think a lot of players choose to stop learning because it becomes apparent how much there is to learn and we both know that change is hard, right? I’m not a fan of these old click-baity videos, and don’t remember what I said, but they do bring people to the channel. Hopefully some will stay for the more recent stuff…
When I started to learn the trumpet as an 8 year old I must have played with my tongue between my teeth, but I don’t think my teacher told me to do this. I wasn’t a very diligent student but enjoyed playing as a social activity. When I was introduced to double and triple tonguing I found I struggled and it was then I found out (when I was about 16 - can’t remember how, I think it as the only way I could make it work. That was 50 years ago) the tongue stayed behind the teeth so was able to do multiple tonguing. The trouble was I sounded terrible and was so fed up I gave up the trumpet. About 12 years later I heard Kind of Blue and decided to start playing again only this time I would play ‘properly’ and since I sounded rubbish anyway it wouldn’t matter. I was surprised that it took no time at all to sound reasonable and have practiced consistently ever since playing in various bands and orchestras. None of the teachers I have had were able to explain how I could increase my range and none of the standard texts helped me much. Then UA-cam came along bringing a whole lot more confusion. I remain open minded and experiment with any new information to see if it helps. I bought the Superchops DVD a long time ago but I didn’t manage to apply it. I will be dusting it off. I consider myself more knowledgeable/experienced now than when I bought it so maybe it will make more sense this time around. Thanks for posting this video.
Hi Rich. Ralph Salamone is doing a lot of videos too. He has been using the Callet embouchure for about 30 years. He has maybee a bit more power to his tone, but to mee, the artikulation is more like a "bllaaat" (no afence! ) Your tone seams more playable and you are using a more common mouthpiece. I like the way you think about mouthpiece. 1SB - Salamones mouthoiece - seams to be a strange mouthpiece in fx brassband And then: thanks for videoes...and a guiding in a way to make trumpetplaying easier. Take care Erik Denmark
Hi Erik, Yes Ralph definitely has more power than me, there's no doubt! Our experiences are pretty different. I spent quite a lot of time learning to conform with the expectations of others whilst learning to play in a very extreme way. Thank you for your comment. I have new videos coming out soon.
@@BrassPractice . It is a extreme way, but it works but it also takes effort and time. Ralph clames that any of the great players with tce woud be alle to play both extreme jazz and symfonic. Perhaps. Maybe some do, I do not know. I am looking forward to you videos...always inspiring! Take care Erik
I agree - TCE doesn't prevent you from being able to play in any style of music. The important thing, however, is how and what to practice and what to think about whilst you do it. The reason that Jerome Callet's teaching has manifest a bunch of different approaches is because we're all trying to use the trumpet with different aims. It's also worth noting that the playing problems inherent in players from different parts of the world tend to differ so the various teachers end up describing the same things in different ways in order to overcome this. My focus as a teacher is very different from that of Sylas Xavier, for example. Ralph's approach is different too.
Great Video, but I have a question. So at the moment, because I took a 4 month break, my embouchure is really bad and I can‘t even get a f2 out of my trumpet. Do you have a tips for improving the embouchure?
Oooo... a tunable bell trumpet! I have one, though I never move the bell except to remove it when cleaning. Do you adjust yours? I only bought it because it was the nicest trumpet on the used shelf in my price range.
The bell on this trumpet is actually static and can unscrew to be swapped with another. The crook end is the tuning slide. Look up "Stomvi Master Trumpet" if you want to learn more.
Thanks alot. Great video! I’m struggling with my high register and thinking to learn more about Jerome Callet Superchops method. What is your opinion about it ? Thanks again.
There is not a single top brass player in the world who utilises the TCE method, which should tell you all you need to know. It isn't versatile enough, and while it may give you a boost in range and attacks through that range, it severely hampers you in other areas. Attacks are very explosive and hard to vary in style, and multiple tonguing is far more difficult. I spent a long time trying to develop the TCE system, and all it did was lighten my wallet (through various "TCE qualified instructors") and worsen my playing. Be open-minded to trying new things, of course, but I've known far more players this has NOT worked for rather than worked for.
I'm sorry to hear that you've had a bad experience. Your statement at the beginning is not based in truth, but I do understand why you believe it. I hope you have better luck with another approach.
I would be happy to give your more information about these methods if you'd like to get in touch via email. You can reach me from the tonguecontrolled.info site.

@@dktrumpet65 All this conjecture and anecdote, and not one shred of evidence! Arturo has never explicitly said "I use TCE," so the comparison is meaningless, the same goes for Faddis. This is all advocates of the TCE method have, vague statements about how serious players play without any concrete evidence. Should we find our own way and be open minded? Sure, but not so open minded our brain falls out. For the three people that might use TCE, there are hundreds of thousands that don't and play exceptionally well; by the power of Occam's razor, we can deduce that TCE is not the right fit for most, if not all people...

Thanks for the candid video.
A worthwhile watch.
I'll try to incorporate this to my practice. Wish me luck!
Best of luck!

Does this exercise help endurance? Excellent video btw
Probably, but that’s not what it’s meant for. There are other exercises for that.
